now here’s my response to that who are
these women and how do I get them to

I’ve watched their doesn’t really seem
to be a theme which many comedians have
what’s the writing process like my
strongest routines are actual stories I
tell about my father my wife my wife’s
refusal to fake an orgasm has forced me
to fake not having an orgasm do you know
how hard that is well sorry honey it’s
just a womb now your humor has been
described as absurd and funny do you
think your parents have anything to do
with that with your father being a
German and your mother being a
french-canadian first and foremost we
had a lot of rules grown up and one of
the strictest rules we had was we had to
wake up with a smile that was one of my
dad’s rules every morning we would come
downstairs my brothers and I and my
father would be waiting for us in the
living room with his morning coat on cup
of coffee in his hand classical music
playing in the background

an absurd relationship a German in
French it’s just it was kind of crazy on
the one hand we had the ultra
seriousness of my father mixed with the
sort of laisser faire attitude of my
mother often you know because with my
father you know failure was not an
option you know often you know he would
say that to me you know Derek you can’t
fail you have to do well and my mother
on the other hand was the complete
opposite she’d be like Derek if at first
you don’t succeed don’t tell your father
I remember once I was watching Sesame
Street with my dad and at some point I
turned to him and I said dad how come
big bird can’t fly and my dad just
looked at me and he said vote was that
is because as that is not a bad day that
is a tired old man inside a bird costume
how’d you go from being a businessman to
stand up comedian I was at a comedy club
once as a patron and I was with some of
my colleagues and at some point just
before the show started the MC came
around and said hey anyone who wants to
try this they can call in on a Saturday
and do the open mic and all my
colleagues sort of looked over at me and
said sort of you know gave me the nudge
because I was basically the the clown at
work so to speak one of my favorite
routines as I would sometimes jump up on
a cubicle and do imitations of Kermit
the Frog and hi-ho Kermit the Frog here
now many stand-up comedians have props
or musical instruments is there anything
you use on stage I do actually I I play
the recorder on stage actually I have
the recorder right here it’s funny you
should ask
I I play it but it’s serious it’s not
comedy because i think is important to
have moments of seriousness in a comedy
routine and maybe i’ll just play one of
my favorite i wrote this actually myself
and that is why I didn’t become a
