when on a 13 years old I finally an end
to her Jewish the gauntlet now at this
point I could finally do all sorts of
cool manly things such as reading the
Bible with a sing-songy telling a very
exciting cutting a cake for yes just
kidding they would never trust me with a
knife I could burn the whole synagogue
down and finally just for fun on the
side 100% accountability and
responsibility for all my citizens it
was about that time when I realized this
whole adulthood thing was somewhat of a
step three years later and the house of
jr. in Homestead High School I’m
standing in front of the doors of
adulthood once more but between taxes
student loans and God forbid real
responsibility I’m beginning to think
that maybe I should brush that quickly
into this whole adulthood business fool
me once shame on leave it will be twice
there is however one benefit to adult
though that keeps on coming and that is
your pension
you see adulthood means freedom and
freedom means the ability to choose why
you wake up every morning and what a
better reason to wake up every morning
the new passion to do what you love
every single day as kids we’ve always
been told to follow our passion pack
we’ve been told this to such a degree
that our passion
guns almost defiance there’s a reason
that passion is the art topic of this
conference everyone has them or at least
that’s what I thought when I first heard
about this conference I decided to do
the responsible thing and at first thing
second you see I knew I wanted to be in
this conference so I immediately signed
up and you know told myself that I’d
probably find an idea worth staring
somewhere along by how hard could it
possibly be I could talk about math or
science art philosophy yet the more I
looked into each one of these subjects
more realize how hard it was for me to
define any of these things that’s truly
my passion don’t get me wrong I can talk
about Plato or Aristotle for hours but
when hours becomes 365 days a year and
the average life expectancy is 75 years
Spinoza is great but he’s not that great
this is a relation was naturally quite
troubling not because it showed me that
passion but because it’s brutally
reminded me of it the truth is I’ve
known it for years though my friends
know me as the person who’s done writing
a book and a blog about philosophy I
didn’t do it because I loved it I did it
because I was good at it and so if
anything was my passion I hope that it
be it now nonetheless how many people do
you know who dabble in philosophy David
not nobody but I would imagine not too
many people alive there so despite it
not necessarily being my passion it gave
me meaning because it gave me a way to
do
and the question is somewhat hazardous
fulfilling me on that level what’s wrong
with this why can’t I just be satisfied
with that let’s look back at the suppose
which I’m writing at this point it has
become somewhat infamous relatively slow
pace of its file I’m writing about the
one-page give or take a year you think
I’m joking
[Music]
now you’d also think that that’s a bad
thing but this is really I mean after
all I’m following my passion am I not I
might complete the book in a hundred and
sixteen years but who cares right
I don’t have to be the guy who wrote a
book about philosophy I can be the guy
who’s writing a book about a philosophy
that’s unique enough that gives me
meaning let’s go back to one of the
questions I asked earlier how little
does one actually have to write in order
to write one page per year by pursuing
this passion without a goal I’m
essentially becoming a planet but the
purpose is there in finding a meaning to
life if I must sacrifice living in order
to find this now clever clever john doe
sitting along the 25th feet of row three
over here is asking well Deb why don’t
you just write a second book and to that
I’ll say well first off I’m optimistic
as I am I don’t think I will live to the
age of 250 and the other thing is I
don’t think that would be able to
satisfy me either
let’s talk about a seat for a moment in
his essay on the use and abuse of
history in our time in each say describe
something that we all know yet often
forget there’s this fundamental
between feeling satisfied and being
satisfied as a state of beauty which
makes the keen observation that she are
supposedly quite happy creatures they
live their life hopping from one Hill to
head to another enjoying graphs enjoying
the moment but that’s exactly the point
they’re enjoying the moments just after
plexus comes to the moments so distant
lecturer fade away at a moment’s spoiler
alert’ meets a dozen actually talking
about sheep it’s a matter if I write a
book once I finish it I will feel
fulfilled if I solve this fraud but then
immediately afterwards is going to go
away if I solve this problem by writing
a second book then the feeling will go
away to once again now I can continue to
solving this problem in a circle of
writing more and more and more books but
while I will feel satisfied
I won’t ever find myself in a situation
where I am satisfied she’s a sheep who
live in the moment have no past and more
importantly they have no future to
