What we can learn from narcissists | Keith Campbell | TEDxUGA

The word “narcissism” is very similar to the word “love”
We use it and discuss it, but we do not know its meaning
We do not know at all whether we have interlocutors
The same definition we have for the word
The word “narcissism” is particularly complex
For the strangeness of its history in Greek and Roman mythology
The story is based on a person named Narcissius
Who was young and handsome
He wanders through the forest in search of his life
Many of those who submitted it had refused
And the most famous of them (Echo) who was repeating all that is said
Narcissius stumbled and saw a reflection of his image on the water page
I immediately get mad at the image that has been frozen
And died in the same spot
A flower grew there,
A water lily is called the daffodil flower today
The term narcissism or self-love entered psychology in various forms
First used by Havelock Ellis
A British sex scientist
He spoke of self-love as a detailed sexual description
I will not address that
(Audience laughs)
Freud then borrowed the term and used it in several ways
We discuss this basic love or self-esteem
Which the child may carry for himself
Our relationship and our relationship with our ambitions
And even linked to the issue of leadership
Today in psychology the term has three facets
Or there are three ways to describe narcissism
This is the source of difference and confusion
When most of you think about the concept of narcissism
It is more likely to mean inflated narcissism
These people – and those who believe – believe in their importance
He may be a very bold person
Or perhaps with an attractive or social character
Or he may be an indifferent person who believes in his entitlement
It may be manipulative exploiting people and deliberately injuring them
And when you think of the classic narcissistic personality
Politicians and leaders
What you think of is the bloated narcissism
The second type of narcissism is uncommon
Unless you are in the field of clinical psychology
It is narcissistic sensitive
Those with sense of merit
Self centered but more shy
They are worried and suffer from a lack of self-esteem
They are also very sensitive to criticism
They can be described as empty narcissists
And the difficulty of identifying them will not find them much
Half of them are vandals who are shy because they are shy
And sometimes bungeese bunker
To live in their mothers’ basement connected to the Internet all the time
Hoping to get the attention they deserve
With their fear of going out and meeting people
In the end, both types express personality traits
All of us may carry these qualities with different intensity
Your narcissistic may be inflated or sensitive,
But the challenge here or one of the challenges,
It is when you are narcissistic
Your narcissism sweeps all walks of your life
Which may lead to other problems
Imagine going to work and you think:
“Everyone flirts with me, how wonderful I am”
You may believe it but when you return home and say:
“Your father is wonderful, my children”
And to your wife: “Dear, do you know how wonderful I am?”
If it does so without any control over the situation
It will end up your emotional and professional life
You will be diagnosed clinically as a patient
The third type is the narcissistic personality disorder
Rarely falling relative
It can affect 1% to 2% of the population at any time
So when we talk about narcissism today or when I talk about it today
I often want to talk about bloated narcissism
Because that is what we mean generally when we talk about narcissism
Which is the subject of most studies
Because bloated narcissism has real benefits in life
Most of us see narcissism as something bad
No one says, “I am a narcissist!”
Or “I know you my friend is a real narcissist!”
(Laughter)
It is a description as long as it was rejected and despised
But in the case of inflated narcissism, it may be useful
Narcissistic sufferers have the ability to start social relationships
You go to the bar and someone approaches you
He is often confident and attractive
Whatch out! Danger zone!
(Laughter)
But the same people once they are in a relationship will face problems
Because they have the ability to betray
And the ability to manipulate people
They also like control
The same applies to leadership
This inflation is very useful to become a leader
Whether in an organization or in a political party
But the problem is that once you reach the helm
Narcissians offer many risks
They do things to get attention
They also suffer from moral problems that will destroy them
The usefulness of narcissism is evident in the media, for example
Especially in social networking platforms
For a decade we have been researching narcissism and social networking
And we came to the fact: that it really has a benefit!
Many friends and followers of narcissistic people
Their activity increases
They are more interactive
They take more personal pictures
And personal images to be their whole bodies
Do not just flip
(Laughter)
They do it
They are successful in the media
If you think of social networking sites without narcissism
It would seem a fact free of pleasure
I mean there will be only cat pictures
(Laughter)
Or someone might ask, “Hello Keith, how are you, man?”
“I’m fine.” The dialogue ends
(Laughter)
In fact, I began to think about this issue during a workshop on narcissism
Like the rest of my lectures
The students were busy with their phones during the workshop
She went to a female student
To see what she was looking at
One of the girls of the famous Kardashian family was a picture of Kelly Jenner
She drives a Ferrari in Los Angeles
The subject surprised me!
First, she did nothing but drive her car
I thought and contemplated the subject
“Oh my God, what a genius!”
I have canceled media mediation and changed its features
Earlier in the old days
If you want to show a realistic program about the life of Kelly Jenner
I protested to a group of people
Different texts or at least a product of work
Other personalities and other preparations
You do not know what that means at the end of the movie
He then collects the work and sends it to a television network
The network will show it to everyone and your fans
Kelly got rid of it all!
She used her phone to photograph herself and sent it to her fans
That’s great! A tremendous change
“How superficial does it seem?”
I mean, this is not the most important news in the world
But many have used this positively
The most famous application for that
Is challenging ice bucket
Which you know or perhaps have participated in
The aim was to raise awareness and raise funds
For ALS
It is a terrible disease and exhausting
The idea behind the challenge is either to donate
Or the heart of a bucket full of snow on your head
Or ask your friends to do so
Narcissism was successful
Who simply wants to do that?
“Look at me, check me well, you’ve challenged me and it’s very cool!”
It is interesting to add to its narcissism
I did it with my children “Come on, throw a bucket of snow on your father’s head!”
Many people have participated
But narcissism played a big role in the subject
And actually succeeded!
If we can actually exploit narcissism
With a view to achieving positive goals and achieving positive results
I’m not the first person
Discovers that in the modern social and economic world
A little narcissism is required
But I think the balance must be set
Today there are teachers, professors and consultants like me
Tell children: “You must be the leaders of thinkers”
“You must make your own label”
Yes, maybe, but maybe also you can meditate a bit and think
In the end, you may become a think tank
(Laughter)
You may have a good reputation
“I’m a good person and I’m doing a good job.”
And then focus on your distinctive label and not what you’ll wear in jackets and everything else
I think there is a process that can be followed
This has happened to me
While my daughter was in kindergarten
One of her teachers gave her a job entitled “Everything about me”
His idea was “Write about the skill of your excellence”
She was at home asking me, “Dad, what skill do I have?”
I said to her: “I do not know, I personally do not have the skill to distinguish me
My wife said, “I do not have a special skill”
I said: “Because the only child who had a distinctive skill
It was the spirit of a two-year-old child who embodied the spirit of Lama in Tibet
I had a statue of the Buddha and it was so beautiful
Otherwise, no other child has a distinctive skill “
She ended up describing herself as nice
The fact is that this is not something special or skillful
But it’s a very important description as you know
(Laughter)
I mean, it is better than describing itself as “evil”, for example
(Laughter)
So I am so relieved
I think the idea is
We can learn a lot of narcissism by learning about narcissism
Of narcissists in our lives
Learn what should and should not be done
What we can learn is how to present ourselves to others
be confident
Do not be afraid to pour a bucket of ice over your head if the target is Samia
Or to expand in the field of social communication
Even if they were not reconciled to that idea
But we must also know not to let the bloated ego dominate our lives
We and that ego are not one thing
In fact, the best definition I have for Anna
It is a tool in the kit box
You want to use it and then return it to its place
Then go on and enjoy your life
Thank you very much
