you know okay so imagine this you were
chained up in a cave with a group of
prisoners since birth
the MEC hands and legs you’re unable to
turn around your backs are towards the
entrance and you’re facing a stone wall
you have no knowledge of the outside
world but every once in a while people
and up the and objects have their
shadows cast it on the wall so
eventually you and the group of
prisoners perceive these shadows as
actual objects and later on you start
naming those objects by what you hear
from echoes so unexpectedly you were
released and got out into what we call
the real world of course your eyes were
not adjusted for the first couple of
days because of the sunlight and the
cave was dark so it took you a couple of
days to adjust and when you did you
realize that these shadows are not
actual objects they’re actually just
mere reflections of it so after you make
these this experience you start to
realize that there’s more to life than
what was in the cave that everything you
thought you knew was not what it really
was
so you rushed back into the cave and try
to tell the other prisoners about what
you’ve experienced you try to tell them
that shadows are not the actual objects
but just reflections of it but they
don’t believe you
so you try to prove it to them you start
naming each shadow you try to name these
shadows and tell them the physical
descriptions about how they actually
look like but your eyes are no longer
adjusted to the darkness of the cave so
you get them all wrong and because of
that the prisoners start to think that
your escape ruined your vision and made
you senseless and stupid so even when
you try to unchain them they resisted
violently now believe it or not we could
relate the story to the modern world
that we live in this is a rather popular
story that Plato
lucifer who wrote the allegory of the
cave was wrote and the message that i’m
about to say is similar to the message
that he was trying to convey this story
shows that because people fear the
unknown they tend to argue against it so
when they do when we come face-to-face
with these ideas we tend to get
defensive and put them down because we
don’t want to change the way that we
perceive reality it’s just human nature
but and then an unknown example of this
is Galileo Galilei of the scientists who
proved Copernicus his theory that the
solar system is heliocentric and even
though Copernicus was called crazy for
proposing this idea Galileo still had
the courage to go up against society and
prove them all wrong and he did but he
was put in prison for a life sentence
and 350 years later was the only time
that society and scientists accepted his
idea so even though Canada okay the
tough price for proposing and and the
showing his studies about how the solar
system is healing center if it weren’t
for him we wouldn’t have known that the
solar system is heliocentric for all we
know it could still be studying that
earth is the center of universe of the
universe so like Galileo many of us have
ideas that are new and innovative to the
society but we discard them because we
fear that they would be resisted
violently but why would you even be
resistant society is not at fault for
having the subconscious bias against
creativity it’s the uncertainty that
comes with it that builds this
resistance towards it because we usually
don’t think that these things are
logical so because of that society
starts to put people down and in turn
people start putting themselves
– because when we keep being fed with
the same lies over and over and over
again we slowly start believing them
I’ll give you an example of this to help
you better understand the concept about
someone who’s so close to me my twin
sister so I’m gonna start off by saying
that this girl is incredible she’s smart
funny outgoing but she wasn’t this
person for a very long time because a
lot of people around her kept putting
her down they kept telling her that she
could never be as smart scolded her for
continuously losing concentration or
forgetting the things that she was
supposed to do they defined her by her
mistakes and because of that she
couldn’t help it
she believed them because she thought
that because everyone’s telling me the
same thing then it must be true so and
so she was just this insecure person
until one day someone came up to her and
told her that the only person holding
him back is yourself because even though
these people are trying to put you down
you’re the one who left them today she’s
one of the most dedicated people I know
she’s the smartest students and her one
of the smartest students in her class
and she’s always out and about overall
just have for you so society can’t have
an effect on you unless you let it don’t
let society slow down your progress
think of it as you’ve come too far to
give in to what they want now society
doesn’t only stop new and innovative
ideas because of uncertainty like I
mentioned before but it’s also because
if you succeed it means they have failed
if you succeed they will no longer have
the spotlight and you’ll have that
instead and let’s face it no one wants
to be backstage so now if you have this
fear of going against society it’s
probably because of this reason or it’s
probably one of the reasons why we don’t
have a place we feel comfortable in it
could be our house
doesn’t look like that or a coffee shop
or a couch either way you’re comfortable
in this place we’ve created this comfort
zone around us where everything is
comfortable and familiar who would want
to get out of that and in some cases
this comfort zone that you have is a
good thing that could help you
concentrate and whatnot but in most
cases and more often than not it keeps
you stuck in a loop and honestly I see
this everywhere people are so afraid of
going abroad to university this is like
something that’s happening nowadays in
my age so because a lot of people have
been born and raised in the same country
so they don’t want to get out they don’t
want to experience anything new why
because they’re comfortable they know
how everything goes everything’s
familiar they don’t want to leave people
stuck in toxic relationships for years
and they don’t know who they are without
it in their lives anymore because they
lost themselves in the pain so they’re
comfortable they don’t want to get out
of it these situations are examples of
people whose minds and bodies are stuck
because even if it kills them they’d
rather be they’d rather be comfortable
with what they know then exploring the
things that they don’t know so so but
the only way that we could live up to
our potential is so that we could learn
to be comfortable being uncomfortable
Les Brown once said that the graveyard
is the richest place on earth because it
is here that you’ll find all the hopes
and dreams that were never fulfilled the
books that were never written the songs
that were never song the inventions that
were never shared the cures that were
never discovered all because someone was
too afraid to take that first step keep
with the problem or determined to carry
out
everyone in this room has the ability to
bring something new and innovative into
society and for those of you who don’t
know what that is yet don’t be afraid to
go and try and find it for those of you
who do have a goal that you want to
accomplish don’t stop because your
friends mentors or even parents say that
you won’t work listen to them if they
say you need a plan B but go after what
you believe them be the person you wish
you want to be don’t let these ideas go
to the grave with you because if not you
who it’s not now Wow
thank you [Applause]
