hi everybody my name is Emma Shirky and
I’m here tonight to talk to you about
our sisterhood I’d like to start my talk
with a quick question asking anyone in
the audience who has their own identity
to raise my hand it seems silly but I
promise questions simply because I know
that I have my own identity I’ll friend
a Catholic a student a tea lover a
makeup junkie and science nerd and most
importantly to be a sister being a
sister is my favorite part of who I am
because it connects me to the people
that mean the most to me another mop we
share parents my sister’s help me define
who I am and help me love that
definition I’m lucky enough to be able
to witness sisterhood in my everyday
life in both of its aspects these
aspects being wrong sisterhood and
biological sisters in the larger sense
of the word sisters come in all shapes
and sizes in teams sororities big groups
of girlfriends certain all-girls private
schools in Summit New Jersey
you got a drift a wise woman once taught
me we are sisters we stand together we
make up one day family who we don’t look
the same
yes this woman was a deep Raven Symone
and her Gina girls days and yes indeed I
was seven when I got this message but
regardless of however when the message
stacks and what she taught me was that
the connections that I’m making today
are warming me for today shaping me for
the future and developing me as a person
for who I want to be later on in 2010
the National Association of single-sex
public education ran a study
investigating the long-term effects of
DBS
high school and what they got was that
women and left single sex high school
we’re not only more likely to to enter
to enter a bit subjective study and less
likely to enter a female subject of
study but that they also tended to enter
the least segregated fields of study
within their college education so
basically I’d like to take a second to
thank my fellow oral Royals for allowing
me to simultaneously be both fascinated
completely by the brain and completely
by anything coming from or what was
sudden touched on the fact that when
they coming from single sex schools were
more likely to study in stem major it
also touched on the idea that coming
from an all-girls school there has to be
less distraction right the study ended
up proving that there was a conclusive
data office theory but I went about
Ropin all segments I’m pretty well
focused here additionally having an
older sister who’s part of a sorority
I’ve been able to witness one of the
broader types Lisa R or sorority
aesthetic sisterhood in my own a life
without necessarily infiltrating
together better idea sororities impact
on its members I interviewed an
Executive Council member of my sisters
all sorority the Zeta Tau Alpha chapter
of Sacred Heart University the interview
touched on basic things like how she met
her best friend Rosita and how well she
finds common hobbies monk resistance the
sororities quick little play on a word
system but what I found to be most
inspiring
was that when she was prompted with the
question what do you find to be the best
part of the sisterhood of CTA she
responded the best part of the
sisterhood
ilyich balance eta is that it is amazing
the icon girl who encouraged me to do
the best thing that I had and and to be
the best version of myself and who are
always inspiring me to change
James I remember thinking that’s it she
can so perfectly summed up and so
perfectly understood that when you have
this force this power behind you that
there’s very little that you can’t
accomplish first of all you my sisters
have covered from a bunch of different
areas of my life the girls that I met at
Oak Knoll who have conversations in
French while I try to decipher what I
can from my figures of Latin the girls
that I met through some years ago on a
mission trip and now can’t imagine
spending a day without coffee – and of
course the 62 other girls that I
broached through classes every single
day on the other hand now growing up the
sisters at home has the power over
someone with another hug really have a
second for me I have three sisters Sarah
a ble and I not only choose to be their
friend but I could have a great
relationship with them as a sister – and
because of this I’m home for a long time
that they’ve been making me a better
person since I was a little girl
recently Brigham Young University read
an investigation of the relationships of
sisters and how effective a woman after
she wrong and what they found was that
as women had sisters as children not
only experienced less negative emotions
but also felt more loved by those brown
mom this is because in their sister they
find someone who is not only willing to
love them unconditionally
despite each differences with drama or
stolen shoes or whatever else you can
think of but that they can rely on for
anything
similarly the University of Pulsar found
that when studying the relationships of
sisters that women grow up with sisters
were more balanced more goal oriented
and more independent what was amazing
about what the University of Ulster
found however was that also found that
the girls who had felt all this
independence and goal orientation and
balance in their
was that they had found this to the most
common in adolescent Eames
who had been experiencing a rocky period
in their life so basically by creating a
support system among their sisters girls
were able to communicate effectively
with each other
apply that effective communication to
decisiveness about what they want for
themselves and apply that decisiveness
to what they want for their futures
again as I said before I have three
sisters Sara Abby and Ellie and they’re
each completely different for me and
completely insane as me too and it’s an
effective of an effective relationship
that you can’t really understand
I must were the one living up a
sisterhood my sister to go older and
younger than I Sarah is four years old
of me obvious thirteen months younger
than me and Ellie is two years older
than me
and so through our relationship I’ve
been able to find that they each impact
me in their own way but I think the best
way to address the address they’ve had
on me is to address them each
individually – Sarah you are my leader
you said jump and the other three
sisters follow blindly and ask how high
you’ve taught me a lot about life the
importance of positivity the best way to
make an effortless looking curl and how
to be a good friend I owe a lot to you
way more than you could ever front me
for sushi in Oakland but most of all I
like my confidence you’ve never let it
slip not for a second and I’m aware of
Who I am today because you never let me
forget it Cissy thank you for being all
I can hope to be and helping me discover
who I want to be
– Abby you’re my right hand even when it
doesn’t seem like that what I’m offering
you return
music or defending you please send me
that extra so I can put it on scram but
I like to think of us as each other’s
perfect complements I keep you up I keep
you grounded and you help me fly a ball
higher it took about 13 years of
practical jokes that we both took way
too seriously but as soon as we realize
that we actually like each other our
relationship turned into one of the
greatest friendships I could ever ask
for Adam you inspire me to live a dairy
buff to see the happiness things around
me and to know that my place is on top
and to settle for nothing less – Ellie
you’re the little sister the baby daddy
one who asks but the reality of our
relationship is that you’re only two
years younger than me and you’re two
inches taller recently I’ve come to
realize that above all the sisters were
the most similar from our love of cheesy
rom-coms to country music and because of
that when I look at you I see myself two
years earlier and through that you’ve
given me a gift that no one else will
ever be able to give me when I look at
you I see my own personal growth but I
also see who I want to be someone eager
and awaiting standing on the brink of
something always looking for the next
opportunity or adventure to take Ellie
you inspire me to live a bold daring
life you give me an example of what
balance is and how to know what the more
there’s no one I’m proud to know than
you three and as you each succeed on
your own personal merit whether it be
finally living that
internship scouring the state
championship winning goal or become a
freshman class president know that I’m
kind of doing everything you do and you
are the biggest part of any success that
I have to anyone else if you have a
sister biological or not they’re the
power of your relationship is Amyris and
it’s one that no study will ever be able
to explain to us before I go I’d like to
leave you all with one last quote spoken
by a true title the best thing hold on
to in life is each other Audrey Hepburn
thank you
you
