The Value of Your Anger | Salma Al Khalidi | TEDxYouth@ACSAmman

they international student accepting
different mindsets is crucial being in a
diverse community embracing their
differences is what makes as a private
community it’s detrimental when
individuals take that little community
away due to the fear but they don’t
understand or go to are different it’s
frustrating when those same individuals
use freedom of speech or right to
opinion as an excuse for their ignorance
what’s even more frustrating is from
those who preach acceptance and equality
are those who don’t make a sound when
justice is loud so stirs the excitement
in times of justice are either in
agreement with the oppressor or are
afraid the labels that we begin to them
if they should to speak up activists are
often seen as radical angry or
aggressive for simply believing in the
greater good there’s this negative
connotations behind a positive label
which brainwashes others into believing
that if they choose to speak up they’ll
be seen as annoying social justice
warriors I’ve encountered the reality of
speaking up
I’ve been confronted with obvious
unethical in justices and the only word
I can describe how I felt is I agree
I don’t filter my words and I say when
you speak them but I’m always taken
aback by the words there any I’m
suddently C&C has unfair disrespectful
or
mystic for saving a lot of human decency
I’m also taken aback with my attempts to
educate on why these justices are
unethical are seen as attempts to
degrade another’s intelligence or
morality I used to be scared I didn’t
want to be seen as the annoying social
justice warrior but it’s open
exhilarating every moment of it being
loud and being clear and finding the
confidence in yourself that you never
thought you had when this so wrong about
wanting to see a positive change in
society
let’s take feminism for example feminism
is the advocacy of women’s rights on the
grounds of the Equality of the sexes
that’s not so bad correct
I mean what’s so sinful about wanting to
grant women their fundamental human
rights
I personally identify as a feminist and
no that doesn’t mean I hate you of your
man that means I want my rights my
daughter’s rights my granddaughters
rights and every other person who
identifies as a woman’s rights but
suddenly once one possesses desire to
demand their own human rights they are
suddenly seen as radical man haters
those who have those who are threatened
by the motives behind feminism are those
who have generated a stigma behind the
word feminist so yes I am angry I’m
furious actually and I used to be
insecure about how my motives were
grounded by anger I can’t even tell you
how many times I’ve gotten the phrase
chill out or don’t take everything so
seriously however I once wrote this
quote by Tim McIlrath who states real
revolution starts at learning if you’re
not angry then you’re not paying
attention that’s when I began to wonder
am I too angry or people not angry
enough I’d like to go back several years
akshay I’d like to go back to December
1st 1955 in Montgomery Alabama when
civil rights activist Rosa Parks refused
to obey a bus drivers order to give a
in the colored section after the
right section was filled for a right
woman Rosa
parks transformed an entire nation
because she was angry she was angry and
she was frustrated and that’s why we
know her name today what’s so wrong
about wanting to see a positive change
in society hashtag black lives matter
for Eric garner John Crawford the 3rd
and Tamir rice and suddenly our white
hating savage attend the women’s March
for all those years of systemic
oppression and patriarchy and suddenly
here a radical feminazi why are we not
curious as to why our anger is
constantly suppressed why are we
allowing labels to define our actions
people are afraid of those who are
different once those who are different
are given a platform to express their
thoughts and values they are shut down
once they begin to speak derogatory
words and labels will be thrown in
defense silencing ourselves in times of
injustice is allowing the fears of
others to govern our own actions but
your silence is more dangerous than what
silences you transfer the power of the
fear of labels to the strength of your
voice be loud be clear and be angry
thank you
