The ‘New New World’: French Identity Beyond Stereotypes | Julien Suaudeau | TEDxBrynMawrCollege

good morning thank you more for me
very honored that’s the use one my name
is Juliana go I am the coordinator of
non intensive French we strike at Bryn
Mawr and I teach French francophone
Studies classes I am going to tell you
by this morning about what I know French
stereotypes and how they are evolving
obviously but first I’d like to start
off with a little anecdote that’s
relevant I think thought because know
what I’m going to address this morning
the euro is 99 freedom thing and I’m
doing an internship had a major French
newspaper so as you can imagine I’m
mostly serving coffee and doing
photocopies but this one particular
night the guy who is responsible for
making the captions under the
photographs is sick so I mean joy and
there’s five minutes left until the
deadline or sevak sending the articles
to Prince and I got all from the
Washington correspondence I’ve said I
just a new cable with this picture of
the dinner ambassadors with Bill Clinton
and I just need you to identify boys on
the picture and especially the French
ambassador I said great oh go ahead do
that I have no idea how this guy goes
but you have to remember this in 1993 we
don’t have internet FaceTime you know
has technically gone have email and just
stable and the telephone so I
I do my best I have no idea who this guy
is and so I call back the first woman in
Washington say I don’t know give me a
hint
no clue well don’t you know that French
people on the international stage are
the ones on the only ones were not
smiling to the economy I look at it like
that we get the picture and they’re all
smiling there’s no single guy who’s not
smiling
I think it’d be chance and I hope the
guy like second time in there’s 30
seconds before the deadline I’m sorry
girls
he’s exasperated by the time said okay
if he’s smiling that he’s not showing
his teeth but everyone else is sure
enough the one guy the one french guy
with future a smile like this everybody
else is either American or Americanized
so mmm
Here I am saying it right at the time
and thinking that all these years I
would strengthen figure out with
freshness and a great mess about Miss
West and see smiley without showing her
teeth sharp cool the first residents of
the Fifth Republic her wish we still are
still live he didn’t smile much this guy
is probably trying to smile little baby
he’s not various and so on so on so
forth so it’s what’s interesting for me
and there’s stuffy good stereotypes
how can I find my own identity or how
can I let other people define it because
I can’t help I can’t prevent other
people having a perception about Who I
am without stereotyping this
stereotyping are given when I’m defining
identity wouldn’t you think about French
identity we think about you know dwell
aviv parts museum a certain elements to
some extent these are all stereotypes
and I’m gonna strike first and go over
this your types that I’m going to try
and deconstruct them because as a
teacher it’s really what I should be
doing but in the meantime this is
Avengers game because perhaps this is
very stereotypes red white coffee
elegance fashion is what drew my French
students to French in the first place
so when you – when you do instruct you
have to do that very very very carefully
this way to meet people
sipping coffee or a glass of red wine or
wait on the terrace is exactly what the
recent terrorist attacks targeted in
France young people enjoying themselves
together and enjoy at least a sense of
freedom are we stuck in this idealized
romanticized vision of friends forever
and is it a problem that this is no
longer reality
a great I personally don’t have I don’t
think the problem is the white steer
inside the bread bag exterior it’s like
the fashion series I’ve been music in
spirits like the Nostradamus steve-o
type my problem is that is when those
series ice bread cold cuts cheese red
wine begin to define no longer an
identity but a French nature and there’s
a long way to go through nature and
identity because when I started using
these two then I begin to exclude what
is not part of this nature and then I’m
not here talking about my national
identity I’m really referring to a
perceived pre-existing French or
national nature that would be
predominantly white Catholic liquor
intensive and unsmiling this is by
weight not just any weekend this is
where I love doing this talk this
morning I am going to quote this is the
next thing I’m doing this afternoon this
is the program of the far right and
today nothing to then who is in very
good standing to exist the second out of
the rough in two weeks we’ll see about
this how did we get here we get here the
reader does read the 14th the assumption
you know he was known as something well
we’re talking about evolution
where what is the Sun the Sun is the
center of the universe
friends in this time was supposed to be
the center of the universe of the white
universities of Europe and then became
an empire that’s that’s the assumption
we are we the French even though we will
