Transforming lives with vegan family business | Carnell Willoughby | TEDxKingLincolnBronzeville

peace everybody we have created
man in the best of moods at 10:00
for the Holy Koran ooh me had the
incredible ability to transfer her the
best of her energy under the most trying
circumstances and Abu was the epitome of
charm hustle and magnetism they both
were very very very tenacious and they
approach to life love and family I come
from really dope dope dope
genetics y’all I really do
Abu means father in Arabic and Umi means
mother in Arabic Oh me Margaret
Betsy penny Brown Willoughby was the
eldest of 12 she was a matriarch from
the start she knew exactly how to take
care of a family before she had a family
of her own that she birthed and that
boom he was a filly born roughest nails
middle child he was a lovable rebel I
come from one of eight third-youngest
I’m one of the top three with a really
really shy smile on its face so Umi was
incredible on how she brought creativity
to our household from the way that we
spelled our last name it’s three
syllables ten letters
WI ll Oh ugh should be why it’s it’s
something that I took on to help my
granddaughter spell our last name and it
worked at boo because he had so many
mouths to feed
he of course he was a hustler
he was a subcontractor but he also
hustled underworld coming from that
those rough circumstances in
Philadelphia I blew up in what they
consider to be a housing project which
was my village and it was a village in
the truest sense of the word I felt
loved I feel protected but from the
purview of outsiders it looked to be
among the most dangerous place that
they’ve ever stepped a foot in in
Atlantic City New Jersey
Pitney village is what it was called it
no longer exists because it’s a it’s a
parking lot for one of trumps properties
or something it goes to show that home
is a settlement of our souls it’s not
always Geographic it’s not always your
birthplace it’s the way that community
connects Columbus Ohio we made a
transition to Columbus Ohio and it
wasn’t a great transition it was trauma
in in abuse in that transition Columbus
was supposed to be our mecca but it was
none of that it was very foreign to me
it was segregated it didn’t have a sense
of community for us but arts the art
that I immerse myself in was hip-hop
music and I was introduced to music
itself from our eldest brother it does
Salaam severe percussionist trombonist
and he was a DJ as well I wouldn’t know
hip-hop music if it wasn’t for him big
up to my eldest brother my brother
Kenyatta and I formed the group called
the cool rockin MCS Kenyatta was cool
yeah Dee he changes his name later I’ll
tell you what that is it’s funny
and I was MC now necessary essentials
for long living which had to be
shortened because it was way too long we
rock like that floor for some time we
engaged ourselves in all things hip-hop
all the pillars of hip-hop from
breakdancing DJing graft work of course
we landed at emceeing because we can
connect well with people that
transference of energy is something kind
of wonderful y’all we formed a group
called spirit soldiers poised infinitely
reinforced and truth which is an acronym
and the name that we’re still trying to
live up to and I believe that it’s gonna
take a lifetime for us to do that it was
six of us we were dynamic it was
something kind of wonderful y’all I’m a
name those group members my baby brother
Malik a Willoughby known as balanced our
brother Kenyatta
Domingo Willoughby turned as he changed
his name to creamy dark and if anyone
knows Kenyatta y’all probably know why
he’s smooth he is so smooth there’s
another young man by the name of Landon
lomachenko we called him mu or mu daddy
depending on who was calling his name I
Lawrence Callaway was raised
rambunctious he’s the young man of the
group rahmel Hinkel was MC mel and of
course there was me i shortened my name
to necessary so m seen was a beautiful
thing i loved it i engage the crowd call
a response i can give you an example by
the way are you all ready for this those
in the crowd that know please follow me
I swear let’s make it complete this year
incorporate eliminate
incorporate love eliminate fear
incorporate eliminate incorporate
eliminate I want to hip-hop survivalist
arriving on my planet giving sight to
those who take it for granted
suspended for quite some time finally
landed I wind the half-mast ones had
third I expanded without my glorious
past I ceased to exist hits past at last
sex helper held once and often often
loved it
I loved hip-hop music literally totally
immersed in hip-hop music but there was
a call as another call and it was the
underworld I also loved and was
attracted to selling crack cocaine
carrying pistols and the energy that
came along with it and that was a
downfall I landed in the penitentiary in
1988 in Atlantic City New Jersey I was
facing probably a considerable amount of
time it gave me a little bit of time to
reflect but because I was a first
offender they had what they called some
flex parole stuff so I got out and it
was nothing more than them stacking the
deck to make sure that I will come right
back and I try for good Wow to be to be
good my mother called me back to
Columbus Ohio I came back here it was
the peak of the crack era and I
literally tried to had two and a half
