carolla about his book not Taco Bell
material what made you want to tell your
story I got paid they can it came to me
with money you know I didn’t think hey
man you really gotta write your
autobiography I just like they went
we’re gonna give you money to write
another book and then it’s like all
right so I wrote this book fair answer
I’m glad too honest it’s how it usually
works that come at you with money like
you know when these people go I decided
to create my own essence because I felt
like there’s a void in the market Nana
so I are you getting even say shit like
this yeah I know they’re idiots if
somebody came to them with a whole bunch
of money and said make something smells
good or don’t we’ll make it just put
your name on it and that’ll be that
Mariah it’s like at Mariah Carey’s
walking around seeing the 400 different
brands of colognes and perfumes and
going it’s just not enough riety here I
need something that smells like me yeah
no no people go to you and then they
give you money and then you do it yeah
it’s like that with everything and show
business that’s true so for this
interview sorry wait a minute I couldn’t
pay for this did you want to be a
comedian as a kid I just thought it’s
gonna play sports I never really thought
beyond that and then when I sort of
found out I couldn’t play sports and
then well what I found out is everyone
else wanna play sports too and they’re
better is if that’s what you find out I
think everyone has that aha moment yeah
that was like uh yea which was a real
less aha more uh oh hmm but either way
was a moment uh oh I I knew that that
there were comedians and that there was
such a thing as getting paid to do
comedy but it was not was never gonna be
me you know it’s like you know about the
lottery right hey you know think terms
of you know well that’s my 401k is that
lottery ticket now you just assume other
people win that right what comedians
were you crafting yourself after who are
your comedic idols just Chong not Cheech
and just Laurel and not Hardy what I
would like to do is pick duo’s and pick
my favorite and then no uh I I like I
thought George Carlin was funny I would
listen to a show called dr. Demento that
just played weird songs you know weird
stupid literally weird owl songs when he
would record in the bathroom with his
accordion back in the day and you know
just anything you know laughing saturday
night live like a love Saturday Night
Live you know it wasn’t like oh one day
I’m gonna be a cast member of Saturday I
just watching gun you know Bill Murray’s
funny you know that was about it it
wasn’t like that’s what I’m gonna be
would you say the book has a life lesson
yeah III think it’s good i think it’s
funny and I think it’s just sort of
moves in a linear fashion and yes dart
poor and you stay porn then you get a
little bore and then you work hard and
you kind of work your way up and each
chapter’s sort of begins with this you
know shows the home and blah blah blah
that i lived in at the time or the
apartment or whatever and you see the
sort of broken-down places and
eventually it gets a little nicer at the
end and yeah i think there’s a real good
message there which is you know do what
you do work hard stay at it no real
gifts in life but you know universe
doesn’t hate you I have to bring up the
controversy first off I didn’t call the
guy and go I want to talk about men and
women I think I interviewed me about
knocking Taco Bell material and then
some point I don’t know why but probably
because of this he said who’s funnier
men or women
and I said men are funnier had to pick
one yep I mean you know it’s like I
always say like you know who’s better
marathons Eskimos or canyons you know
like pick one canyons oh you hate you
hate Eskimos sweat comes out like so and
I went on to say some slightly more
offensive things but then I went on and
said of course there’s a bunch of funny
women you know Tina Fey and Kathy
Griffin and sarah silverman blah blah
blah and so that’s what I did and then
everyone just grabbed the adam said
women aren’t funny so I did not say
women aren’t funny by the way he lakad
