The Social Capital | Margaret Gibson | TEDxBlythswoodSquare

hi there thanks very much and I believe
that talent is universal however I
believe also the opportunity isn’t and
the reason for saying that is I suppose
from my own personal experience I was
really lucky I grew up in a house that
was filled with love hey I’m a more
safety and a lot of kidding
hello Fred there was a lot of money my
dad was a lordy giant that he worked
really long hours my mom worked in the
factory she wouldn’t reveal them all no
I looked around I suppose I’m gonna want
to look back now I never kept the people
that were around me in terms of my mom
and dad’s family and friends they would
all seem sort of people just really
pleased to be keeping a job really
pleased to have fit in the table really
pleased just about making paying the
bills
I’m I’d like to think that you know
life’s moved on from that but I spent 30
years of my career working with
particularly a challenged communities I
don’t like to call that I think it’s
communities of opportunity because I
think if we as a society actually looked
at the people that are really getting
laid from behind and actually invested
and made lots of changes these
communities become much more empowered
they actually contribute to an economy
and actually in terms of the well-being
of society and we make a positive
positive change so while I was
researching for this I came across this
card to instruct an apology’s if you
can’t quite see at the back but done by
a guy called Toby mortis and Toby really
basically introduces to young people so
we could Richard here and then we’ve got
Paula
so basically no do no key and that
should probably come strong became a
family that I’ve got no Paula probably
was me when I was younger so sorry but
check your finger there sorry about that
chips what here you can seize that lots
of toys he’s get either he’s living in a
house that’s called two books that’s
probably it
heating system was probably mass it’s a
toy and what masseter Claus and his
water power is let them in the house of
beer floorboards it’s beneficial because
they only have talked about fairly Betty
you know if Orkut everything the way
that she dissing anything I wouldn’t
child to so much less that situation and
you know she’s got she’s got people that
are there for her but there’s not a lot
of cash I don’t and there’s certainly
not a lotta cash to spend on the main
cities of of life or as I would see it
the necessities just nourishment and
books and toys and wholesome and warmth
so basically as Rachel’s going through
his life in these parents are really
interested I know that the Chinese do
that do this home that is get his
homework done and you know is probably
getting lots of really good clubs get
take to gymnastics or football or if
this starts to feel familiar you
recognize that that’s that’s as PMS the
kind of things you want for your child
the reality is a lot of communities a
male away from where we are can’t get
that to that children and I think it’s
really important to him in for that as
we go on
so Palace B&C oh yeah be really cute
about it has failed but you know why
they’re doing two jobs each my dad just
leave the host on a Sunday night and he
came back and a thirsty having jumping
up to Aberdeen Dundee don’t–i London
Liverpool Manchester my mom used to
leave the house at 7:00 in the morning
and got my cat sex at night
utterly exhausted and gene from I really
really hated exactly they love this but
I would have just late word of the one I
was growing up and but you know they
were there and they died the best acute
so Richard continues to do really well
he’s back at school he’s going to school
and and the teachers are really love
what they’re doing the probably quite
well resourced they can probably take
the cats out and quite a lot of
interesting in Deer traps they can
probably get the children to really
concentrate because
very engaged there being being selected
for that those particular types of
skills because the game good academic
results for Palo middle I saw she’s me
being an idiot we’re touched on again
earlier maybe half the cancer that’s
stealing and hungry if you think about
when you’re hungry at work how do you
feel the concentration depth you
actually feel really tired you may feel
about what’s drawing you may actually
get to argument with people in meetings
because you’re hungry right so imagine
if you get twenty seven people in the
class and have a look at them like that
do not really really get the chance to
learn an awful or if that’s the kind of
environment that they’re selling ting
unity to be pieces so you know if you I
don’t know possession weird you’re
getting a b-plus and it’s not good
enough you get u-turned but if you’re in
possession we’re getting a B that’s an
amazing achievement if you’ve come from
a school bag live like that so as I see
Chuck was off to university mom and dad
happy for them put my hand up sunny
University’s snow mom and dad at pinis
rate it still works
he’s got he’s got his own planting job
but I’m penes Dre and his dad Stevie J
Paula she’s juggling good at Polytechnic
now it’s me I had I had the great
support you need we couldn’t afford to
go I had an older brother man who’d
assessed and who the lady left school at
the first point you could to go and get
jobs to play money into the house I was
really lucky I still feel guilty
forty years later that I was the one
that got like what the education the
potentially education that my my sister
my brother doesn’t but I didn’t mean
that doesn’t work I had a cleaning job
two days a week in the morning before I
went to college actually worked in a bar
Savino loose tying in a band so I had to
what came thick but it really did and we
had probably quite negatively one my
experience of studying so I think that’s
another thing to think about Wallace
really had a bad time effect she’s had
she’s had healing responsibilities as
well and a lot of the young people that
we work with particularly and in the
not-for-profit sector they are in that
possession when you could walk in
poverty it comes with lots of additional
challenges as the film we saw of the
tape the TEDx detect the main tech man’s
buzzer their presentation it impacts on
your health and before you know it you
can be caring for to set periods and and
they may only be in the late forties
early fifties my dad was into some
fifteen children is that data into 42
very very difficult life and you know
just it just perpetuates the challenge
and halfway through your lives then
