although we can’t go back what if we
step back and look at life again through
the eyes of a child I was the youngest
in my family until age 12 when my sister
was born when my parents told me that I
was going to have a younger sibling I
didn’t like anything about it
my family was perfectly fine just the
way it was I remember thinking to myself
can we even afford this does this mean
fewer Christmas presents for me what is
he or she going to do all day after all
we are all very busy with our lives then
I thought ok well if there’s going to be
a new baby
I sure hope it’ll be a brother when my
baby’s sister was born all I kept
hearing was how much she looks like me
and how much she reminded our friends
and family of me when I was little at
first I didn’t know if I could really
see it or not but I have to say as time
went on I could see it I began to see
myself in her in so many ways little did
I realize how much I would learn about
myself in life through my new baby
sister Savannah being the older brother
I thought I would be the one teaching
her all the life lessons but she had
quite a few things to teach me watching
Savannah grow and her curiosity to
everything around her intrigued me she
never seemed bored everything was new
fun
funny and interesting she could sit for
hours just staring at our fish tank or
watching the wind blow the leaves and I
noticed sorry and I found myself
watching her I even noticed every time
she got up to go somewhere she would run
as fast as she could whether it was to
the bathroom from her beach chair to the
shore or to go outside and play it was
as though she did not want to miss a
second and no matter what she is doing
it is always filled with excitement she
is always in the present the simplest
things meant so much laughing at the way
she throws the ball when we play catch
and vice versa did you know that
children laugh around 500 times a day
but adults only laugh about
somewhere along the way we lose that
simple connection to seeing everything
as fun and positive and we become much
more serious however studies show that
we are happiest when we think like a kid
according to dr. Carlson an expert on
childhood brain development at the
University of Minnesota kids spend as
much as two-thirds of their time in non
reality and non-reality in imaginative
play Albert Einstein famously said to
stimulate creativity one must develop
the childhood inclination for play Pablo
Picasso said every child is an artist
the problem is how to maintain an artist
once we grow up children can show us a
lot about the joy of living and now I’m
going to share a few important things
that I’ve learned from my little sister
first of all my little sister has shown
me that we don’t always have to worry
about what other people think as adults
we often restrain ourselves from things
we truly like to do because we are
worried about how others will perceive
us children are free from this worry and
make their decisions solely on personal
enjoyment they freely ask hundreds of
questions without hesitation secondly my
sister has reminded me of the importance
of imagination whether she is fingered
whether she is completely messy from
finger painting or busy creating an
entire fairy garden she is blissfully
happy and all in with whatever she’s
doing as teenagers and adults we often
forget about the joy and believing and
the importance of creative play like
sitting on the beach building
sandcastles and discovering all the
amazing things around us whether
children are experiencing optimal
enjoyment by watching the ceiling fan go
round and round or banging on
instruments closely adults easily forget
that we were once captivated by the
simplicity in life while perceiving life
in this way it is sure to become less
stressful and rarely boring because of
Savannah my awareness has opened a wide
range of thoughts from enjoying the
simple things in life to thinking
outside of the box little did I know how
my sister’s birth would have positively
changed my life in so many ways I have
become much more compassionate and
and have really enjoyed caring for the
little things I encourage you to take
the time to spend with young children
simplify in such a fast-paced world
noting the importance of taking time to
do less stay present detached from
technology and see yourself as a child
again thank you [Applause]
