Turning The Page: Leaving Satisfaction | Erin Ferarri | TEDxBaldwinHighSchool

it wasn’t too long ago that I fell

victim to an enormous amount of

overbearing stress I mean don’t we all

at some point my stress derived from

being a three-sport athlete a part of

six different teams doing multiple

activities not getting enough sleep not

eating right maintaining a 4.2 GPA and I

was doing what every other high school

senior does I was writing what seems

like no not what seems like what was a

thousand college and scholarship essays

in during this period of stress I just

kept telling myself I was like Aaron

that this isn’t going to last forever

just write your paper and go to bed like

it’ll all go away sometime but one day I

got tired of waiting for it all to

disappear I decided that I was going to

become proactive and make it disappear

myself it was at that very moment I

decided to leave my satisfaction being

the awesome AP calc student that I am I

came up with my very own formula to

change myself and I did this in hopes to

find a newer and better satisfaction but

first what do I mean when I say leaving

my satisfaction isn’t the main goal in

life to try and attain it so why would I

want to leave it well the answer is

simple I found that I was forcing myself

into being satisfied with the things in

my life because being seventeen

didn’t think that I could change them I

was growing away from the things that

used to bring me joy and I was in denial

about it I didn’t want to accept the

fact that I wasn’t meant to play sports

for the rest of my life I had the desire

to be something more to be something

better but I couldn’t do this without

accepting that there were things holding

me back and even though I wanted to play

sports forever and I never want to leave

this high school that I love when I was

going through this I realized that just

because I won’t be doing something every

single day of my life anymore

doesn’t make me love it any less and

just because I won’t be coming to this

building anymore

doesn’t make me love it any less you can

still love something if you don’t do it

every single day and if it doesn’t bring

you joy every single second and that

leads me to the first part of my formula

I subtracted from my life the things

that were holding me back whenever you

want to change yourself you have to let

go when we talk about new beginnings

people often don’t realize that new

beginnings are another beginnings end

and though it breaks my heart that I’m

sort of leaving my current life and that

I may not talk to some people ever again

after high school but it was the right

thing to do because in order to be that

person that I want to be I had to let

some things go I then came up with the

second part of my equation I had to

replace the things that I let go and

when I was going through this stressful

dilemma pun intended

I realized that all it takes to change

yourself is not a vision or a plan

because I certainly do not have a plan

or goal all it takes is adding new

things to your life when you experience

things out of your habit you gain new

perspectives which can often lead to

different outlooks on life the world is

so big that humans we are often so naive

because we don’t go out and experience

it it’s because we are so obsessed with

this thing we call our comfort zone you

cannot just exist in this world you have

to live in it somehow and if you want to

live in it you have to get out of your

comfort zone and you have to leave your

satisfaction

nothing ever great happens when we’re in

here so why are we all still living in

it my message may be cliche but you only

have one life go after change and

embrace it take the leap of faith you

don’t need a destination or plan or any

of that stuff to get on your way you

have to understand that there may be an

overrated sense of satisfaction in your

life and you have to be willing to let

go and try new things

you are given two options in this world

you can stay or you can leave you can

stay in your comfort zone forever and

you’ll be safe here

you can stay in it forever and you can

watch as everybody goes around you as

they start getting on their way or you

can leave you can follow what may be the

simplest formula ever created by a

17-year old and you can leave your

comfort zone and you can leave your

satisfaction so make the right choice thank you