we’ve got the whole you know that’s just
it just keeps building up and building
up you don’t have the social capital so
the MS the message was point there which
was has lectured points a bit of work
expedience dad’s got a really great
network know when I was 22 have no idea
what network boys and you know I doesn’t
realize that people had family in flames
that would help you to get work I just
thought that you know that’s I mean
capable opportunity that I never even
realized and it really only had one to
me when I found a job selling shoes in
the department store and the people I
was a college wife started doing place
that
the deal in Ecuador ste or PR PR
companies or really interesting rules
and when I dug a little bit deeper have
you got them o matic knew somebody or my
mom worked with somebody or my dad
please go forth I didn’t have and a lot
of the young people that we work with in
the third sector don’t have that either
so right away from the very GetGo your
social competence on the rate people
necessarily hand up not a handout that’s
not what this is about it’s about giving
people our hand up to get them moving on
time what a positive please and then it
just becomes insidious trying to get and
trying to get a lawn to get something
trying to get a mortgage it becomes more
and more difficult as you keep trying to
move to the net the next level look in
life if you do not have that backbone of
networks and support and encouragement
behind you and then you’ve got the whole
you’re getting a good job and somebody
support me because they know the family
you come from and it becomes another
layer of challenge that could fall on us
to taint by every food and then with
collective being must have success
always probably won an award or is being
promoted it’s just fantastic and of the
poor like you know who’s trying to end a
benefits to cash and she’s the waitress
for the appeal the employer at all is
that my son who has had the advantage of
my network and has had lots of work
experience throughout his life in has
worked really hard for it
does not ever use those words that
Richard uses that no please are the
hands don’t be anything on a plate
because I would be incredibly ashamed of
them and if that was the keys the other
thing I just wanted to touch on is
I suppose that the notion of a self-made
man and a self meet women I don’t think
that ever exists I think we are all a
result of every kind work I’ve ever been
given of every bit of encouragement
whatever be some someone’s given us even
the negatives that we get that’s the mix
character of who we are and what we do
with life personally I think that I’ve
also got a 15 year old daughter and I
get fed up when I go to appearance
nights and all I ever do it anyone ever
wants to talk about is her academic
achievements I know what they are I know
the percentages that she gets an A in
exams
what I want to know is is she kind is
she thoughtful does she support people
does she play does she make friends is
she socialized actually I think these
are the things that you take with you
and education is important but actually
let’s start valuing other things that
aren’t just about in educational results
and help people to move on and to
appreciate each other I love in a quote
that went that’s attributed to Winston
Churchill additional you make a life by
what was there but you may give me so
you make a living by what you get really
make a life by what we give and then the
rules I’ve always had I’ve always been
incredibly supported and encouraged by
the people who give in terms of their
time in terms of the expertise and just
even seeing and the some of the slides
are up earlier the roburt up about the
number of people getting volunteering
hours to the number to charities we have
in Scotland that make my heart swell
because it’s very easy to keep thinking
in your own little bubble that you are
you know you’re really busy you get your
own family you
it would focus is little challenges with
the number of people that step out of
that and give two three four five hours
a week to help other people I think and
incredibly inspiring thing to do and
also I think the impact of that in
warden on and on from years just on
Friday I got a text message drama a
young women that I helped a couple years
ago with a benefit face she’s in a
really difficult place and I’ll be
perfectly frank went yeah I completely
forgot that I had done it and she sent
me a expense lady and I was thinking who
is this girl she asked if I would corner
wound her and then it collected when she
started to tell me what what the
situation was
she was sporting me to tell me that it
taken two years to get the benefit face
of Governor into action but it’s
actually what taught her and she was in
a much much better place both mentally
and financially and no matter what
happens to me the rest of this month I
think when things get tough I’ll think
about her because she can offer as a as
a volunteer they forget that these
things can happen
impacts pretty you know it’s almost like
throwing a paper wall in the river and
our table and the water of the point and
it just watching watching the ripple
effect I think I’d just like to kind of
finish off we’re just asking all of you
to thank goodness but just to be caned
just to be kind to people if you find
yourself about to see something negative
or not particularly harmonious and the
life that you have whether that be it
were could be a home try and keep those
works in and just try and think about it
you know
came to me my sister-in-law is a
Samaritan and she said that and the
number of older people that fall and
they just want to speak because they are
so incredibly woodenly and it really as
a family we need the discussion that
I’ve heard evident like you to buy
anything whether it’s in a supermarket
or in a department store that we would
stop and have a look and if it was a lot
of person in front of behind or nomaks
have actually just look at the people
who’ll end up behind and just speak to
them and as British people we all lately
talking about the bay there so you can
always just season called day to day or
whether you might be the only person in
that person’s life that’s actually
notice them let’s have a conversation
with them that day so you you often have
no idea of the impact of that kind
worked so I would just like to finish by
saying be kind be thoughtful and be
particularly aware of young people
around you and do what you can to help
them to build on maybe the lack of social capital