say we the people and like Americans
France is a center of universe and it
doesn’t go away this perception with the
instant refurbishing with the money the
Republic of which you are seeing
probably the most famous representation
malian the Liberty as its guiding the
people his sentencing hearing this idea
that France should be the leader of the
free world and an inspiration for the
other nations you seem I am here
thoughtless anymore as she’s colonizing
other countries in North Africa and we
didn’t stop here the assumption is that
France has a message with its national
values that needs to be adopted endorsed
by the colonized countries and this
takes us to today this is from after the
attacks in 2015 where basically the
messages you are welding from France as
descendants of the countries we call
nice but we were here first
we’re going to tell you what your
identity
and your vitality your that is with wish
came from you will kindly lift them with
customs officer this assumption of an
essence of French identity again this is
Billie France nature people really not
really convinced that this is an
identity that is not designed to evolve
its determine its it pre-exists us I
think is an illusion that comes from the
fact that we are evolving but we are
kept before being ever so slowly and so
the people will be in here the native
fresh who have been there for a little
longer and the newcomers there under the
assumption that no we’re not changing
how good we we’re not seeing it day by
day but we are this is the picture from
1976 of the national soccer team I
should really be saying quit born but I
myself am a little a more United than
your story and how about sorry you see
that it is predominantly white four
years down the road last year of the
euro the ratio test is completely
reversed so we are evolving it’s taking
a long time but we are changing and we
are evolving my students know that I am
obsessed with mostly two things two
things define me for good and they with
probably a very good metaphor changes
France is changing not as fast as David
Bowie it doesn’t want to change as fast
but the reason
this is that I think that we are allowed
as individuals and nations to regard our
identities are as fluid complex and
possibly multiple I am wearing something
that has to do with French oh you see
it’s very annoying national very we
think there was sermon you know there
are so many Cougars around also have a
South African vigor a Hindi multi-layers
if I want if I want I can be this
church’s which we have tons thousands
across the national landscape and I can
be this a mosque and it served no
purpose no collective purpose that
people are resisting this type of public
building I think this course the
glorious addition of our esteem holster
offense but I have to accept that I’m
also this I may be living in Paris and
out from on the street under the arches
of subway are three thousand immigrants
were just trying to survive and make
their way into my country I can do this
nothing was a very high figure of
intellectual art via French rapper from
African descent work into this again
probably the best French movie you might
be able to
where does it take us this ever-changing
definition of the French then well I
don’t think we should be guarded as
threats it’s been painted as a threat by
the Linton’s were seeking to capture the
extreme boats but it is really more of
an opportunity you see how tiny this
country is with regard to North America
South America Africa Asia and Russia
there is no way that we as a culture
will have something to save the world
unless we accept to let the world in
and so self-defining
it really is a disease in a way as a
French teacher I am really convinced
that the future of French studies lies
in Franklin service in Africa in the
Caribbean and Latin America and even in
Asia North America this is where the
French bless me looks like today I don’t
even know where the stiff are from what
I know is that the old habit of parents
who wasn’t born in France and this is
the richness of what we have in common
and this is from what defines us
comparative 8zu Americans language we
have this French language that is spoken
in multiple multiple variations
in Paris in southern France in northern
France in Canada in abuja in Mecca in
Hanoi but we will share this language
this is what we have and come in and
this is our legacy to the world this is
what define us this is what can help us
to say we began the French people when
really we are coming from different
perspectives and I might not be willing
to accept that other guy’s identity
and maybe he doesn’t want to accept mine
but this is what we have been known this
is how we can say we this is where the
diverse multi not just multi-ethnic but
also multicultural France might look
like and I end up with a few portraits
of this you knew France
and there you go you have someone who
came very recently who is homeless but
children so she is she’s smiling and you
know it and like a French ambassador she
knows how to show her teeth and this
might be this might be a pretty good
metaphor of the France tomorrow thank
you
