We are all gonna die!
[Applause]
Surely you agree with this statement.
Nevertheless,
We live as if death only affects others.
And despite this,
dying is an unquestionable fact
and impossible to avoid.
It is nothing new.
In the ancient wisdom traditions,
four centuries before Christ,
There was already a book, “The Mahabharata”,
in which they talked about those characteristics.
The king in that book asked the wise man:
“Of all the facts of life, which is the most surprising?”
And the wise man answered:
“That a man,
watching as everyone else dies around him,
never think he’s going to die. “
Do not recognize our mortality
it is something that is the order of the day.
And it has various reasons to make it so.
On the one hand, people,
we all have a deep feeling
that life is not something that ends,
that life has a continuity.
In reality,
what dies with what we call “our death”
It is a biography.
He dies, a story ends.
My own story!
But, beyond that,
Life has no end.
On the other hand,
there are existential issues,
that throughout our life have no answer.
Deeply, we have the sensation, the longing,
that something is beyond us.
And so, dying,
which is something that we avoid in our society,
for many reasons,
It turns out that we leave it for others.
And we do not allow ourselves to talk about it, or approach it,
nor learn from everything that dying teaches us to live.
We always consider
that death is something that is beyond a border,
What is in the future?
Actually, everything that dies,
is what has already happened,
which is what we usually call life.
Just life is, what is to be done.
Creativity, living the present.
That is what allows us to build the future that we do not know.
In order to live what we call “Life”
Live it fully,
you have to die at every moment.
Taking into account these elements of reflection,
a group of people from different cultures –
of the East, experts in martial arts,
health professionals, health, like myself –
we have developed a program,
through an association that we call “Vinyana”.
It is a Pali word, which means Global Consciousness.
We have developed some tools,
from the awareness that we are dying
to be able to live fully.
And, in that process,
to be able to accompany, when it’s our turn,
who is in what we call Morimiento.
Since the situation is very similar to the Birth.
In a few moments we will be companions,
and in others we will be protagonists.
Deepening in all that scheme,
we have developed these tools,
I brought here to comment.
To be able to address the theme of Dying,
we speak of different levels.
There is something that we can all recognize,
which is the person who is in that part,
who is dying
Who is dying
it is in a phase,
in which, progressively, it is going to be detached
of all that is the body that we recognize.
The vehicle we are moving through in our biography.
There is a famous neurologist,
who has built a map of how that process is.
In this process I got that there are several phases.
There is a phase when it is recognized,
It shows the vulnerability of our body,
what is the disease,
It is a phase of chaos,
in that moment of recognizing the disease,
something that is happening to us,
all mechanisms are put in place,
to try to defend,
to continue in this dimension,
that we can talk at the biological level, at the organic level.
In that dimension,
in that chaos,
there are phases of denial,
there are haggling phases,
there are phases of trying to ignore what is happening.
Always that process will happen
and we will progressively enter in a next moment,
which is recognition, acceptance.
What the English call “surrender”, which is surrender, stop fighting.
In the chaos phase, everything is conflict.
It’s where the symptoms appear, the pain,
there is suffering and anguish.
Everything that the disease reveals
of a body that is fragile and vulnerable.
In that situation, when we stop fighting,
everything is placed on a level of natural evolution,
in which progressively
let’s go disconnecting from this dimension
and entering a different dimension.
In that phase,
the tools that allow us
live that process creatively
They involve working and realizing.
Realize, using tools such as Role Playing,
which is a kind of dramatization of the event,
that allows us to deepen and recognize what is happening.
Mindfulness, meditation techniques.
And techniques taken from Martial Arts,
that we can apply in the sense that, in Martial Art,
the key to deep combat
It has to do with how to live the present in fullness.
There, something beyond the process of dying,
in which he is living.
It is the role played by the companion.
The companion, whether professional, family or friend,
he has to live as a reflection of the one who is dying,
what is your own limitations.
In those circumstances, sometimes, you do not know what to do.
That’s what we work with tools,
that allow to accept what the other is living.
The Welcome means to understand
from simply connecting to the other’s being.
Tools like: empathy, presence.
A presence that leaves us
be next to the other without losing the center.
Something fundamental
is to recover every time we go to the other party,
since suffering suffers us,
since something that we know is the pain of the other,
and that we would like to be there, to help and resolve.
It puts us before the impotence of not knowing what to do,
when we only allow ourselves to be.
From being ourselves;
from leave
that all the circumstances are placed
that are happening without wanting to modify them.
Without manipulating anything.
Without trying to do anything special.
Letting everything be something normal.
And here is a message that is very important.
Be confident that everything,
When the time comes that it will arrive,
everything will be fine.
Our nature is prepared
to let things happen.
And the greatest difficulty
both as companions, as dying
is that we have been building barriers, throughout life,
that we have to let them fall.
We have to get rid of the roles we are,
of those things that we have become important.
The shamans of America say
that for a person, become wise
You need to lose personal importance.
When in life, everything we do
is to build what we call important,
what has to do with myself, with my ego,
with what I am, with what I have learned.
All that is a way to suffer
that we have to, with the opportunity to die,
we can let it dissolve,
to connect with the essentials
and make that transition,
that is transformative and that, fundamentally,
in a dimension around the dying process
It makes us have the opportunity
to discover the essentials of all human beings.
All that will happen on a stage
which can be the address, the hospital, the street.
What is characterized,
because the dimensions of time and space are broken.
Something that explains quantum physics
and that we can not understand from the rational mind.
In that scenario in which the dying process occurs,
that a situation of opportunity of accompaniment occurs,
learning from what is happening,
what puts us limits in that scenario,
when we are living those moments of transformation
from the abandonment,
from stop fighting,
there appears a state of calm, of peace.
What our grandparents called:
the Wellbeing that there is just before dying.
It was always said that there is a moment, before dying,
which is the return to normal.
From the scientific point of view,
we usually find it when you accompany –
how has it been my life’s work –
to people who are in the moments of dying.
There is always the improvement of death.
That improvement is the moment when we stop fighting
for our survival.
In which we stop living the inertia of being attached to this body.
It is a moment, always, of absolute calm,
that transcends the space in which it is happening,
that transcends the dimensions of time,
that we live it as a linear question, always.
It is sometimes very painful.
We try to do
that the duration of life is something linear.
The interesting thing about knowing that we are mortal,
that we are impermanent,
is that our life is something
which makes sense to expand,
in no case lengthening.
The power that science has, to extend these situations,
It is something that makes sense to avoid.
Learning from our mortality
it’s something of our impermanence,
it is something that gives fullness to the meaning of life.
Talking about dying has to do
with learning to live fully every moment.
In that situation,
in which we talk about companion, stage and dying,
the essential of the human being emerges.
It appears to enter a level of consciousness
In addition, they can not treat medications
because it is a totally different dimension.
What fundamentally appears that gives it meaning,
in that tool to accompany
I was proposing,
is that in the chaos,
in surrender, in transcendence,
What we can use is tool:
the reception of that moment,
the presence to be free
of everything that are somehow our barriers.
Elements like compassion,
what is the decision, the courage to be there,
either way!
Without conditions, impeccably!
To, in that situation, transcend what is happening
and enter in that instant,
in which what unites us all is love.
So the message and reflection,
I wanted to leave at this time,
is that death connects us with essential love,
in which we are all equal,
and that in that dimension what we learn
it is to live dying in every moment.
Thank you very much.
