Turning receipts into cash | Reynazran Royono | TEDxBatangArau

don’t be scared there’s a tsunami coming
and is coming faster okay now this one
the tsunami is unstoppable we cannot
prevent it and the volume of this Nami
is huge and is coming all over the world
and that tsunami is called theta now in
this era is actually becoming important
for us to ensure that we have enough
capacity to import and put all of this
data into the machine that we’re going
to process insights from this data and
align the speed of the incoming data is
going to be much faster than the speed
to process the data storage is becoming
more important the machine learning
algorithms that we’re creating is going
to be important and we also need to make
sure that we have capabilities in place
to process this deal in the next five
years one third of the electricity in
the world is going to be used to process
dinner now this is a good thing because
if you look at how incoming data is
becoming more important we also
understand that there’s a lot of new
topics coming in new capabilities that
we need to provide and one of them is
artificial intelligence because with
artificial intelligence you cannot
create this sector this is artificial
intelligence capability without cleaner
once we have the data we have a set of
data training that we can use to develop
the artificial intelligence that we need
to automate a lot of interesting things
one of them is how we can actually do
real-time decision making from the data
that we collect how are we able to
actually automate things that are quite
cumbersome and is something that is more
operational and automated to our benefit
so the tsunami is actually a good thing
the question is how can we leverage the
tsunami these are companies that are
well known to be in the elite group of
companies that are able to leverage data
effectively these are the so-called
winners in their industries these are
the so called disruptors in their
industrious Amazon who were they are the
unicorns or the bigger corns of the
world because they are able to leverage
the data that we collect from their
users and then enable that to their
benefit into their business and that is
why they are winning in the industries
and these are companies are founded not
more than 10 years
aside from Amazon of course but uber has
only been operational for five six but
they are right now winning and
disrupting the industry so these are the
facts that we know about data but then I
want to leap to realize I want you to
realize that we actually have an issue
related to data collection so right now
on a daily basis we are generating 2.5
quintillion bytes of data now the
problem is the data that we collect so
far are actually coming from online but
it’s not from the offline activities and
this is a concerning thing and you need
to realize it this is intentional
why because 99% of activities is
happening of why yes
it is something that is quite ironic
because if we are doing a lot of
activities in the offline life channels
but then those activities are not
recorded effectively that means that all
of the data that we collect only
contribute 1 percent of the total
activities that we do on a daily
business so let me share with you why
this is happening and coming from a
consumer goods practitioner I used to
work for a company for nine years
there is working in the industry called
punishment business so the manufacturers
of products the products that they use
that you use on a daily basis so let’s
call the manufacturers the brands so
they tend to distribute their products
to retailers so these are intermediaries
at the same time they also need to build
awareness of their products using media
channels so media channels could be
television radio it could also be
digital ads through Facebook and Google
search now with that in mind that means
that there is no direct interaction
between the brands and the shoppers or
the consumers so the brand’s don’t know
what’s going on with the shoppers and
consumers they are blind line and to
make things worse they tend to rely
heavily on data coming from incumbent
market research agencies where if you
look at the way they collect data is
very outdated they would go to the
houses and do face to face interviews
they would go on site and check were
things on physical environment and that
makes the data too late to be dispersed
too late to be shared hence the data is
too late to know and imagine all of this
manual interventions that the market
research is its due will create
inaccuracy of the offline data being
now what’s important to know is there’s
a lot of information out there
concerning of Aida and one of the
ingredient that we can actually tap into
would be the so called proof of
transaction proceeds through blender
right and this is important why because
we as shoppers and consumers then just
to throw the receipt in trash cans yes
but then for the premise they’ve seen
seeds as a goldmine it is important to
actually see what is printed on the
receipt because if you profile it
correctly if you develop a machine
learning algorithm to understand what is
being bought from the receipts and over
time you would know where the behavior
and profile of the users who are
purchasing the products you would even
understand in the household so for
example if your housewife and you buy
also for your husband for your kids and
on the receipt you would buy me me baby
diapers men’s grooming products and so
on then you can actually profile the
household from the receipt items as well
right so this gold mine is right now in
cash cans and that’s the fact
now what’s important is to note that we
sit is just one way for you to track a
fine dinner and there’s a lot of
innovations that we can actually create
by looking into the fundamental of
offline purchases and given I’m pretty
sure there are other means for you to
actually extract information related to
a flying dealer and offline activities
now there are companies out there there
are already starting this and one of the
company is called slap word which I
founded three years ago so what we do is
to actually create an app for people to
download for free whether it is in hack
store or iOS app or app in store as well
but then what we’re asking the users and
shoppers to do is to take pictures of
the receipts before they throw it away
and in return you would get that money
but of course on the background what
we’re doing is we extract data from the
receipts so then we’re able to share
information that we gather from the
receipts collected by our users and then
sell that data to brands and when I say
brands there are actually hundreds of
brands who would want that data that we
collect from reasons so that’s basically
the concept of our first app which is
called snap cotton now there’s a second
app why is instant interesting because
if you are in a manager then you notice
that more than 65% of the trade consists
of stores who do not even have cash
registers this is the so called waddles
right if you go to the Phillipines is
called sari-sari stores now what’s
interesting is you wouldn’t be able to
get any offline data from receipts
because they don’t even produce receipts
so then the question is how can we also
track transactions happening in these
stores who do not have cash registers so
after our second app which is called the
sheriff so what cashier does is to
provide a free point-of-sale system to
store owners who own smartphones so
basically it helps store owners to track
transactions in their stores providing
reports force orders to better manage
their stores and then also provide
incentives to store owners that can
provide information back to the practice
so imagine that you’re getting a
point-of-sale system for free and you
also get paid for it but in return what
we got is information related to
transactions offline transactions
happening in these stores that do not
have cash registers and with this we
basically covered 100% of what’s going
on in the market looking into offline
transactions and you might not know this
snap card as a company is right now
operating in 4 countries Indonesia
Philippines Singapore and Brazil and it
is one of the pioneers in getting
offline data from the Puffin activities
that right now is not being tracked so I
challenge you to start thinking on ways
to get data from offline activities
because it’s up to you whether you want
to be part of that few people that is by
now cracking a very hard problem to
crack and it’s not easy but the harder
it gets the harder for your competition
to copy what you’re doing right and it
is up to you on whether you can actually
convert something that you throw in the
trash into cash
