Cars: 2007 Detroit NAIAS Recap – Business Stories Part 1

welcome to the 2007 north american
international auto show i’m your host
ashcan carbs lucien for watchmojo calm
well here we are in Detroit this year
marks the 100th anniversary of the auto
show and it’s a big one there’s
definitely a lot of trends and overall
newsworthy items that are taking a lot
of attention in the business presses
what are some of those trends we’ll
first off obviously we now find
ourselves in a global marketplace and
definitely the global competitors are
turning it up a notch the context is
very simple over the past three years
between 2003 and 2006 the only country
to really see a sharp increase in terms
of purchases and productions is China
the US is down a few points Germany is
essentially flat the Japan has risen a
few points but China is up over a
hundred ten percent in terms of both
production of cars and purchases
incidentally this year also marks the
announcement that Chang Feng a Chinese
manufacturer will be essentially
launching cars in the US hopefully
selling some within two years now most
analysts are rather skeptical saying
that Chang Feng will not necessarily see
any material volume for another ten
years but the fact remains that while
American car makers are taking the
offensive around the world global car
makers are bringing the offensive down
to the States now why China is a new
upstart in the car production space
clearly the leader in Asia is obviously
Japan now this year in 2006 in terms of
car production Japan and the US are neck
to neck but JD Power and Associates is
projecting that by 2009 Japan will be
the largest producer of cars outpacing
the United States now moving from the
macro to the micro level clearly the
japan vs us battleground is also being
manifested by General Motors and Toyota
while General Motors remains currently
the largest car producing company this
year many people even here somewhat off
the record were hinting that perhaps
just perhaps by next time this year
Toyota just might be the largest car
producing company in the world so maybe
that is why General Motors knows that
this year in 2007 they need to have a
very strong showing to make sure that
they remain
at the top of the mountain
