Becoming an Actor – Professional Work & Representation

for those actors out there who complain
that there’s not enough work to just
agree with that do you agree with that
is there enough work out there for
actors mark is what you make of it okay
there’s a lot of people sitting on
stupid doing absolutely nothing there
are opportunities and people are not
willing to take that opportunity there
is background work there are working on
student films there are independent
films you’re volunteering your time and
yes that’s your time but you’ve got to
take that moment out there because
nobody’s going to see you if you’re
sitting at home waiting for the flipping
phone to ring do you think it’s a good
idea for for young actors to get an
agent and when does someone know that
they’re ready to have an agent because
I’ve seen actors who have taken one
course and think that they’re ready to
get an agent and you know sometimes it
doesn’t work out for them because of
certain certain circumstances so yeah
there’s so many you know what again
nothing beats a failure but a try what
um some actors they go when they seek
out an agent there’s a lot of people who
go and seek out an agent before they
even get acting classes okay oh yeah you
know no you know here’s a have somebody
who I’ve known for quite some time we
grew up together and no cheating exactly
what I’ve been doing and so on and so
forth it’s always funny interesting
because people that know and know what I
do they don’t come to me first they go
everywhere else and end up having to
come to me so I just find that
interesting and she has a friend who was
represented by an agent and again like
you know she figures all I’m going to be
represented by this agent because my
friend knows them you know itself and so
forth the truth of the matter is that an
agent a reputable agents not going to
represent you unless he’s seen your work
you know and there are some agents that
will take certain people because they
have an ethnic look there’s not that
much work for ethnic actors
and I’m an ethnic and every part of the
way I’m a woman I’m black and I’m and
I’m big and beautiful they you know
people again people don’t understand the
reality of the business okay and you
know they’re quick to go and get an
agent because they figured that’s what
they have to do mm-hmm you know well I
have to go an agent i even have people
saying well you know I finish this class
and I’m going to go to New York and and
and and seek my fortune I’m going to LA
you know and I’m like for what you know
yeah I’m going to New York and I go oh
yeah to vacation yeah no to go and look
for work and to get an agent in New York
and then I’ll have people like well
could you give me your contacts New York
al now because you need training I will
tell you some great schools in New York
to go to but an agent wants to see your
work they want to see either a demo reel
or see you in a play and um you know an
agent would pretty much come up to you
you know but then you also have to be
careful because there’s a lot of snakes
out there and a lot of people are fishes
yes ma’am yeah for whatever you know so
the thing the truth of the matter is
that you have to have a certain
relationship with your agent because
it’s a business that’s what acting is at
the end of the day yes it’s an art but
it’s a business when you’re talking
about agents and so on and so forth and
move and work it’s a business so the
answer is should they go out and get an
agent I don’t know that it depending on
the agent it have may work it may not
work some ages may say something say hey
you know what got a great look you’re
going to get some training I will
represent you keep you under my wing you
know and help build your career some
agents do do that you know and then you
have agents who have like you look at
the roster if they have more than 50
people in the only one person yeah
chances are you’re not even can get in
door
