What if we cared more for sea turtles? | Ian Nash | TEDxYouth@Columbus

hello my name is Ian ash and this is my

TEDx talk so one day met the Columbus

Zoo watching a show and the lady

presenting comes out with a turtle who

is sick she explains how Turtles help

fish in the ecosystem so I came to think

about it and found a surprising amount

of information and now I’m here to

explain first thing I figured out is

that we’re killing them commercial

fishing overfishing pollution and

climate change from humans are reasons

why sea turtle population numbers are

dropping predators hunt hang turtle

hatchlings are also good reasons the

effects of dying sea turtles first

hawksbill sea turtles without them reefs

sponges would take over the space that

the coral reef needs to grow second

green sea turtles help the environment

by grazing seagrass beds which in turn

its food web so without green sea

turtles the ocean nutrients and and the

food well will be damaged and

decomposing spots for for viruses and

bacteria would soon appear killing

everything one of the things mainly

killing Cedros besides our own stuff our

predators how pretty there’s her Turtles

as they dig up nests and eat the eggs

and hatchlings sure things that do this

our animals like foxes Falcons and other

reptiles and to make matters worse

turtle hatchlings don’t have a way of

defending themselves this is a problem

because they the hatchlings won’t grow

up to help the ocean and now I will say

how we can save sea turtles have you

ever heard of Oceana they’re a group of

people who try their hardest to to

protect and restore Earth’s oceans and

guess what they help sea turtles so I

highly recommend you visit their website

and figure and learn how to help the

overfishing commercial fishing and

general fishing we can do this by making

sure there are no turtles in the way

during commercial fishing swimming

through a pond to see if there are

turtle nests or turtles nearby during

fishing and just don’t fish all the time

finally predators if we could keep two

turtle hatching nests away from

predators we can ensure their safety and

not to mention their safety once they

get in the water

things like sharks foxes and other thing

and other animals like to eat turtles

and enter legs so if and this is a big

if we can keep sea turtles away from

these animals we can and make sure they

can do their job to help the ocean we

can do this fun idea I had we could make

the screens on Fox traps higher so that

that they can’t jump into the nests and

eat the eggs I mean – and I hope that

though we can help turtles in the ocean with this tedxtalk
