The serendipity of media | Katherine West | TEDxLakeTravisHigh

is anything that we do on the media
serendipitous isn’t is a new show or
movie that you found actually found by
chance or was it predetermined by
countless algorithms and formulas
companies used to make the most profit
what’s an algorithm an algorithm is
something that allows computers to solve
problems
it’s what takes the information you give
the computer and turns it into
recommendations for you now we’ve all
been there
scrolling through endless shows and
movies trying to find one that appeals
enough to watch when you scroll through
the recommended for you section and find
movies and shows that are eerily similar
to what you have previously watched even
when you first start to s most accounts
it asks you select content that you know
that you enjoy so in theory all that
you’re seeing is actually based on that
though video streaming services are not
the only ones who utilize this as music
streaming services like Pandora utilize
it as well Pandora uses a thumbs-up
thumbs-down algorithm you thumbs up
songs that you like you thumbs down
songs that you don’t so if I would do
thumbs down songs from newer albums and
then thumbs up songs from older albums
it would only play me the older songs
determining when and where I’m listening
to what music Netflix also recently
switched over to a similar thumbs-up
thumbs-down algorithm and as proved as
successful as over 80% of people find
their next show or movie through the
recommended for you section Netflix also
uses system of text for example if I
were to watch stranger things
it would have tags like supernatural and
science-fiction and then Netflix would
note those tags and then recommend me
shows like Riverdale and black mirror
based on that information I’ve concluded
that there is actually very little on
the internet that is serendipitous this
is because companies believe the
information that we want to see is the
information that has been personalized
to suit our interests there are many
pros and cons to this a pro would be
that there is personalized information
ready available for you whenever you
want it though a con would be that
the information that is shown to you on
the Internet will end up looking
extremely similar and you will be stuck
and what one reaches your researcher
calls a recommendation red and one more
dangerous Colin is in search engines
when you search stuff you were normally
recommended a list of things that you
should search based on previous searches
which depending on which one you choose
can drastically influence the actual
results of your search so are we all
actually getting the most accurate
information from the Internet
this is not a phenomena that will fade
away anytime soon I’ll show my Netflix
recently investing five million dollars
though there are ways you can make the
internet more serendipitous like asking
friends and family what they enjoy on
the internet or reading online reviews
though probably the best way is to
restart your accounts choose options
that are unknown or different to you and
you might find something really great
choose the unconventional options and
you might find something exceptional
