it may be stripping but here’s a show
even your girlfriend will enjoy hi I’m
Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com our host Maia learns more
about the art of burlesque from dancers
Michele l’amour and Renee LaRue so what
is burlesque to you a very playful
friendly innocent form of adult
entertainment that isn’t necessarily all
about like beautiful women or
necessarily beautiful costumes but it’s
all about comedy and like bringing
together like a farce because the term
is like a farce mocking something
burlesque is the exaggeration of
femininity so the curves and the cheese
and the sexuality that’s what for Les
Cayes to me so do you find your
personality shines through when you’re
on stage yeah I don’t really consider my
onstage persona a character it is truly
me and that’s one of the things that I
like to bring to the table is keeping it
really genuine and keeping the sexuality
real I don’t feel like that’s a
character for me but it’s a time and a
place you know I’m not gonna bring that
everywhere I go how long have you been
for less dancing for eight years eight
years but very seriously since 2006 I’ve
been doing burlesque for about seven
years I have my own burlesque school in
Chicago called studio l’amour are there
any rules when you’re teaching newcomers
or do you just tell them to be
themselves there’s not rules but it’s
always fun to break them when there are
rules it’s my foundation for teaching is
knowing how to move your body in
burlesque you’re usually not wearing a
ton of clothing so it’s probably best if
you know how to present your body and
then we build on top of that and start
putting your personality into it
in your style and you know I don’t want
to create cookie cutter people yeah and
have you seen the burlesque scene evolve
since you first began dancing I’ve
noticed that burlesque is happening all
over the place everyone’s getting into
it whether they want to just take a
class and be sexy for their husband or
dress up like an old classic 40s movie
info glamorous for a day and one thing
I’ve noticed different geographical
areas in the country that I’ve traveled
around have their own flavor like in the
south is classic West Coast for example
is all about beautiful costumes New York
very performance arts Midwest very dance
and like true talent driven so it’s it’s
interesting
so it’s evolving I think that each one
of those pockets are taking from each
other what do you think surprises the
audience when they go to a burlesque
show for their first time it is
extremely entertaining I think a lot of
people hear the word burlesque and
they’re like shocked and oh my god what
am I gonna see but then they find that
there’s a lot of intelligence and humor
and sensuality all put in it’s layer
upon layer
it really encompasses every form of
great entertainment
