Visual Metaphors and Its Collaborations | Ade Olufeko | TEDxIkeja

I so what it does Oh home is a circle
and a circle could be used as a metaphor
for many different things I’m standing
in a circle our eyes are round oval I’m
out our circles as well the earth is a
circle though some scientists would say
there is a bulge there is a bulge
actually it’s just that what we’ve been
taught in school it’s round
how do we make a difference how do we
make a difference in a country like
Nigeria a place like Liga’s a melting
pot we have things we call unconscious
biases where we take into our
engagements in business in education and
many things so this what I’m
highlighting here really is how do we
break those cultural barriers and we do
this true understanding what their
metaphors are the common factors we all
have and what collaborations mean like
the young lady and the gentleman before
me said what are the real collaborations
and what are metaphors what are those
what are what are metaphors metaphors
could be something that means something
else
something you need to convey say you
have a business in leg us now you went
into an engagement they say where’s he
from he’s evil I can’t do business with
evil hear about eyes not my place and
then you wonder why they’re stagnancy
in the country there are these biases
that people don’t even know they go to
church on Sunday clap their hands and on
Monday oh yeah
where’s he from so visual metaphors man
the creator curator Adam Ola came up
with this topic to try to address some
certain things when you go out you start
your day try to suspend those
confirmation or unconscious biases you
have you guys can google it
things are real and in Nigeria night
with Nigerians were very very proud
confident individuals right yes yes
exactly
another speaker said that we do dominate
Western universities
statistics show that we do next to the
Asians then we have Nigerians Nigella
Takei last I be your the Kyla’s another
Kyla’s Asians Nigerians and then the
white Caucasians it’s amazing and the
media paints paints all these weird
images of what we do the bad things we
do a lot of great things and the world
is going to see that we do a lot of
amazing things in the world is going to
see that but we have to start here from
home right now we have a steady diet of
important Western constructs and
abandoning what we have our indigenous
abilities what the 80s were like what
our parents stood for the things that
the values they passed down that’s
another part I would like to discuss
shared values in real collaboration
collaborations aren’t about what you can
get from the next person oh yeah let’s
collaborate I guess some small change
from this guy who you know no no no
it comes with shared values moving
forward
understanding that there’s an end goal
of adding value back human capital
within the country within the world
within the continent that’s a real
collaboration not what you can get from
the next person I still have a little
bit time okay
so tying both of them together Marion
metaphors or visual metaphors and
collaborations one perceives or other
how do you suspend this thing that
separates us true be told we all have
fares we all have emotions we all have
things that we all share
it’s just when we leave the house in the
morning
we have this okay I’m this person I’m in
this class system I’m in that class
system and it stagnancy starts to build
in stagnancy starts to build in so
looking at visual metaphors and
collaborations try to take that with
data real data try to take it to your
workplaces try to take to your families
when you’re talking to your children
when you’re talking to your parents take
some of that nigel confident all your
engagements here or in the diasporas and
move things forward don’t wait for the
government the government is good
actually have some friends in government
but I’m a private sector individual and
I see some of the things that they’re
doing but just try to move on your own
if you’re at this party or that party it
doesn’t matter just move forward
I generally carry last alone Abey Abey
uh-huh okay one of the reasons we decide
to pick visual metaphors is my fieldwork
I’ll talk a little bit over myself if
I’m allowed to do so I spent the last
ten years working in different US cities
working with different creative
professionals artists artists usually
are creative and don’t usually follow
the conventional framework the framework
of what success means in Nigeria we have
a lot of creative people and I believe
some of the work I have done working
with different organizations can be
replicated here in Nigeria like the
project for the girl child that’s one
initiative there’s so many initiatives
out there I can say and this is the
typical night you’re in mindset and he’s
doing something it’s all gonna do my own
now there frameworks that you can plug
what ideas you have into the next person
the next person’s idea and this where
free enterprise comes in there’s a
little bit of capitalism to and move
forward move forward if you want to see
real change real change any guys who do
this in
in the girl-child one invest in women –
we live in a very patriarchal society
patriarchy the male the male is a
dominant figure yes we still respect the
male I’m a male but invest in those two
and then also invest in the have-nots
not to have the house are gonna be okay
it’s a synergy between both of them once
you invest in those those three sections
you see a real change in the private
sector and then the government will say
ah now this would they’re not waiting
for us and that’s real innovation when
things start to move it will move Stoke
so quickly and then regulators will jump
and start regulating veins
this happens in finance this happens in
education this happens in health care
and all those now these are social
issues I’m touching on as well all those
things where people have to raise funds
to send somebody to India to get this
Tramp up transplant once we start when
you start seeing real change the younger
folks the people who are able who are
fearless we’re then starts to push push
the old heads out of the way and say
this is how it’s done
do not bastard sigh the child who shows
things that are a little bit different
encourage them you know we live in a
society where the village raises to the
child so don’t worry about in your body
so my or my yahwah the president don’t
miss rude you know don’t don’t worry
about that just encourage the stains and
young people and watch Maplin real magic
magic based on practicality practicality
collaboration synergy and metaphors thank you
