hi to the kiswahili speakers on a human
army a body ll kill em – we are together
facing the delusions of our society of
our belief systems you are the cleverest
people in the world such beautiful
people sit before me today because you
came here to expand to ask yourself
better questions than you did yesterday
we’ll probably have 200,000 or however
many thoughts today the problem is that
most of them will be the same as the
ones we had yesterday this is about
black this is about white this is about
you this is about we together right now
we can ask better questions that all of
us in this globe in this human family
are facing right now so I will start by
challenging a belief system which is
poisoned the lives of so many people
across this world we the human family
simply have to be better than this as
far as I understand there are clever of
people than me in the room this color is
white as far as I understand this color
is the reflection of all colors and
therefore no particular color is that
true thank you for enlightening me
that’s a beautiful colorful dress you’re
wearing so therefore here is the color
white I would ask you if you see anybody
white in this room
I heard my daughter just squeak yes I
have lived in Kenya as part of your
family in your fabulous country for 12
years
I look around among so many hues of
melanin and whatever labels we want to
put on each other and I see nobody black
in this room I am wearing a black suit I
personally have never seen a black
person in my life that is my truth what
about you so why are we platting on is
Michelle Obama with Oprah Winfrey
recently asked why are we talking about
things that don’t matter I see one of
the world’s best spoken word poets in
the room Mufasa kerbed a poetic genius
who comes to visit me regularly I see my
good friend Chico here a great and
fabulous speaker and author of no doubt
what will become an award-winning book
as that microphone God and the fact is
that I know and your women will testify
that we are men and only men I have
absolute certainty that your body parts
are in exactly the same place as my body
parts honor
macho Pooh I would suggest to you that
we had just the same and you women I
have to tell you beautiful women all
over the world you are emotionally the
same as women I have met in the 22
countries that I have worked in you are
women all over the world you are just as
beautiful all over the world and I’m
done sure your body parts doing exactly
the same twice as every other woman in
Sydney Australia where I grew up before
life brought me to this fabulous place
in 1870 10% of Africa was under
so-called work
what were white Western whatever
European control by 1920 that figure was
close to 90% whilst labeling the African
savages the visitors unleashed a
barbarism on African people which is one
of the great unwritten untold stories
150 years later after the Congo was
raped over and people were taught to
chop arms off I remember as a child
let’s not get too depressed
I remember watching TV shows in
Australia Tarzan remember Tarzan oh and
there’d be some British lady while there
were hundreds of Porter’s carrying her
luggage so she could wear an evening
dress to dinner and she would appear
from behind the mosquito net in the
movie and place her hand say oh it’s so
dastardly hot or the words of those
incessant drums and some pipes Oh King
ignoramus well we’re here to civilize
the savages a what I do hope they can
understand that after all we have guns
and we have machetes and we know how to
do this travel warnings let’s talk about
travel warnings yes I’m an angry man as
we must go beyond the colour of black
and white to begin to peel away the
layers I have two daughters the result
of a union with a Kenyan and myself what
label will we place on them now I see
two Yali lawyers in the rim both of whom
as far as I understand have shaken hands
with Obama
I see powerful ideas I didn’t know ideas
how to color easy money no yahwah’s zoom
goon oh this is a white man’s idea
I remember going into a school when I
arrived in deepest darkest Africa oh yes
incessant drums that give me awake all
night deepest darkest I want to ask you
a question what’s deep about it can I
ask you a question
what’s dark about it now is Africa a
country or a continent when are we going
to wake up from the delusion of
difference of the delusion of our you
don’t understand as always told within
my first three weeks of being in Kenya I
was working in a school in Kier and
Garrow
Kieran Garrow anybody know that north of
Nakuru I used to walk up to into the
village of Nakuru in in Kieran Garrow
and Kieran Guerra a village would walk
out to look at me I mean that was funny
and I would teach in the schools and as
soon as I started asking questions about
African children the finger went up
nananananana you don’t understand
these are African children they need to
be beaten I had an image of an African
child coming out of the womb and saying
Oh American baked me the delusion of
difference the delusion of difference
when our common challenges far outweigh
our liabilities of difference of the
delusion that somehow there is space
between us the way that means more the
way that wants to challenge after we
corrupted and built up a delusion of
white and black and smashed cultures up
against each other very similar to us
happened in that in South America when
when the Spanish were there we then
created a partners we brutalized African
people in this country Kenya not we we I
know you’re smarter than that
we brutalized people in order to educate
and civilize we eventually gave up and
abandoned our ways I remember watching
Tarzan swings through
who the trees speaking with the animals
and as Muhammad Ali so eloquently
pointed out many many years ago isn’t it
strange Tarzan
white boy swings through the trees can
talk to the animals African people few
million years here you can’t do that hey
what do you been doing immediately you
know this is funny that isn’t it because
we need someone to come here and we’re
still playing Tarzan so I came here and
watched a child Union throughout the
schools of Kenya bereft of sports bereft
to play bereft of art so I decided to
pitch in and do him a little bit and
started a sports organization and like
other great entrepreneurs like Chico in
this room and the faster there and so
many others whose names I don’t know and
the fabulous speakers you’ve heard today
I started to have a go as we say in
Australia I just started to do something
that might make a difference to other
people the delusion of me could take a
back seat in our lives against the
delusion of we could take the front seat
the we the trouble with our thinking is
that so many of the thoughts today will
be about me this is what this odd man
has learned in his life what I’m
thinking about when I’m suffering I’m
