okay so I studied loan politics and I’m
working in the cultural sector and I’ve
always had this question in my mind
whether which one is more powerful
culture or politics every nation has its
own power resources and you cannot rely
on one source of power to protect a
country countries in the third world
merely focus on developing the heart
power by which we mean using force of or
giving money for a persuasion but what
about the soft power what about the
ability to shape preferences of people
through attraction and appeal the
currency of hard power is military
economics and politics while the
currency of soft power is culture
foreign policies and political values so
a country is not only recognized by
border and a flag in the state a country
is recognized with this culture and
heritage as well I’m here to talk about
culture as a real Genie empower that
cannot be defeated when strengthened you
can protect your own identity you can
protect your people through culture and
if you don’t there is always another
country there that will invade you with
their culture and that’s when you lose
and buy them hard power won’t be able to
save you military won’t be able to save
you because the mind is invaded with
another culture back in 2006 when I
finished high school I’ve always wanted
to study arts or film but I never had
the chance in this city I had four
different options to study law and
politics and not a single option for
film or arts which was my desire so I
ended up forced into study
politics and I never liked it honestly
as soon as I started studying I couldn’t
wait to graduate and then work in the
culture assay and the cultural sector
straightaway right on the first stage I
found my way and I started working in a
TV channel and I spent four years like
this working in the morning and studying
politics in the evening and I remember I
did not even attend my graduation
ceremony because I was busy on a film
set soft power is strong you can really
change things through it
I felt very empty in this city I felt
empty in a city that had one or two
bookstores I felt empty in a city that
had no cinema hall I wanted to attend
the film screening with my family with
my friends but I didn’t have the chance
that’s why I felt this responsibility of
getting cultural sector because everyone
wanted to become a politician that time
you see I had four options to study down
politics and not a single option to
study film because everyone wanted to be
a political politician everyone thought
it’s cooler everyone thought it’s better
to be in suit and tie everyone was
talking politics the tea guy the taxi
driver the barber and I’m not sure
everyone was sure what they were exactly
talking about so my father always told
me about this how he was attending film
screenings and how these films that were
being screened on big screens became a
part of him and helped in building the
person he is today and back then they
had cinema halls and he was telling me
about all these stories and I grew up on
these imaginations not seeing any of
these and the reality and not
remembering I don’t know the first time
I think I attended the film screening I
was 24 years old
everything about culture came to extent
and instead of this becoming a starting
point to develop it
everything is extinct and people started
to migrate the country and the majority
of the people the creatives the artists
live in diaspora now of our artists and
I think that reason is obvious working
on the soft power here needs more
efforts sometimes the government or rich
people think of boosting the soft power
by opening through through media by
opening TV channels and the TV channels
in the end are all political or news
channels and when they open family
entertaining channels they’re screening
Korean Kurdish dubbed drama which is sad
it’s sad for the people who want to see
themselves on the screens who want to
see their culture and are unable and are
seeing Korean people dubbed in Kurdish
and not having another option for a real
geniune Kurdish drama let’s say or a
Kurdish film the strength of soft power
really lies and bringing people together
through foreign policies when politics
is tearing us apart
together instead of knowing this region
of a spot for a political conflict we
want them we want the people we want the
international people to know that this
region is known with a film festival but
they have a film festival and not a spot
for political conflicts and Wars and all
these sad things that are happening to
humanity now and this is why this
movement started here and we’re working
in this sector the cultural sector this
is why it’s very important for us to
have a film festival this is why it’s
very important for us to have Kurdish
films Kurdish drama so we have options
to see ourselves first before we see
foreign things otherwise we are totally
invaded with foreign forces and not
necessarily with military but through
their culture and right here right now
it’s very important for our nation to
work on boosting the soft power because
we are on the gates of becoming a
country we demand the country therefore
we want to solve for this country and
the soul is in the culture and heritage
of this country not everything is about
politics and economics and the victory
this is why if hard power is the body
soft power is the soul and the soul
remains when the body is gone thank you
very much
