The Neural Connect | Monishwaran Maheswaran | TEDxBMSCE

[Music]
[Applause]
I with the help of my father would open
up for appliances just to look inside
and see how they looked like for me
programming is like a superpower I could
create anything I want I couldn’t make a
machine do whatever I feel like a belief
technology can impact life and
technology is a story about us and how
we change our lives from making the
wheel to modern day computers I begin
coding from a very young age by age 8 I
was fluent in nearly three programming
languages during which a built-in
application that will help me improve my
English discourse a built-in application
to improve my English vocabulary and boy
it was worth it I got a lot I school a
lot more on my next English examination
a couple of years later I was introduced
to the wonderful world of machine
learning and a built in an application
interact with me a companion I call it
saucy I said to myself wow this thing
can make your heart sing for me is very
different when I was in tenth grade I
came across an incident I came across an
accident of a visually impaired person
and this motivated me to do something
for the visually impaired people so I
built an application that will help
guide the visually impaired the device
consists of a camera and earphones and
we understand a computer the cameras
scan the environment and look for
impending dangers like potholes railway
crossings or zebra crossing oh and or
and even also look for known people and
it releases information directly to the
user using natural language in the end I
change the way the visually impaired in
to interact with the surrounding a
belief programming is something that can
change the way we live our lives when I
was young a lot of people complained
about programming a lot of people
believe program is very difficult and
complex this mystified me
so I offered a book a C++ book they
follow an unconventional method of
teaching the book itself is made as a
colonization between an author and a
reader how cool is that this book is
used by several students and professors
out of all my artificial intelligence
projects I have developed a project they
have been working on for a very very
long time a project that has a potential
to completely change the way we interact
with our surroundings I call it the
neural connector to begin I like the old
to think about the word interaction what
comes your mind when I say the word
interaction for me two questions pop up
in my mind why do we interact and
secondly how do we interact since the
dawn of time we have found creative ways
to change the way we interact with each
other and with machines we have invented
their keyboard they can the mouse the
email the text messaging to interact
with each other and with machines now
like you all to take a moment and
imagine a world but there are no
keyboards no touchscreen no mice instead
of which you’d use on your mind to
control things sit there on the lights
chart with a friend or even call a
friend
[Applause]
this technology
could completely change we interact with
each other most of you are familiar with
this century-old technology called the
electroencephalogram or EEG you bring
contains billions of neurons and though
they’re billions in number decreed only
a faint electrical signal on your scalp
these three signals form patterns for
brain waves a custom design EEG headset
could be used to pick up this electrical
activity and send to a machine where it
is analyzed and processed by several
deep learning algorithms that are
building and based on this brainwave
data and output could be determined for
example I turn off lights in the bedroom
before I go to sleep without actually
flicking the switch I could just lie
down on the bed take a deep breath close
my eyes imagine the lights turning off
and it would happen in reality just like
a magical to illustrate this more I have
an activity for you I like you I’d like
you all to solve a problem
what is 7 times 35 the answer is 24 and
5 0 by the way when you are solving this
problem your brain base will look
something similar to this your bear
whenever you’re solving a task you emit
a certain brainwave depending upon the
task itself a neural net can be trained
to predict this particular action based
on this brainwave beta for example I
could relay my thoughts to a computer
without actually typing the device would
look something like this it’s a it’s a
custom 3d printed headset it contains an
electrode there will be placed on a
forehead and the information brainwave
information would be sent to a a
computer or a Raspberry Pi in this case
to be processed and analyzed and the
output could be determined so what can
you do with this technology I’ll then of
course turning off lights calling a
friend or texting a colleague there are
a finite possibilities this innovation
would impact the lives of several people
especially the ones who are disabled for
example professor Stephen Hawking a
brilliant scientist couldn’t communicate
effectively
he suffered from disease called motor
neuron disease so usually a muscle of
only one is Chi a single muscle to
select text from a computer screen and
really in that information directly to
the voice synthesizer which would be
processed and respected and his thoughts
will be spoken out but we don’t need a
technology anymore this technology can
seem the CCT it what professor Hawking
taught it will also speak for pro
photographer hogging as well
I believe we are very close to
decreasing the gap between humans and
machines I believe everyone is very uses
technology in the near future and
everyone are gonna control things while
using the mind and now the big picture I
would like to show you a demonstration
of this innovation as you can see the
headset fits comfortably on the head the
headset is Wireless of course to make it
and I’m gonna show you a mind automated
text message he is gonna control the D
text with one is mind are you ready to
any one of the audience member can come
anybody for the time 346 p.m. 346 yeah I
can take on the decks yeah that’s got it
I wasn’t saying
yeah it says welcome to the future the
new iconic thank you [Applause]
