one acronym says it all hi I’m Rebecca
Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re speaking with Howie D of the
Backstreet Boys to learn more about the
collaboration between his band and the
new kids on the block
I mean you’re in town for nkotbsb I just
want to talk about that a little bit I
mean the tour just started so how has it
been going what’s the fan reaction like
honestly I didn’t know what to expect I
mean even we just came up with the idea
the concept of hey look these two boy
bands together they’ve known each other
for many years where it started from and
where it is now you know I thought we
were gonna probably play you know a
couple of small theatres – now we’ve
pretty much got 52 dates sold out pretty
much arenas I mean the fact that we were
able to play now thirteen to eighteen
thousand Cedars again is amazing it just
goes to show you how loyal both of our
fan bases are
it’s great because we’re actually
getting a chance to merge our two fan
bases now a lot of that the new kids
fans that maybe weren’t fans of
Backstreet Boys are now coming to the
concert going well I like those I
remember those songs you know and a lot
of our fans that may have been too young
for the new kids at the time we’re going
wow you know I remember somehow another
hearing that song to my older sister or
brother you know and those guys are
amazing gentlemen there’s a mutual
respect for each other not only as
people but also for our music
obviously and don’t turn out the lights
you each have your own little part to
sing so I mean was it difficult to get
nine guys on one track I thought it
would be a little bit more difficult
than it actually really ended up being
not even so much about getting us all in
a track but to make it sound cohesive
but we had an amazing producer a guy
named Eman who’s worked with both groups
in the past histories and he wrote a
song with the gentleman Claude Kelly he
did an amazing job I think of equally
having both groups in on the song now
something I think I read that on tour
the new kids are kind of like the big
brothers like the mentors but is that
true yeah you know I can definitely say
that even myself said it several times
that you know we looked at them as like
the first boyband that came out because
some of us before us and you know they
mentored us they definitely had the
whole singing and dancing kind of thing
down a bunch of screaming girls and I
mean what guy wouldn’t want to be a part
of a group kind of like that you know
you know we definitely can give them
credit for inspiring us to be the group
that we are I think to a point like you
know we’ve created our own path you know
we’ve kind of been a little bit more
vocal harmony group basing our style a
little bit more like boys – Manoj Oh –
see
but you know we definitely both attract
a you know very similar fanbase I say
when people go to the concerts it’s like
a girls night out I say for any single
guys that are in town they should
definitely come to this because there’s
a lot of ladies the ratio of ladies to
guys is pretty good
I mean obviously like you said
Backstreet Boys has been around for 18
years how his touring changed for you
guys in that time I can say hasn’t
gotten any less work you know it’s but
at the same time I think we all thrive
off of the work you know I enjoy being
out on the road I enjoy you know
traveling I enjoy going into different
countries they seem you know familiar
faces meeting new fans I think probably
the biggest difference for me now is
that I actually I have a family I’m
married to my beautiful wife and we have
a two-year-old little son that comes out
on the road with us and so now my bus
used to be from the early days of a
single man party bus – you know my wife
having fun – now it’s become my son’s
bus it’s now there’s toys all over the
place it’s a toy land and now we go by
his rules of sleep now on the bus so
that’s that’s probably the biggest
difference of it all that’s a pretty big
change oh yeah
now can I ask are the Backstreet Boys
working on anything new actually we’re
gonna get back in the studio in the fall
to start working on a new album
hopefully to come out sometime next year
and we’re talking about possibly going
to Europe with the new kids in the Block
Backstreet Boys tour the big crews
actually coming up we’re gonna be doing
a cruise in December out of Florida go
into the Bahamas and we had one last
year and it was amazing it was so much
fun and now we had a half above last now
now we’re taking on a whole boat
ourselves with a bunch of fans that’s me
quite exciting
