imagine a society where individuals
lives were completely acknowledged in
dignity and where people work together
to make our society into a more
compassionate one driven by innovation
now this is where the statement can
become confusing by one because how do
we know what innovation means by simply
saying it how many of you have been told
to create something innovative and how
many of you have gone through with this
I have been told for years and programs
to create something innovative my peers
would become overwhelmed with this term
innovation linked to an idea that can
almost not exist causing them to ignore
their aspirations so I challenged this
term innovation for the past five years
now to uncover its simplistic depth a
few years ago I was involved in a
program where I was challenged to create
the energy of the future which consisted
of me working with a group of students
to develop a product over the course of
the year now when I realized that this
product had to be innovative I
immediately jumped to the conclusion
that the idea had to be far-fetched and
almost unattainable but what I did know
was that this product that I was
creating had to help individuals in
finding the dignities that they deserved
so when going through the brainstorming
process I came across an image of
students and developing nations working
in dark crowded classrooms lacking
creativity and color after talking to
witnesses I learned that these students
valued their education because it was
their key to a success of fortune for
both themselves and their families
these students would walk miles to
school every day and miles home where
they would then have to complete their
homework under street lamps due to
faulty electrical towers at home these
students deserved to feel valued and
that they had dignity so my team and I
decided that our product would consist
of a portable laughs desk with an
attachable light which they could bring
from school so
home this idea did not come easily
however because we dealt with the
problem which was faced by many in
today’s society causing us to not help
as many individuals as we should which
is not understanding the simplistic
depth of innovation see originally our
idea was complex consisting of a
portable lap desk with a fan light as
the students were writing on the desk
their energy would cause the light to
turn on sounds impressive right we
thought this was the pinnacle of
innovation yet I realized that there had
to be a simpler way to solve this
problem I realized that innovation is
not always about creating something
far-fetched rather it consists of
creating a value for these individuals
see if we were to follow this complex
prototype we would have to wait months
for all the logistics to be solved and
while waiting months for these logistics
to be solved these individuals were
missing out on the dignities that they
deserved in that moment I realized that
innovation is not always about creating
something great or grant-making you the
creator looks superior rather it’s about
creating the value for the product or
service that you’re making for these
individuals in helping them find their
dignities see our final product was
simple but it served a multitude of
problems the desk a delight which was
cranked able which allowed students to
understand engineering in their
education
it was detachable so they could bring it
from school to home where there were
faulty electrical towers and it was
hand-painted which inspired them to be
creative and most importantly it made
them feel valued and that they had a
voice in their dignity this problem was
once neglected by entrepreneurs but by
understanding its simplicity I took on
this challenge what if we were all
aware of this there would be more unity
in the world
and what if we were to each take one
problem that moves us each of us over
the course of a year and solve it
through innovation using our hands to
create something that helps others using
our voices to speak for the voiceless
and using our minds to think of a
problem and solve it if we were to each
take this one problem that moves us
Society would hold a greater future for
future generations
innovation is tangible if we move past
ourselves and focus on why we are
creating this product or service that’s
helping these individuals find their own
dignities that they have the right to
have thank you
