Andrew W.K. On Party Hard Philosophy

he is the king of the party animals hi
I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Andrew W K about party hard as a
philosophy
do you want to describe your live show
for someone who’s not seen it when I was
growing up the first shows I saw were
played by really just older kids in my
school that I went to a school had a lot
of amazing bands in the school going to
the school and I saw them playing these
shows and every one of these bands they
were my first concert I ever went to of
a real rock band or not just like
children’s musician like Rafi I want to
see Rafi a lot of times the first time I
went to see a real band playing everyone
was going crazy everybody the band was
playing with as much intensity as they
could and at that young age I said okay
I guess that’s what this music is like I
guess that’s what you do and I would go
see another band but again from the same
scene and they would just be going crazy
I’m at would be scared
the singer be wearing just under where
people were exposing themselves there
was fake blood flying around I mean it
was disturbing to me but also very
thrilling and so I just assumed okay
when you play high-energy music you’re
supposed to go completely insane
so that’s what we try to do on stage
just give out every bit of energy and
just when you think you don’t have any
more to give that’s kind of actually
where you start giving so by the first
song I usually feel physically ill and
then the rest of the show is can I not
pass out and then at the very end of the
show if I’m not collapsed backstage
completely drenched and puffing then
something was definitely wrong the idea
is just to give all you possibly can
at that moment and like it’s your last
show you ever play but again I love
seeing bands that don’t move at all
because you can focus in on different
things like their facial expression or
like the beauty of their hand playing
the instrument it just happens that this
music that we’re making more or less
demands this kind of performance stuff
do you have any pre-show rituals
stretching that’s pretty much it
drinking some water stretching out
stretching is the main thing it depends
on what kind of show you’re playing but
I think anybody who goes on stage you
want to be limber you want to be warmed
up and if you’re going to be putting on
a very physical performance you’ll
definitely want to give your body out
stretch
now this may or may not be related but
going back to your song party hard would
you describe that as a philosophy oh it
can be it can be someone can choose to
make party hard a way of life I like to
think of partying as doing what you want
to do all the time because normally what
I was taught you’re supposed to do a
bunch of stuff you don’t like to do
maybe during the week and then when
that’s done you’ve earned the right to
have one night or two nights of fun that
just seems completely convoluted to me
that seems like someone tricking us
telling us that the way the world works
is you don’t get to do what you like how
about we do exactly what we like all the
time with the understanding that in fact
that’s how we’ll be most successful
anyway because the amount of work it
takes to be successful requires a lot of
motivation and usually only get your
motivation when you’re doing something
really like to do so why not just do
that all the time and then you really
don’t have to be like set aside time to
celebrate or have fun you’re having all
the time so to me partying and partying
hard is doing what you love to do every
day and that is what life should be so
it is possible it is absolutely possible
to party 365 24 7
do you ever see yourself slowing down
well I imagine I was think about this
the other day at around age 92 age 93
I’m guessing they’ll start to be a
slight drop in my energy a slight drop
in my overall health even which I’m not
happy about but between 80 and 90 though
I should still be going strong I have a
lot of role models out there the growing
stones for example Lee scratch Perry
for example 74 years old can still move
around it looks like a 20 year old man
with the enthusiasm of a 10 year old man
in the best way so it is long again if
you keep doing what you love I think
your body will hold out so that you can
do it for as long as you’re meant to and
then you go die
I think we need to wrap it up now so
thank you very much thank you very much
