Billy Talent on ‘Dead Silence,’ Aaron’s Heart Surgery

they’ve stayed true to the punk rock
vibe since their debut and haven’t lost
any of their trademark energy hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Billy Talent
about going back to their roots on the
album dead silence well let’s talk about
this silence what were you guys going
for on that one we’ve established the
sound on the first two records I think
that our fans really missed from the
last record but at the same time we love
to us we get on the road the last record
and wanted to keep a bit of that so I
guess the goal is to create something
new while keeping elements from those
past records that sound good
ian was involved in every single sound
of this record and every part of it and
really helped us all just know pushing
us like you can do it like this is what
I want from you and just push push push
so and it turned out great
yeah it’s funny because it’s not
something you could just jump into and I
realized 19 years in this band probably
enough time where I’ve learned things to
pick things up from other producers
we’ve worked with the 24 is a first demo
cassette that we ever did for track demo
cassette 1994 I produced in my parents
basement and it sounded like absolute
dog craps
what would you say was the biggest
influence on this album there was a lot
of things to happening in the last year
that really kind of came out de
matically on this record and it was it
began with last summer and the whole
Occupy movement and all the unrest
around the world and then we wrote like
in Death March
when we started recording to record and
after recorded Aaron’s Thomas he
informed us that he was going to have to
go have the major heart surgery in
January or February and that whole time
like after what had happened last year
and coming into 2012 just created this
atmosphere of uncertainty and almost
anxiety around us we were all really
worried for Aaron with everything else
going on violence was escalating and
people are acting crazy in the world and
stuff and and so I think a lot of that
came in the came out in the lyrical
content on the record people eating each
other’s faces off yeah like what’s going
on with that that’s insane
can you tell us a bit about the video to
surprise price there’s a lot of effects
in this video it’s the first video that
we’ve never performed it yeah and it’s
the first video that’s comedy as well
there’s a lot of computer animations and
we’re flying planes and it’s a comedy
like top secret or airplane yeah monty
python ish well on that note i think
we’ll say thank you great thank you very
much thank you very much that was fun
