326 out of every thousand children born
in the United States has autism hi I’m
Christina watchmojo.com and today we’re
going to be talking to some therapists
who work with children with autism so we
can find out more about this disorder so
tell us what exactly is autism autism is
a neurological disorder it affects
children’s communication and their
socialization skills each child is their
own world and that’s why they call the
autism spectrum disorder there are
certain trends that that you would maybe
see often like just difficulty with
language development maybe difficulty
with eye contact but it doesn’t say
prove that if a child has autism that
they are going to have all those traits
it’s the disparity between inside
awareness and outside awareness the
distinction between knowing with us
what’s your feeling is being interpreted
correctly by somebody outside of you
social skills are often a pretty big
challenge and often a focus of therapies
to be able to express themselves in a
socially appropriate way so to know how
to conduct themselves in society now you
are an art therapist how does art
therapy help children with autism I like
to have the children notice what other
kids are doing and notice colors and
possibly be able to associate colors
with emotions so to give them another
avenue of expression maybe instead of
verbal they can express through a
picture or through a color through a
movement how it is that they’re feeling
your specialty is music therapy how does
that work impact children with autism
often times children of autism just
bloom and music maybe there are other
areas where they have a hard time but in
music oftentimes they’re doing just as
well as new typical children and maybe
even better and it’s just a place where
they can be themselves
themselves and practice social skills i
just turned taking and just singing
songs is also very helpful for language
development you specialize in drama
therapy how does that therapy impact
children with autism it’s actually a
very inclusive it’s an embodied therapy
so it works from getting in touch with
your emotions on a physical level as
well as on a cognitive level often
people may assume that a child is not
aware of what’s going on around them or
is not communicating something only
because their cues are attuned to their
own particular personality so with drama
therapy you can get to understand how
that child communicates and allow them
to to create a special language within
that medium it’s very therapeutic for
them as well to know that wow people do
understand me my process in trying to
communicate isn’t um call me thou not
notice is that the hope that they can
evolve and maybe move up the spectrum
and function better in society through
all these different therapies from what
I’ve seen is having the opportunity with
to work of children for maybe a year or
more and being sometimes the only
therapy they’re getting but sometimes
also being part of a team where they’re
getting hold a lot of different
approaches to help these children
develop their there is leaps and bounds
that can be made just in improving the
children’s life quality improving their
ability to to function and to relate to
other people so yes there I think there
really is hope
oh my goodness you are so good at
cleaning cars
