The relationship between success and failure | Gabriel Cusick | TEDxYouth@Harlow

what Disney was fired from a newspaper
for not being creative enough and lost
the rights to his first character Oswald
the Lucky Rabbit Steve Jobs was fired
from his own company for Bink
uncontrollable and his projects unviable
and yet these two went on to become two
of the most influential and successful
people in the world today I’d like to
talk about the connection between
success and failure how we learned from
failure and why failure is important I
feel this topic should be heard because
success is noticed and rewarded but
failures overlooked or even punished
failure is not a bad thing and can be
turned into a success for example Eton
Mess Eton Mess was created so the story
goes at an Eastern cricket match where
strawberry meringue and cream were
dropped on the floor rather than waste
the food it was simply scooped up and
served in individual bowls most people
would not consider Eton Mess a failure
rather a delicious success for me
success and failure are like two close
friends neither of which can function
without the other success is not failing
where failure is not being successful
this is showing through Thomas Edison
like many scientists and inventors his
success was through failure each
material he successfully rejected for
his lightbulb was a step closer to
completing his goal to learn from
failure takes resilience the power and
the strength to carry on to never let
the hurdles of failure stop you on your
path of success no one is born with
resilience it’s something we build up by
failing we need to show that failure is
acceptable it’s in our nature as humans
to get things wrong we can choose to
either let this destroy us or rise from
the ashes like
if not all heroic figures Winston
Churchill was kept back a year at school
to later become an inspirational leader
Abraham Lincoln felled dozens of
businesses before becoming one of
America’s greatest presidents if someone
in here thinks they have never failed
then they’re not being truthful with
themselves
and I will stand up in front of 200 of
you and say I have failed I do
archery and art that mirrors this
perfectly every time I miss or fail I
adjust my sights and fire again and
again and again each time getting better
making progress at times to little
progress until I hit my success I think
of success like a muscle like a muscle
must tear to get stronger you must fail
to succeed think back to Walt Disney’s
Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison what did
they do faced with failure I’ll tell you
not only did they learn from him and
shake him by the hand but they welcomed
him into the their lives I’d like to
leave you with the quote by Samuel
Beckett ever tried ever failed
no matter try again fail again fail
better
well it wasn’t as scary as I thought no
I need to try something bigger we need
400 in the audience has done and so when
you spill food you just take it off the
floor and eat it and call it give it a
name yeah Dave’s a mess a mess so what
would be if people talk about the recipe
for success but you’re saying you can’t
have success without failure yeah what’s
the recipe for failure not having success
