Amon Amarth On Swedish Metal

Sweden is well known for its thriving
heavy metal scene and has spawned some
of the most successful bands in the
genre hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome
to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Amon Amarth about their
native country and scene
coming from Sweden you come from a very
healthy metal scene how do you feel that
you fit in stand out from that scene I
would say probably both
anyway we tried to stand out in the past
we definitely did not fit in in Sweden
not a lot of people cared about Amon
Amarth I think it has changed partly
because we’ve gained more popularity in
Sweden than we’ve had in like ever also
we’ve gained the respect of a lot of
like older bands in the Stockholm area
why do you think the scene is thriving
and has thrived so much there’s a lot of
talented musicians as we know I guess
there’s a there are many reasons for it
but for one when we started out for
instance it was quite easy to get you
know rehearsal places and stuff like
that through the community you could
rent a place very cheap could borrow
equipment you can record demos we’re
cheap and I think that’s one of the
reasons why a lot of good bands coming
out of Sweden because kids got the
opportunity to start a band without
having shit loads of money
it also helps like in Sweden if the one
band that breaks through really big like
for example when we were starting
playing and tombed was a really great
band and that helps to create all the
new bands that want to be in their
positions always need a pioneer always
need to need to be that band that breaks
through to a new market or opens a few
doors and then the rest will fall and
tune definitely what is one of those
bands since we
do you like what’s coming out of there
these days honestly I don’t follow the
scene that much guess I am kind of
boring that way
thing is you sort of lose your hunger a
little bit when you get older 18 just
sucking or kind of music I was reading
everything I was listening to everything
and now I’ve just listened to my classic
albums and every now and then you find a
new band which is pretty funny but it
just gets more and more rare scene is so
full of new bands like everywhere and
it’s hard to make a distinction and for
someone who like me that doesn’t care
for like MySpace or whatever it’s hard
to keep track of everything back when we
sort out it was tape trading you know
you sent a demo out maybe get like a
demo back and that’s how you discover
new bands but these days it’s only like
a mouse-click away and you can discover
any band in the world but as good as
that is it’s just too much it’s hard to
find the reasons in the kid
