Why Memes Are More Important than Books | Aldo Polanco | TEDxMCSchool

why memes are more important than books
I can already hear my literature
teachers over the years sighing and
disappointment
my parents wondering what kind of child
have they raised but sadly this whole
talk is not just clickbait I actually do
believe that memes are more important
than books but maybe I’ll disappoint
them a little less if I explain how
memes have become more impactful than
books I’m 17 and my feelings about memes
can be described in one image born too
late to explore the earth burn too soon
to explore the galaxy born just in time
to browse dank memes and it’s true less
than a hundred years ago people were
starting to develop satellite Earth
imagery and surely less than 100 years
from now we will be sending manned
missions to outer space to distant
planets but I’m stuck in the dank meme
air-sea news are such abstract concepts
they can range from words to people to
images to dancers to just about anything
and such you can’t really define them
but the one definition I want you to
stick with is ideas memes are ideas
the only real defining characteristic
they have is that they are share from
person to person whether it’s through
social media or in real life as such I
can’t really describe and generalize the
durability of a meme but I can surely
try to generalize the life cycle it goes
through and for that I present the life
curve of a meme it all starts when the
meme is created and posted against
traction on sites like Reddit Instagram
Tumblr 4chan Twitter where memes are
popular it keeps on the rise until a
famous person talks about it or posts a
or literally invites the meme on their
talk show I’m talking about you Adam
Jenner’s so people start getting a
little bit sick of it onto the one pizza
place who thinks their marketing team is
really cool decides to post on Twitter
it’s
starts its rapid decline and then your
mother realizes is the one cute
character from Despicable Me and posts
it on her Facebook and then it’s all
downhill from there this is why I think
memes have been so impactful
they changed with our society and we
live in a world that is rapidly changing
and thus so have memes much like
literature memes can be divided into
movements literature has been described
as movements such as romanticism and
realism and such what memes can be
divided as well in 2012 these two memes
became really popular these are what it
called mean characters the man on the
right is called bad luck Brian well the
lady on the left is called the overly
attached girlfriend see meme characters
revolve around one single trait that
defines their being so these they have
situations that arise around them around
that single characteristic the one on
the left just simply has bad luck while
the one on the lady on the right just
has this stalker like behavior and so
these memes they’ve created this sort of
attitude where it’s not happening
realistically to anybody so I can laugh
and not feel bad about it as such I
decided to divide memes and books and
their comparison to three points
the first one is viewership so memes
have been described as the fast food of
media they’re quick they have bright
colors and they’re spread really easily
perfect for the modern person who either
has no time or just doesn’t have the
attention span in sheer numbers the
Bible the most sold book on earth has 5
million billion copies sold according to
the Guinness Book of World Records
while this besito on YouTube has five
billion 77 million views and this just
goes to show how media can spread
anything very easily the second point is
credibility and this is the one where
you go oh right but anybody can make me
miss how does that make them credible
well it certainly sure
but at the same time we live in a world
where I can go on Amazon and publish a
book about a secretly gay president who
decides to thwart a zombie invasion or a
space rapture but invasion see these are
actual books published on Amazon they’re
both rated 5 stars for anybody wondering
so in a way both books and memes kind of
fail this test the third one is content
and this is most definitely where you
say books have memes books they have
pages they have words they have a China
pages most of the time while memes at
most have a word a phrase sometimes not
even anything and to that you’re right
but the thing with memes is that our
culture doesn’t change just because it’s
shown once or twice but through the
repetition of it does all culture change
to accept it and to talk about what it
stands for such is the case for what
we’re going through right now which are
relatable memes memes that troll
sometimes too far into self deprecation
in order to get a funny point across or
a relatable ism across avait you could
say this is an example of one so memes
like this have changed our current
generation into being one of if not the
most mental health aware generations in
history and as such I must go in through
the next topic which is politics I think
it’s enough to say that a whole
political movement has adopted paper the
Frog a meme as its mascot fortune one of
the sites with the most internet
presence literally celebrated Donald
Trump’s win with phrases like we
actually elected a meme as prescient and
use every weapon in our meme arsenal to
turn blacks and Hispanics away from
Hillary these the site they spammed
pro-trump hashtags trending into Twitter
they spam Trump for polls they even
managed to convince news agencies that
the okay sign is a sign for white power
if this is a main power I truly don’t
know what is and I certainly don’t mean
any of this as an anti book rant
it’s quite the opposite of what it is
but all I’m saying is that memes have
become the central character at where
books used to be and if this is a good
or bad thing it’s ultimately up to put
to your own opinion however I do want to
implore especially older people before
seeing a meme and thinking all those
darn kids at it again with their
internet trends really look into the the
opinion you’re dismissing just because
it’s in a meme and hey sometimes it’s
just something stupid and trendy but
it’s not like Twilight was a sacred
literature I mean so so take a step back
analyze the meme if he has a political
or mental health of opinion or something
like that and if it doesn’t just let it
be it’s not like it’s harming anybody
