When facing addiction, get back up | Paul Churchill | TEDxYouth@Vail

you
what do I excel at if I’m standing up
here today talking with you guys I’ve
got to be good it’s something right but
before I get into that let me show you a
number I’ve been knocked down fifteen
thousand six hundred and eighty seven
times however the only figure that
matters is this one I’ve gotten back up
fifteen thousand six hundred and eighty
eight times yeah I excel at getting back
up after getting knocked down it doesn’t
matter how many times you’ve been
knocked down it only matters if you get
back up I’m like popular clown
you know the inflatable clown with the
weighted base when you have punches it
just pops right back up rendering its
opponents utterly exhausted yeah I’m the
real-life human versus a Bop oh the
clown I like to call this the BOP Oh
strategy I faced many failures in my
lifetime the experience is no shortage
of challenges but simply getting back up
has gotten me through all of these so in
2011 I found myself facing three
pressing issues number one I didn’t like
my job number two after my grad school
student loans kicked in on top of my
undergraduate student loans I found that
my expenses were exceeding my income now
this is a huge problem if you want to
buy anything cool in life
number three I seem to be facing the foe
that was getting stronger over time I
couldn’t quite figure it out
I seem to pop those strategy who’s not
having any effect the more I got back up
the harder I got knocked down I begin to
wonder do I stay down do I play dead but
figuring the boppo strategy would
eventually prevail
I pushed forward and I started to
address these issues in my life
so in 2011 I quit my job and I started a
mobile wedding DJ business called
Bozeman DJ when I first started this it
seemed like no was the most popular word
in the world I call a wedding venue and
say hey my name is Paul with Bozeman DJ
I’d like to be on your list of
recommended vendors they say no that
list is all full look on your website
just a little spot on the bottom can’t
squeeze me in no oh okay thank you for
your time
fast-forward to today we the largest DJ
company in the area and we’re going to
over 150 weddings just this summer alone
in 2012 I started a vending route
I walk into locations and say hey my
name is Paul I love the place of the
table the dartboard maybe some other
arcade games in your establishment no
y’all fool my seat empty corner in this
spot there you sure
oh thank you for your time after a long
list of knows I finally landed in the
location and today I’ve got almost a
hundred games averaging eight thousand
five hundred dollars apiece and almost
in nine locations in 2013 I started an
adult rec sports league called up the
city hey my name is Paul and I’d like to
reserve some field space for an upcoming
league
wait what’s that every field park patch
of grass is booked for the next couple
of years
dominated thank you for your time today
we’ve got these being played all across
the city all year round with over a
thousand participants so here I am and
2014
three the successful businesses under my
belt I thought I had it all figured out
the bottle strategy was really paying
off however there was still this beau
his adversary that couldn’t quite figure
out it was like a 10,000 pound real on
my back that was out in the 5,200 pounds
per day and let me tell you why this
opponent was so powerful and so baffling
it would lie to me and my own voice it
would tell me that it didn’t have a
problem it crushed me spiritually
physically and mentally it destroyed my
self confidence and my self-esteem I was
beginning to face financial and legal
repercussions and it made me feel like I
was the only person in the entire world
facing this issue now you might imagine
an opponent like this we got a long
spiky tail breathe fire or fly but it
didn’t so what was it well it was
alcohol it was alcohol that kept
knocking me down and I couldn’t figure
it out after all I was over the age of
21 everyone else around me see you
drinking normally without any issues
what is going on there seems a bicoastal
strategy has finally been stifled it was
not yielding for this I result so I
decided to do some research I went to
dr. Google and WebMD what I concluded
was that alcohol definitely was the
problem
what I learned was that given my genetic
makeup after drinking enough alcohol I
eventually became addicted to it so what
does this mean
I always thought for one to develop a
drinking problem they needed read for
years in the 50s and 60s and our boat
so that was age 28
addicted to alcohol what does this mean
am I am I an alcoholic what I couldn’t
quite figure it out so with the boppo
one morning the popular clown lying flat
on his back
I took it honest and clear look at my
life and decided that I needed to quit
drinking and fast now quitting drinking
and getting sober is not easy in fact
that’s probably the understatement of a
lifetime but luckily on September 7th
2014 I got sober and then remaining
sober ever since now you guys might be
saying yourself oh my
this poor guy became an alcoholic in his
late teens in his mid-twenties at such a
young age well that’s not how I see it
according to the World Health
Organization only 1 in 10 get sober and
receive the treatment that they need
in fact I’m one of the lucky ones to be
standing on this stage right here
talking with you guys
85,000 Americans over 3 million people
worldwide will die this year through the
alcohol related issues and guess what
I’m not gonna be one of them as I
mentioned you think so learn it’s not
easy so in 2014
I found that I needed accountability and
my quest for sobriety so I started the
recovery elevator podcast
since then the podcast has been
downloaded over 1 million times in all
50 states and over hundred and thirty
countries I’d like to think that the
success in growth of the podcast as
steward the fact that the content is
just mesmerizing that the production
quality is fantastic but I know it’s
because there’s so many people out there
struggling with alcohol so in 2015
without the 10,000 pound world on my
back but to Bach though the clown who
was standing straight up and no longer
drinking I was able to start to more
businesses when I first start of that
the South sounded ball that’s probably
the silliest idea I’ve ever heard that
that is not gonna work
no one’s ever yeah I want to use that
however bring you with these two
businesses bringing the total talent to
five they are open and probably the day
thank you Bobbo strategy now i want to
circle the wagons to talk a little bit
more about addiction and alcohol it’s
time to shred the shame there’s
absolutely nothing to be ashamed about
in 1956 the american food medical
association classified alcoholism
addiction as a disease what i’ve learned
while having over 120 interviewees on
the podcast is that how call ism is not
a moral failing it is not a sign of we
care too and it does not segregate i’ve
been urging doctors lawyers engineers
even a CEO of a fortune 500 company and
what i have concluded after chatting
with hundreds who have been successful
in sobriety is the very best way to
tackle this issue is to community the
cure to this disease is not located
behind closed doors in secretive
conversations or hopes that one might
simply grow out of it but the solution
involves open dialogue hume unity and
full community support and we need to
look at this for what it really is a
disease and not a sign of weakness now i
encourage you with whatever you’re
struggling with today and if you or
someone you know are struggling with
addiction I encourage you to get back up
because together we can do this
thank
you
