Dashboard Confessional Discusses the Fans

starting in 1999 this group has gone
through various iterations from guy with
an acoustic guitar to full-fledged ban
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Chris Carrabba from Dashboard
Confessional
about what keeps his band fresh
now the music is obviously deeply
personal as much of songwriting is is it
ever difficult to relive these moments
over and over yes it is you know it go
over stones it though night after night
you know and some nights you you relive
them with revisiting where you were when
you wrote the song other times you slip
back further to experiencing it when it
happened for whatever the event was and
other times you look at it purely kind
of from an adult perspective like well
this is where I am now and this is where
in maybe some one case or more than one
case maybe this is where she is now and
I just have a whole different
appreciation for the way you told the
story
describe the relationship between you
and your fans
I think it’s as a as personal a
relationship you can have with people
you don’t know I guess I feel connected
to them I feel like they feel connected
with me I don’t put up any kind of great
wall but between myself in the audience
which isn’t to say we don’t aim to
entertain that is goal number one when
we play show but we’re probably more
accessible than the band’s I listened to
growing up but also I guess I write
songs that you know I’m connected to
they seem to apply them to their life
and feel as connected to them so we
share that we share that piece
now you recently did an acoustic tour
which do you prefer I always prefer the
torment until near the end of it and
then I want to be the other thing what
you search for is the unexpected that’s
another thing that’s led to our
longevity and not in terms of people
wanting to see us but us wanting to play
the fact that we never had to choose
whether to be me with an acoustic guitar
a duo with acoustic guitars a trio with
electric guitars so the four of us as
the band you know we keep getting to do
whatever we fancy at the time and that I
think has led us to always having a
fresh take on what we’re doing right now
and always being excited about what
we’re doing right now because it’s not
what we did last time and there’s
mystery that’s what you always want the
music
touring with such bands as you know u2
and Bon Jovi what have you been able to
learn by watching these veterans at work
we get to see the show from a different
angle every night if you choose we can
stand right in the right and I could
stick stand in front of Jon Bon Jovi
every night need just high-five me he
doesn’t eat there pretty cool cats
watching these guys still having a
connection to their music the way their
fans have a connection to that music is
inspiring to me but watching how they
don’t take it for granted is important
to see that even 25 30 years later that
they’re still acting as if this might be
the last show they’ll ever play and
they’re given it every single thing that
they’ve got is great to see because
that’s easy to do for five years it’s
been kind of easy to do for ten years I
got a lot of time before I catch up to
them probably so it’s unlikely that we
ever will you know but because it’s rock
and roll for crying out loud you know
it’s not a lot of longevity you don’t
get a gold watch you know when you
retire but the fact that they aren’t
taking it as a given even now is um
that’s food for thought
thanks very much thank you
