Turning an Idea into Reality | Davian Watson | TEDxJWUNorthMiami

so one day you’re walking down the
street and you see a person walking the
dog and then that idea strikes you I
should create an automatic dog feeder
that both watches and feed your dog I
mean it’s a great idea right so you go
home and like usual you start scrolling
through your newsfeed on Facebook the
days pass you by and you start
procrastinating over and over again
about that idea oh maybe it’s not good
enough for I mean who by an automatic
dog feeder anyway so you just set that
an idea off to the side you’re going
well one day I’ll create an idea that’s
that million-dollar idea this one’s not
even worth it so another day goes by and
you go back home and you’re on YouTube
or Facebook or you’re just watching TV
and then you see it that automatic dog
feeder for three easy payments of 1995
Wow that was my idea that was my dog
feeder that I said that I was going to
have that I was going to create so how
many of you all have ever had an amazing
idea how many of you are have seen that
idea stolen right from inside your head
it was almost like they were watching
you I know I have now how many of you
guys have had an idea you’ve written it
down or something but you don’t know
exactly what steps you should take next
I have a book of them so where do you
start the first place that you want to
start is do you have a hobby what do you
enjoy doing
do you have an occupation like what is
it that you do and if you love what
you’re already doing just go and own it
and I mean taken your the idea that you
already have
putting it to use or something that you
really love some objects or anything
that’s super creative you know take that
and then put your own twist to it
I know several people who have had ideas
and have had like for instance granola
bars or something like that they
actually took those granola bars to the
farmers market and is actually turning
that into their own business so we’ve
found something that we want to start on
so the next step let’s start making some
smart goals SMART goals means that
they’re specific they’re measurable
attainable they’re relevant so as it has
something to do with that specific idea
and it’s pertaining to and then they’re
time sensitive so one thing that I know
that I’ve struggled with is when I set a
goal it’s hard for me to create a day so
I found a template that I’ve actually
used that’s actually proven to work
because I’ve had an idea and I wrote it
down and then I went with it
because did you all know that people who
write their goals down put a date on it
or basically make SMART goals are they
make ten times more than people who just
have an idea or they have a goal so
that’s very important so the next thing
that you want to do is you want to make
a commitment to yourself you want to
make that commitment and you want to
stay consistent on that goal that you
have created I found that working with a
goal that has a three month interval
seems to be the most sufficient another
thing that you want to do is you want to
[Music]
find an accountability partner so find
someone who you trust with your idea but
also they have goals and aspirations as
well those people are the best people
who can keep you on track to making your
dreams and for them making their dreams
come true as well
and of course immerse yourself in the
project I know when I first started
school I was a culinary student so I ate
slept and breathed nothing but culinary
arts and that eventually led me down the
path that I’m going down now just
because I’ve immersed myself in the
culture and of course you want to sign
and date it at the bottom it tells you
you make this commitment to yourself
it’s basically signing the contract but
it’s only in between yourself you know
and also it has some things that you
would actually do every day in order to
keep on track to your goals so yours
being consistent so of course immerse
yourself in the idea and by a planner
keep track of your progress that’s the
best thing that you can do I’ve only
been doing this for six months and I
have two planners now because I like to
go on that three-month interval and I
have a planner that actually goes in
that three-month interval and what if
you don’t have any money that’s one
question that I always get it’s like how
do I start an idea but I don’t have any
money I I’m a college student and I
don’t have any money so one thing that
you want to do you want to use the
resources that you have that’s one thing
that we always take for granted is what
we already have that’s in front of us
that’s the best way that you can do it
or you could volunteer with other
organizations because sometimes other
organizations they want to help somebody
grow or they have plenty of resources to
spare so it’s not something that you
would overthink about they just be like
oh yeah you just want to use some
granola I mean not plenty and I was just
gonna throw it away after the event you
know so if you’ve already started on
your idea where do you go next Network
tell people what you’re doing because
nine times out of ten there’s going to
be somebody who’s doing something
similar and they’ll have valuable
insight for you make your goals bigger
but also manageable
so that if you’re already taking
consistent steps and you’re creating
goals that are just a little bit more
beyond your reach but they have that
time step on it you’re able to go and
obtain them and break down your barriers
and your inhibitions some people say
what if people tell me no what if I get
rejected it’s not really about if other
people tell you no it’s about you
telling other people no because far more
times I have turned down an opportunity
as opposed to actually taking an
opportunity and then I’m like well why
can’t I do this or that’s so cool I wish
I could be able to do this but it was
simply because I wasn’t the one who took
the opportunity I was walking around
with my hands closed and my eyes closed
versus being open to other opportunities
you should of course work smarter and
not harder that’s one thing that we tend
to think is we think that if we work
hard on a project we’ll really you know
if I work hard on my test I’ll get an A
but it’s like did I really take the time
to study out of it or am I just racking
my brain right now
you know when you’re working on a
project it’s better if you are more
strategic with how you’re doing things
so you’re aiming for the best results as
opposed to aiming for just that sweat
equity like I put a lot of time into
this but is it really working is the the
real question so one of the last things
is that being different it feels odd you
know it’s lonely on the road less travel
but you’re not alone there are other
people who are doing what you’re doing
so keep keep it up and if you’re
immersing yourself in the culture of an
idea or a project or an organization you
will find other people who do the same
thing that you do and share that same
type of passion other people like find
your teachers and your family or friends
and find a mentor who is able to mentor
you and the same type of activities that
you’re doing and think back to that
first commitment that you made that’s
another big part about it you know we so
often we get caught up and
all the day-to-day life and all of the
dramas that happen at work or at school
or something like that but you don’t
think about that first commitment that
you initially made to yourself and
lastly if it was easy wouldn’t everybody
be doing it I get that a lot
but I’d like to make a correction of
that because I don’t really think that’s
the way it is if you work smarter and
not harder
I think that no one is doing it so while
no one’s looking
take your shot even if you fail you’re
surprised and amazed people every time
thank you