thinking about me when I start thinking
about you all that goes away who can I
be of service to today who can I help
who could I so I started a sports
organization and there was lots of this
is not gonna work and this is not you in
this sort of typical entrepreneur thing
that I’m sure you guys all know how you
just keep doing it because you love it
and you want to make a difference with
your lives like so many people have come
here to make a difference in our lives
today the we the way that’s smart enough
to get over it the way that wants to
move forward that we’re not special that
we’re not different I was watching a
talk show in America once I couldn’t
believe it you know those talk shows
that thrive on the negativity of others
I got to tell you was so offensive there
was this guy on this TV talk show and he
said well everybody knows black people
are stupid
and I thought to miss it like stupid
like Chico stupid like Nelson Mandela
stupid like maybe Obama stupid like
opera Winfrey maybe stupid like Mahatma
Gandhi
what is this delusion of difference that
we can somehow confuse development
issues with race-based issues that don’t
exist we can’t solve a problem until we
can be honest with each other and let it
go let it go I dream of a world that has
listened to Nelson Mandela and that me
in my remaining years and my beautiful
children can be judged according to the
color of their hearts because the heart
doesn’t have a color and neither does an
idea here comes an idea oh it’s a white
man’s idea oh it’s a black man’s idea or
polla was China kabisa it’s a woman’s
idea Hey how smart are women wake up way
smarter than the men are ever going to
be at about 100 things and I applaud you
for that you’ve taught me so much you’ve
taught me so much and I thank you very
very much for that so I came here and I
began to learn and I removed the
prejudice of Tarzan is here to help I
began to infiltrate and listen and learn
about the incredible and astonishing
beauty of African culture hey you’re
late here welcome to my home you know
you turn up to my house you go with a
few people extra that I wasn’t you know
what they’re doing in the West did you
know he was bringing other people what
are we gonna do now we’ll never find
beds now I’ve got something to worry
about did you know the phone network
went down and should move once for an
hour oh there was chaos in the city and
the newspapers the next day did you know
that we got Safaricom to all my friends
in Sydney and the rest of the world why
you think in Africa’s still stuck in the
deep darkest we’ve got a phone system or
we can move money around way quicker
than you can did you know that this car
tree is one of the three to five nations
in Africa that is growing faster than
your cities and your countries have done
in the last ten years did you know that
I have been privileged to see the
experience of massive growth in this
powerful amazing city of Nairobi
surrounded by incredibly powerful young
generation of people making a difference
and Sydney ain’t grown as quick as that
and neither is New York
neither is London neither is Europe and
while we talk with this supercilious
sense of superiority from the west and
we arrive in our business class travel
because I’m here to help the poor and we
did a fund raising you know to find
champagne I don’t know about you I never
see any poor people at the fundraisers
the champagne I say how are you let’s
get a selfie with somebody famous but
what’s that got to do with you what’s
that got to do with ours what’s that got
to do with making a difference so I’m
gonna be a little on the edge here I
happen to know a sports organization
mine little sports organization is just
in there doing its thing and there’s the
with just a small twelve thousand a week
doing sports with us and 50 Kenyan jobs
the so-called world’s largest sports
organization gonna be a little tough
here has high paid offices in Zurich in
London and I travel business class to
yet another capacity building workshop
in some cool place like Paris you get
where we’re going and if you read the
fine print ladies and gentlemen the very
fine print guess what the people on the
ground in Africa get to volunteer for
some air time and some fear way to go
the abomination of tide aid of which the
USA and Australia the country I grew up
are the most shameful predators on the
whole aid business the effective
marketing of poverty and
here to help 52% and 51% respectively of
all a donated by those governments go
straight back in and must be tied
directly to Western people you are
already Western people you are already
the richest people in the world when is
enough enough it’s simply good business
to do business with Africa it’s good
business to do business is it not does
that make sense
whilst people here on a hundred and
twenty dollars a month are paying taxes
to pay back with money that were
borrowed this is madness Mother Teresa
in the Nobel Peace acceptance got off
the plane walked down and showed us what
it really is all about when she said
excuse me what did you say there’s an
acceptance party with a big meal do me a
favor cancel the banquet oh no you don’t
understand
though all the world’s leaders are going
to be there and it’s really important
all these important people are gonna be
there
she said do me a favor cancel the
banquet tell the truth tell the truth
about what it means to reach out to
another human being without prejudice
without the delusion of I’m helping you
drop that ego what service can we as a
collective past race religion Barrett
want to know what we’ve got to teach the
world here in this incredibly great
country we can teach the world that you
don’t need plastic bags we don’t muck
around we just do it
hi Western people you can catch up
anytime you like we can also teach you
that Islam and Christianity have
survived together and worked together
and coexisted together for 450 years
right here and there is hardly any issue
what’s wrong with you want to come to
Kenya maybe we’ll show you how to live
and when you do arrive at my home Chico
with six people guess what
care because in Danny Rojo Yongle inside
my heart
I’m an African and I’m so happy that you
guys have taught me what true
possibility without judgment you know
and we always find a bed and we do right
incredible books and sometimes we get
people standing up saying oh do you
Africans read oh I’ve got no doubt that
Chico’s amazing book will be an award
winner all over Africa and I’m sure that
some llamas like me are gonna read that
book I sure AM I’m sure that you’re here
to make a difference I’m here to make a
difference what about you beyond white
black what about you at what point can
we really be bigger than me do Coppa
mojo I was a terrible accent but we are
together aren’t we thank you very much [Applause]
