so what I’m thinking about a journey
into and how that synergize with chance
favorite or lucky they say people are
lucky well so as you all think about the
point offer to the journey of doing new
things of college or etc yeah it may be
unknown but if you appeared money it
won’t be as far are they let’s talk
about one of the original Mark
Zuckerberg Bill Gates this is John at
one point the richest person in the
country
well how did Standard Oil what he did is
he supplied all the world from well this
is pre electricity so all lamps across
this country across the world all like
but he had appeared about the same time
that was happening Henry Ford and others
came up with the automobile and one of
the byproducts the waste products in his
purification process for lamp oil was
gasoline he skyrocketed at that point
became the richest man in the country
because he hadn’t prepared money what
else can I do in this issue how about
this person and apologize Scottish
person he’s the person who was working
as well 1927 1928 decided to take a
month vacation took all of the petri
dishes stacked up up in the corner came
back and a few of them had this fungus
growing and he noticed the one that had
the fungus brother had no bacteria on
the plate he’s the person who discovered
penicillin
why was because he had prepared didn’t
what’s the facts for this gentleman his
character was he meant something called
the polymerized chain imagine anybody’s
interested in biology this is the system
that allows you to replicate massive
that’s they came in much smaller than
this imagine if yourself won’t have to
have this is my kid wouldn’t fit but you
have to pull yourself home behind you in
a wagon well these guys accidentally but
they were prepared and so let’s be clear
every single cell phone on the planet we
don’t know this yet I Mark Zuckerberg
well before Facebook he came up with
Facemash he was just trying to share I’m
different people or rape different
people or on colleges college campus
starting his own college then went a
little viral he I wanted it Prince
didn’t want it dark month except etc and
then the Facebook and it went beyond
campuses and they had the dropping the
terms up and just called the Facebook
he was he was a witch now services so
indeed this can leave us really nailed
it Lisa chance favorite so I always have
to talk a little bit about my church so
my journey well start with this I put
this up yes that’s the good old days
when I could actually grow here what’s
so the sad part is I can’t grow here
anymore what I spilled rule at night was
my attorney to go from there to being a
senior vice president this is for
younger folks old school football and
that will out of money growing up had a
hustled a group a bunch of really cold
winters bringing the papers end up
getting a little change finally let me
spend a little bit of money and so what
downstairs found the moblab cut the
cable and did not have your skills no
robotics I wish I did I tied them
together I plugged it into the wall best
10 seconds of my life chart my parents
from the care of me so what you just
take your doing here
[Music]
that’s the person jumping into that it
was really amazing you know even though
a group in Canada just so you’re clear
most Canadians have no idea of the
native population that lives in the
Arctic so that was really cool charting
that unknown I lived in Haiti for about
one year working on easels vaccinations
products that I mean what an incredible
country that’s storied with initially a
lot of big problems but the people
my favorite is we actually had that we
started six years ago
anybody participated in change this is
not a science festival with a hundred
events in and around the creative city
of Philadelphia so I’m going to make
sure that stem you guys have done in
STEM Academy actually participate it’s
really cool we do all kinds of amazing
things in the building building hands-on
robotics then the most important point
is everybody who participates does some
kind of hand on hand and it’s really
we did and we had we got funding from
USAID case which stands for the
education consortium the advancement of
STEM education in Egypt we are literally
creating stem high school life doors all
the way in Egypt we started – in 2011 we
now have nine instead of schools in nine
or learnings in DC USA is the funder
ties in Cleveland and then that middle
stuff my Arabic got a little better
that’s the Ministry of Education for you
all right
the school is radically different it is
based on Grand Challenges this country
here has something called the National
Academy of Engineering no you know sir
these are the best and brightest
engineers
country and they came up with with 14
grand challenges that if they solve
these they’ll make the country a better
place everything like clean water better
understanding the nitrogen cycle
reverses and grant go through all of
them but if we can solve these bad
challenges will make not just us a
better place well we built a curriculum
based on that and so we worked with some
people from engineers and I’ll hope it
to other people that education in need
and we identified the grand challenges
that face of that country and these high
school students come in and from jump in
September all of their work their
science technology engineering biology
and their Narvik and the history all of
the work is governed around solving
these realtruck real challenges and we
realize that no point give me the kid
fake problem entrust them to have their
creativity give them the real problem
and it’s amazing what these students
have done in just three or four short
years here are some pictures
they all have projects to do ultimately
leading up to capstone experience here’s
some projects you can’t fake it when
you’re showing what you’ve created
whether it works or not you understand
what the processes are here’s some of
the young names of all those who call
money stem schools maybe school this is
an incredible water purification device
that can be Salim eight water in a very
short or cost-efficient of time then
they have their massive capstone
showcase this is what it looks like
those of you who’ve gone to science
fairs
this is science fairs on steroids these
are not little spoons between projects I
call these real scientists and little
people bodies it’s so amazing what they
do and what they accomplish here’s just
one of the posters carbon dioxide
filtration
really incredible stuff of course the
so this is the world’s largest
competition throughout the world so
these girls came in second placement he
did these girls came in first place in
Egypt and if you win in your country you
have to qualify for the world champions
which happens here in the United States
it rotates between Pittsburgh and
Phoenix here’s a young man on the far
left he came in third these kids are
winning national international the girls
that came in first in Egypt then came to
Las Vegas I’m sorry Los Angeles for the
competition in 2014 and you can see them
all excited they actually won third in
the world right now again these are
girls in Egypt where you know it’s tough
to be a woman in Egypt these kids should
be married at 16 you know two and three
four or five kids that have 25 yet these
girls are coming to third in the world
competing it’s the best and the
brightest but it’s all possible because
we gave them challenges and they rose to
the occasion but my favorite is this
this is First Lady Michelle Obama I wish
I could play this but I can’t play this
here she actually referenced one of our
students last year when she talked about
they called the student by name who was
she talking about
this is where to get woman buzzing NASA
in January 2016 you can’t read them but
NASA named planetary object number three
one nine zero this young lady comes from
one of the poorest villages in Egypt but
she’s super brain and now so yes sir dr.
Lucas dark indeed chance does favorite the prepared mine and that’s what
