Theatre as a Life Transforming Tool Within Society | Mawuli Amedofu | TEDxAdum

my name is Polly am Purdue i’m the

co-founder of spring with and double up

as a programs coordinator and spindle

and set out to design first provoking

transformational odd pieces that does

not only entertain but educate edify and

encourage and I’m training myself to

become a cultural interpreter so I’m

involved with various cultural

organizations and I’m part of a cleaver

Dance Theater a dance group that really

helps young people land traditional

dances and other dance forms and I’m

also part of vine school of music that

helps to discover the music in New

especially for children and I know that

any economics but why theatre why should

I go into the other and that’s one

question I’m here to answer I don’t know

whether all of you remember when you

were children did you have an encounter

with Shakespeare well I had an encounter

with Shakespeare friends Romans

countrymen lend me Lord yes I come to

bury Caesar not to praise him and that

was my first encounter with theatre and

the fact is that theater over the years

have shipped lives and have lit and hot

should and ideas on back and over again

now dr. anand Kumar when setting up in

verse you’re gonna decided to add the

School of Performing Arts as the fair

part component of the diversity and as

that’s department is at the surface is

the first department use find when you

enter the university of gamma and that

means that do with a good keepers of the

ideas that shipped Ghana now AB

definitely theater gives us that

environment where we every social

construct you can think about every

social idea every em every idea within

the society is is shipped right and over

the years that the bundle kuma but

regarding kuma was very very very much

instrumental and developing the idea of

the other but there is one thing that

really really drew my attention to the

other scientists know that whenever they

want to do experiment they go to the lab

they have test tubes they have been

balanced they have all the lab

equipments to do the experiment now when

the social scientist wants to do an

experiment yeah does he do that

experiment and I think that the best

place for the social scientists to do an

experiment is the stage is the theater

speaks and that’s why I think that every

organ every country lead to real

engineer engineer its social construct a

psychological construct and for the

engineering space for the sociologist

the psychologist the philosopher is the

theater speech now I know that all of

you will think that okay we have movies

and we have all the videos available to

us but with these movies at with these

video what we see

you ever have a direct contact with the

audience ask the producer oh yes you are

the audience have you ever had that

direct contact with the actors and

theater is the space where every

individual who comes to that states have

a direct interaction with the actives

with the people designing and ensuring

that both social construct those

psychological ideas those fears and

virtually as I stand here there’s a

little bit of tension right those fears

of the address I really really talk to

bear and I see to expect that every

theater show every theater show is

different if an i can simply over over

again but it is different because the

difference is that the audience are

different and their fears that the

actors have within that space is also

different now there was one phenomenon I

remember we were contracted by an

organization juniper tree to design a

sketch for them and that sketch was

talking about rape prevent rates

reported and we as an organization

spring breath good that’s short sketch

for them and it was the first thing to

be done and various individuals tend to

give speeches now can you believe it

that girl the people that give the

speech thing right mud reference to what

we did because not we did the children

within that space who identify with it

you could see it directly between we go

for conferences and there’s a long

speech somebody comes there meets the

whole speech

but in the long run the individuals may

not be able to identify with some of the

issues that have been raised with within

that space so what is that theater

offense the opportunity for communities

to develop so there’s this whole new

concept called tiata for development and

theater for development and shears that

every developmental issue every

developmental iga is brought into that

space and is acted out and Bay is also

even participatory theater whether

community and individuals within the

community participate in that space I’m

here to tell you that sriracha is very

very very important I had the

opportunity of visiting Cape Town and in

cape town they had a lot of theater

species tomorrow in space the theater

space but we have the place the theater

space stars and it’s driving very

important the national data in our class

sells a great lot of papers and I think

that this is the time that c’mon

straight does me out yes burden that no

we need to build a theater please ensure

that we really really engage the youth

and the older people in theater and i

bet you it’s really really going to

enhance the community and whatever we do

thank you very much [Music]
