hi I’m Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com our host maya spoke with
to burlesque dancers to learn more about
this art form so what exactly is
burlesque burlesque to me is a form of
theater that may or may not include
sketch comedy could in physical comedy
dramatic storylines but I think a
mainstay of the world less that we’re
seeing today is the element of
striptease mm-hmm and it’s delicious and
it’s it has an interesting sense of
irony and it’s it never takes itself too
seriously it’s exciting to explore the
aspects of glamour and taking things
that are perhaps a high social value and
treating them in a low way in vice versa
and do you have a history of other
performing backgrounds I have a long
history in dance I’ve studied a number
of different styles a number of Latin
Styles hip-hop jazz tap African so how
long have you been performing burlesque
I’ve been doing this for about a decade
now actually it has been over a decade
so I’ve been working very hard for a
long time and have you seen that
burlesque scene evolved since you first
began when I moved to New York City
there were less than 20 of us doing it
at that time and so I feel like the
people that came just before me really
laid the foundation and I helped set it
it’s been an amazing transformation just
to watch how it’s gotten into women and
how they want to express themselves just
the idea of like tapping into their
individuality and their sensuality and
and finding what that feminine mystique
is and finding a way to express it I
think it’s really healthy I think it’s
not only healthy for women to feel that
way but I also think it’s healthy for
men to understand that women can harness
their power in a creative and beneficial
way that isn’t sleazy you know it’s it’s
really about like feeling that rush it’s
really about feeling that excitement and
I think that that’s really good for
society are there any rules to burlesque
for me i don’t really limit myself
sometimes i’ll come to the stage with a
specific arc in mind but i might find
that through the interaction with the
audience i always leave room for that
that it takes me into quite a different
direction and it’s it’s exciting for me
to perform because quite often i’m
discovering what it is i’ll be
performing as i perform it
that there are some limits and
personally I do I’ve seen a burlesque
branch off into several subcultures over
the last 10 years so for me I mean there
are people who get really performance
already with it there are people that go
in a more showgirl cabaret type place
there are people who go into a more
theatrical place its branch out in so
many different things I think that
sometimes people go over the top with it
they start with an idea like burlesque
and it really becomes something else but
they’ll still call it burlesque and
that’s where I see a lemon have you
noticed any major differences between
American and Canadian audiences i
just–can Canadians in general warmer
more polite I don’t know the last time I
was here I got a standing ovation yeah
that in itself was enough to like make
me feel like okay I love you guys I’m
coming back not to mention up to you who
ease that I love that I heard from the
problem when you were on sweet and I and
that’s exactly what I was saying when I
saw her on stage amazing my I can’t wait
to see you guys thank you very much as
nice to me thank you so much