pursue a goal or to achieve your
passions without some kind of hierarchy
goal a larger scheme to your life
renders your life meaningless so what
have we learned the pursuit of passion
without the achievement of mountain
turns you into a planet and the pursuit
of passion with achievement of passion
without a goal turns you into a sheep it
seems that we were stuck in some sort of
corner of either choosing to live life
without meeting or find anything without
living life between being and being
plants why is it so hard to just be
human how do we learn to these
thing that we were supposed to be born
being well alive good night everybody
good talk
hasta luego okay this would be a
terrible place to end the tension
however if it’s such a bad place to end
the temp job why do we often end our
conversations with ourselves right here
too often when we reach a rather
depressing hole and whatever but to be
honest with ourselves this is a pretty
depressing polemic conversation
we immediately demon as a radical and so
we return to our negative behavior
despite lingering sensation that it’s
not satisfied because even a life where
I pretend to have meaning it’s better
than a life where I’ve searched meeting
because by searching for meaning we are
admitting that we have not yet found it
but this is ontology is self Harmon
we’re denying ourselves the binding of
meaning just inches away from where it
truly is so luckily for you guys well I
would normally run away as well into my
rabbit hole you all pay zero dollars for
this conference and I intend to give you
your money towards so but let’s move on
and ask ourselves if we want to be human
what does it mean to be human now
there’s a repeating theme in this and
what that is is I want to define myself
I want a passion I want a meaningful
fashion math is fundamentally a wanting
machine we want let out we want food we
want shelter and if we may be so crude
we want to be happy while we do so and
so there’s a reason that satisfaction
that that is the reason that satisfied
is the ultimate measure of our designers
yet an artist can paint a painting as
we’ve seen and and after can can act in
a play and a musician can write a piece
and would satisfy him in the moment but
for some reason not satisfying for long
not all satisfaction is equal so at this
point it’s easy to just throw defining
ourselves by our passions entirely it
doesn’t seem to have been working for
anybody however of course drawing the
painting won’t satisfy me we’re writing
a song a little satisfy me or or
finishing some big business deal won’t
satisfy me because this conversation
didn’t start with I want to buy a piece
or I want to draw painting this
conversation started with I want a
passion a far more fundamental one than
any other is the wants to want how do we
fulfill someone like that that’s such an
abstract concept something that’s often
confusing and weird that the answer is
though I’ve written and edited this
speech at least 500 million times is I
don’t know I really don’t perhaps it’s
because I’m 16
perhaps it’s because a milkman answer
can be written in 15 minutes but because
he talked about in 50 minutes but I
simply don’t have the courage to stand
before you and tell you that I have the
complete answer everything that I wrote
ina seem to be a cheesy cliche except
for one thing which may not be the whole
answer but always kind of defined the
way that I lived and that was a story my
mother
when I was little it was a story about a
mother her child and a cake you see if a
mother eats one piece of the cake she
satisfied she’s enjoyment
she’s also enjoyed with the second piece
and the third piece and a little less on
the fourth and a little less on the
fifth then until she could no longer
even look at it
however when she gives a peace to her
son she is immediately satisfied we want
to want for others previously I’ve said
that I’ve loved philosophy but what did
that really mean that I love you know
solving abstract concepts sure yes but
what I really enjoyed about buying
philosophy was whenever somebody Bennet
had said wow I really relate to this you
changed my perspective as an actor
there’s nothing you wait for more than
the applause of the audience art
literature these are ways of
communication
it wouldn’t have satisfied any of us if
nobody was looking at it or reading
readings now will this short answer
solve all of your life questions
probably minutes however we all have
something in common today throughout the
course of this conference you’ve heard
gypsum watch the first teenagers young
adults of all ages as well as statistics
and all of us every single one of them
including the audience have one thing in
common
we’re all a little bit of lost souls
drops in a world that’s filled with so
many concepts so many passions that it
is far too great for only
one of us to completely find out and in
a day for writing at i tought speech
however together or we’re an ocean and
the all oceans lead to store this isn’t
the end of the line this isn’t the end
of the question this isn’t the end of
the conversation
it’s thus the end of this specific
thought thank you very much [Applause]
