this sick de Soleil show takes place on
a strange Island ruled by goddesses hi
I’m Rebecca Brennan and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be
learning more about Alma Luna oh gosh I
what makes this show unique from
different search shows well one very
unique thing is the cast of women it’s
75 percent women acrobats and typically
in circus it’s more like 25 percent
women so we spent about two years
scouting the world’s top women acrobats
athletes artists and musicians so it’s
an incredible display of female talent
on the stage
in search shows the plot is always
secondary and I think this is probably
the second time in cirque history that
we’ve actually put the story forward
it’s important and it isn’t because
people come to Sur to see some type of
wall you know an acrobatic Wow said oh
wow I can’t do this you know or wow he’s
gonna kill himself or whatever right
that’s a wall but a WoW is also
emotional and the wall is also sometimes
it’s a light cue you know sometimes it’s
a costume
would you mind giving us an idea of what
the story is in Alma Luna sure the story
is about a mother a queen who rules an
island of women and she has a young
daughter who is coming of age so the
whole show is about the ritual of this
daughter becoming a woman and the Queen
Prospero who’s a homage to the character
from The Tempest invites all the women
goddesses to help celebrate this moment
and in order for her to really become a
woman she has to meet a man so the Queen
brings a storm which brings the arrival
of the boys and there’s a young suitor
who the daughter falls in love with and
their love goes through many tests and
at the end of the show their love is
earned and they gain wisdom and we
celebrate their love and an idea of a
hope for a new generation for the world
what we do at Cirque is the process is
to cast the show to find an acrobatic
skeleton first of all what is the slow
number a high number an aerial number a
ground number a tumbling number energy
we discussed this for a little while
until we get a macrobiotic Skelton we
have a water bowl the first time the
water bowl is in a tent
we have straps aerial straps we have an
uneven bar number which just was created
especially for the show so it’s a women
act all women doing uneven bars there’s
a big emphasis on emotion and character
and a certain kind of empathy for the
audience so it’s not just about
acrobatic Wow’s but it’s all about
touching your spirit and moving your
heart as well coming from a woman’s
angle and a woman director it has a lot
of soul I would say this one has a lot
of soul thanks very much
thank you
