What if school started later? | Daniel Van Bibber | TEDxYouth@Columbus

hello my name is Daniel van bibber and

I’m 11 years old I go to Columbus gifted

Academy do any of you have a hard time

getting up in the morning well I do and

every day I have to leave by seven fifty

to get to school my school starts at

nine my bus ride is an hour long so

that’s why I have to stand at that’s why

I have to go to school so early my old

school started at nine as well but it

was in a walkable distance so I could

leave at eight forty and still get the

wrong time but now I have to stand now I

have to go to school really early to get

to school on time however if me if my

school and maybe some other schools had

a later start time the problem be solved

there are many reasons supporting my

opinion first of all people are losing

sleep time according to the National

Sleep Foundation the average healthy

person needs 10 to 11 hours of sleep

however the average teenager only gets

about nine hours of sleep at night this

means they’re losing one to two hours of

sleep in that and a night and or about

270 hours a year on average also sleep

is very important it helps your brain

grow when you sleep your brain sleeps 2

and you would do better in school if

your brain recessed event if it wasn’t

even though I think we should have late

at school start times some people

disagree in winter the Sun sets earlier

than all the other seasons and if people

started school later people would get

home later oh but the bus stop can get

pretty far from someone’s house and this

might this means that might have to walk

in the dark and in some neighborhoods

that might not be very safe there are

many people who think we should have a

later school start time like me and

there are people who think we shouldn’t

this is a very controversial issue but I

still think we should have a later

school start time so people will do better in school thank you for your time
