Comedian Neal Brennan: White vs. Black Humor

you know him is the co-creator of
Chappelle’s Show
that’s not Dave Chappelle hi I’m Rebecca
Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re at the Just for Laughs
festival to speak with comedian Neal
Brennan why people we’re not good at
relaxing you know why
I realize we’re always thinking about
the rules and like who broke the rules
main thing about being white you got a
minute we got tattletale and our DNA how
do you explain your kind of crossover
popularity between races if I’m if I’m
known for anything it’s for having a
black friend if you say this guy crazy
fella show you I get a lot of credit for
for like I get a lot of like Bible oh I
like him
racially I tend to side with black
people you know that so they like me for
that no the most obvious white rule of
all time is no loitering you know black
people call loitering chillin white
people try to they’re like are let’s see
but this chill in here now we’ve got
outlaw that I don’t like that one bit
nope far too relaxing there’s no profit
being made I don’t like it what is the
difference between white comedy and
black comedy white comedy tends to be
more entitled and smug white people love
the rules so much that we will go on
police ride alongs for fun do any I do
and white that is you ever even try to
explain that to a black person like yeah
I call the precinct to say hey it’s Neil
I’m white I want to go for a ride-along
they send over a squad car I get the
back seat which is fun for me because
what other opportunity would I have to
do that ah
are you looking to tap hot-button
political issues I’m politically
uh active in engaged I wrote for the
correspondence center with Seth Meyers
did you have a favorite joke from the
correspondence center my favorite joke
was one that I didn’t write but Seth had
cut it and and I told him like put it
back in which was Donald Trump said
recently has a great relationship with
the blacks though unless the blacks are
a family of white people
I bet he’s mistaken the best part was
seeing Obama like laugh stop and then go
like goddammit that’s funny and laugh
again do you think there is a line that
you or anyone can cross or can anything
be made funny I say the n-word in mic so
that I can’t really be very uh when
people get mad at Tosh or Coral I always
defend guys cuz it’s like first of all
you know comedians what’s great about
them is that we will say something that
people don’t agree with every black did
I know is in better shape than me all of
them the old ones the babies they’re all
better shape than me I’m white I’m vegan
I workout twice a week and I basically
the body of a black dude who just got
out of a coma
pretty much what did your time on the
Chappelle show teach you that was French
a day for so long and there’s times when
I’m on stage and I’m just like this is
I’m so doing day right now and there but
there are moments maybe where he’s doing
me I don’t even know where the line is
yeah like I don’t know where he ends and
I begin well thank you very much thank
you
