following a tradition that started when
the Blues were born this company makes
guitars made out of cigar boxes hi I’m
Maya fear and welcome to watchmojo.com
and today we’re talking to daddy mojo to
learn more about cigar box guitars so
when and how did cigar box guitars
originated it’s a turn-of-the-century
thing where poorer musicians couldn’t
afford guitars so essentially they would
take what they could get and oftentimes
with cigar box and this is close to a
guitar which is standard 6 string a
cigar box guitar can be pretty much
anything it can start with a one string
to own all the way up to six the guitars
go on this production table and the
necks are glued to the boxes in this
case it’s been done already we drill
some holes into the tail piece for the
strings to go through and the headstock
has the keys that are mounted on it like
on a regular guitar string through their
respective string hole essentially you
could string them by hand which is these
clever little devices which facilitates
the job in terms of design how do they
differ from an original guitar to a
certain extent it’s maybe less
intimidating instrument a lot of people
who do play a cigar box guitar have a
tendency to have a very sort of rootsy
rough quality to what they do I think
they’re der kind of liberating they
don’t have the big heavy stigma of
standard kids eyes so this is a finish
instruments are deluxe for string model
it has a rosewood fretboard and
mother-of-pearl position markers here
and it has a mini humbucker pickup more
of an electric guitar sound this one is
going to be set up with a piezo pickup
which is essentially a contact
microphone that’s positioned on the
inside of the box it really amplifies
the acoustic properties of the box so
essentially now the pickup has been
connected to the output jack we’re going
to create a recess in the neck and it’s
going to be caboodle
right up here then the boxed is shut
with clamps overnight and we’re on our
way to having a completed instrument
there has been a revival of cigar box
guitars in the recent years what has led
to this resurgence it’s an independent
movement I think in the last few years
we see the do-it-yourself crowd out
there people sort of get fed up of being
fed the same thing over and over and
over and they like the idea of being
able to tinker in their basement or even
deal with makers who can do stuff that’s
particular to them to their needs and to
their tastes we never really have to get
our that sound quite the same
