we’ve all been a preteen and I’m sure
we’ve all know what it’s like horrible
right I’m sure we’ve all experienced
feeling awkward nerdy or the horrible
stage of not knowing where to put your
hands Hey I have to admit I’m still all
that one pretty hardcore but between the
ages of 13 to 15
Iowa’s in a program called cyberpatriots
which is ran by the air force
cyberpatriots is a fun inclusive program
where students from different operating
systems on virtual machines and compete
to patch up those operating systems
here’s an example of the virtual machine
image cyberpatriots is designed to test
the students knowledge of cyber security
vulnerabilities it also – it also
supplies Internet discipline and strong
communication skills normally students
order pizzas on Saturdays when they
compete and have fun while learning
about cyber security but for me I didn’t
get that opportunity during Tuesday and
Thursday practices I was told not to
touch laptops instead of being a part of
like the quote from Ada Lovelace all I
wanted to do was understand I felt empty
joining a club that I Kane joined to
gain a head start into cybersecurity I
also felt empty because technology is a
love of my life most nights I came home
and cried I wanted to insert myself
learn grow and participate but I had no
idea how because I spent the last two
years sitting there and looking pretty
it wasn’t until I talked to my only
supportive teammate that I had Sam that
I decided that enough was enough I
forced myself so
my rebellious solution was to create my
own team the night before the next
competition season began I got a text
from my ex-boyfriend who was on my
previous team saying good luck trying to
find a team overnight watch me I sent a
text out to five girls and within 10
minutes they all responded with yes and
ten xmh marks they were so excited and I
was so ecstatic I made my own team
overnight the Dayton regional stem
schools first all-girls team Sam was
very proud of me and supported my
decision I finally stood up for myself
and four other girls my team has never
let me down and we always encourage each
other no one gets left out we learned
about cybersecurity and most of all we
have fun together last year the stress
of doing well on a competition season
was so high that I brought in face masks
for everyone and we normally order food
together and we run down the hallways
when we need to break but no matter what
we are always there for each other and
we always support each other I finally
according to I am cyber safes orgs 2017
report women only compose 11 percent of
the computer work force work worldwide
another source the National Center in
folman and information technology claims
that 18% of 2015 computer science and
information technology Bachelor degrees
were run by women and even worse only 3%
of the computing workforce were
african-american women in 2016 these
numbers have to change all of them but
how we are taught that computer science
is a masculine field boys are bought
cool tech things from an early age and
girls have bought Barbies and makeup
instead of giving girls dolls and makeup
we need to challenge a learning stigma
and buy them the tool of computer
knowledge if I were a little girl again
I would have thought coding gaming were
fun I would have not hesitated learning
about cyber sea
purity this is step 1 by encouraging
girls at a young age this keeps the
interest in computer science through
middle school and into high school and
into careers as an adult step 2 women
are brought up to go into traditionally
female dominated fields as a little girl
I thought Nursing is what I was supposed
to do because all my family members were
involved in the medical profession yes
those fields are important but when you
look at the computer science statistics
the numbers have to change we need to
teach young girls about powerful women
like Kalia brass well who’s in tech camp
for girls founder or Amy Chang who ran
Google Analytics why aren’t we
celebrating and devoting our time to put
young girls into programs where they are
encouraged the computer science
statistics will increase and will change
if there are more opportunities and more
outreach for young girls to become like
these powerful women
we need someone to help us and to
understand us we also need more outreach
programs like Sarah Patriots girls who
code and girl develop it to keep
encouraging young girls in computer
science and cybersecurity fields because
I persisted and I got tired of being
shut out I insisted on raising the 11% I
say to girls who are interested
computers provide leadership for
yourself make your own all-female tech
team like I did with cyber Patriots go
to a hackathon event like I have build
your own computer build a robot and even
take a coding class give each other
encouragement tell yourself that you can
do this because you can do anything the
11% must increase we’ve got this thank
you you