jobs I was hustling y’all I was like I’m
legitimate baby the young man came to me
and said I need help I said I’m on
parole
I don’t think I can help you man he said
I got this amount of work you know had
this amount of money and it will take
this amount of time yeah that sounds
reasonable let’s take this time to do
that
second estate I got my second number two
years later right here in Columbus Ohio
sent me to the penitentiary which gave
me a whole lot of time to reflect on my
destruction of my community and also
reflect on the direction of my life
where would I go what would I do
how will I access knowing that I had two
felonies under my belt it was gonna be
hard for me to get a position anywhere
I’ll go back to Atlantic City because I
have to serve out the rest of my parole
time in our land a job at Trump castle
Jane Trump Trump wasn’t for ex-offenders
he was for tax break
so I was a number again I fell in love
with hospitality because I think we are
serviced by nature our human nature is
to serve we are made in the best of
modes that creator is the best of
servers so I get a little bit of that
and I get an opportunity to serve I fell
in love with it our neighbor her father
Frank Alan Hinkle we affectionately
called him Papa Doc Papa Doc helped us
to critically think about our life steps
and also he introduced us to a
plant-based diet and we’re talking about
the early 90s where you will go to a
restaurant and all they had was
Portobello caps and maybe some twigs for
you to eat it was very few it was it was
limited but he said spare no expense for
your health because when all else Phelps
and you have your health in all aspects
your mental health your physical health
and your spiritual health
whatever you lose you can get all back
so spare no expense for that and he says
make sure that you putting the best of
what the Creator has given you into your
body
so your best approach for that as a
plant-based diet so why not I became a
vegetarian early 90s pick up Frank Allen
Hinkle he set the course for something
which brings me to my aunt Ivy Brown we
call her aunt butter butter was was very
intentional about how she cooked food
she had a process
she took a time she was very intimate
with food she got that directly from my
grandmother who would often tell me your
spirit has to be in a certain place
before you even pick up a knife to cut
anything before you put anything into a
pot so your spirit if it’s not balanced
to calibrate it you better pull back and
get it together because most often when
you’re cooking you’re cooking for
someone else so you have to make sure
you inject love into what you are
cooking I don’t care what it is if
you’re cooking the best of what the
Creator gives you all the worse love has
to be the first ingredient speaking of
ingredients y’all my first few words
came from the create the the Quran so we
have to have a huge dose of God in us
that’s the that’s our first recipe
that’s first first line item on our
recipe the next thing will be our
foundation where we get our influences
from the next will be of course our
community and our family
next will be of course we have more
influence so order to execute a dish you
take the best and sometimes the worst of
your ingredients is and your your
greatest intention so that you can
create
something to transform yourself that
transformation happened what will it be
sold veg will it be so veg was not my
vision y’all
it was Malik a Willoughby the super
genius is busy he woke up four o’clock
one morning he said hey yo I had a dream
we had will abuse oil vapors is all
vegan he said is the copy out the first
menu alignment has to be curry cabbage
okay let’s talk about it I see it now
it’s the willow trees and it you know he
got very detailed in it so he said I’m
gonna charge you with this vision you
got a poor love into the food you have
to affect the community in a different
way you know exactly how to destroy a
community now know how to reconstruct it
so this creation has to make for better
transformation of yourself and what you
put into the world god bless my brother
Malik a Willoughby but it didn’t happen
without a push the push came from sherry
Jane ill my girlfriend if I didn’t have
that push more than likely it will be a
concept that we would sit on it and just
think about and talk about the
Willoughby’s is in existence is a part
of that creative transformation and it’s
much bigger than the Willoughby family
I’ve been able to wrap my arms around a
community with food an area that’s
underserved three conditions plagued
this particular area diabetes
hypertension heart disease and that’s
what I want to tackle it’s going to be a
hard tackle and I never played football
yard and I probably won’t
but I’m up for the challenge I want to
continue to transfer transform this is
the manifestation of that transformation
it’s our pop-up location on 17th and
Mount Vernon which again is bigger than
us it’s three brothers those two other
brothers that sitting there my younger
brothers we are the legacy of Willoughby
Sol veg but it’s much bigger than us we
want to impart that legacy on to the
community we want to continue to create
to transform my question to most in all
of you in here what are you going to
create to transform peace [Applause]
