raise your hand if you could stay up all

raise your hand if you could stay up all
night working until 7:00 in the morning
if it’s something you love raise your
hand if you could stay up all night
working until 7:00 in the morning if
it’s something you love for free I raise
my hand here because I do stay up all
night working until 7:00 in the morning
or sometimes 8:00 in the morning and I
do it for free and I absolutely love it
my name is around and today I’m gonna
talk about the beauty of working for
free I know working for free doesn’t
sound good and sometimes it is not good
I’ve even led a campaign for slaves that
worked against their will and didn’t get
paid
working for free can suck but working
for free willingly can be beautiful
and I have two reasons why to start with
the first one let’s go back in 2012 I
was 20 an exchange student in America
entering at this summer camp and the
kits at the summer camp were so cute
really funny and very energetic like
very energetic and sometimes they’re
really insightful but they were homeless
and there were from low-income families
so the camp took place in a homeless
shelter where some of the kids lived and
I lived there too and living in a
homeless shelter I’m not gonna like
wasn’t the easiest I had no person or
room I had no Wi-Fi I only had one
toilet and one shower to share with 12
other roommates and the food there I
can’t even talk about it but I loved
living there because the kids were so
worth it and I still love them and I
will never forget some of the
conversations I had with them one day it
was with Jayden who was so cute had
really really really big eyes yeah he
had huge eyes and this was our
conversation hey Jayden why didn’t you
come to camp yesterday
mr. Ron I couldn’t why Jaden mr. Ron I
always playing outside and lost my shoes
some like okay so what I could have make
a connection there but looking him in
the eyes I realized that was the only
pair of shoes he had and I’ve never had
only one pair of shoes in my entire life
and losing shoes has never meant for me
losing the opportunity to go outside so
they got me asking why do I have more
than one pair of shoes another day I was
with another kid Jocelyn who was just
really cute she had really awesome
braided hair gorgeous dark skin and
really skinny arms and legs and this was
our conversation hey Jocelyn you should
wash your face in the morning mr. Ron I
do wash my face
no Jocelyn you clearly have stuff on
your face mr. Ron I did wash it I just
couldn’t get it off because I don’t have
soap you don’t have soap and she goes
mr. Ron I’m so happy I’m so happy I get
to live with this awesome homeless
shelter I can eat I can sleep I used to
sleep on the street and I was really
scared and really cold every night and I
thought I might die multiple-time see
because I was so hungry but I can eat
here and that just broke my heart
because I know for a fact that she did
nothing to deserve to be born homeless
and my question was not why does she
have to be homeless my question was why
am I not homeless
what makes it right that she’s born
homeless and I’m not I’ve always at home
I’ve always at food I’ve always at soap
it have always had more than one pair of
shoes and why I just happen to have
parents that
not homeless and I’ve never worked for
my parents I never chose my parents they
were just given to me then why why me
why not her I really needed to know
because I wanted to use what I was given
for the purpose that’s given to me
otherwise I would feel terrible for
having it given to me not them so what’s
the purpose why is it given to me why is
there even a purpose is life just unfair
I had that question for a while and I
think I got the answer we’re given what
we’re given to help make life fair the
things that are given to us are meant to
be shared by us so that means as much as
we’re given we’re also given the
responsibilities and privileges to be
part of making life less unfair this
world depends on the special talents
resources and the personalities that
only you have
to be better and don’t you want a better
world so think about what you’re given I
know it’s easier to focus on what you’re
not given or what you’re given less of
so let’s take a moment now close your
eyes let’s be intentional think of one
thing that you’re given that you didn’t
have to work for it could be your
creativity unique voice language
abilities cute handwriting or your
natural interest in science it could be
anything you’re given something and if
you feel like you’re given nothing
remember you’re given time time to live
that somebody didn’t get today time has
to be given
you cannot buy or earn or achieve time
time has to be given so why is it given
to you not them I don’t know about you
guys but sometimes I waste my time and I
feel like I did not deserve 24 hours a
day I do not deserve a full day because
I waste some part of it but 24 hours a
day have been faithfully and
unconditionally gifted to me which makes
me want to give back somehow
all by at least using 24 minutes a day
and after thinking a lot about what
we’re given for free I realized
something what we’re given for free are
usually more crucial to life than what
we achieve with them it’s a for example
we can live without a clock but we can’t
live without time and we can live it out
a diploma but we can’t live it our brain
and what about our heart we don’t tell
our heart pound pound pound my still
pounds and why why do you have a healthy
free heart that somebody didn’t get I’m
not saying you should be thankful I’m
saying you should be responsible it’s
simple
freely you have received freely give in
freely giving or in other words working
for free can look different for
different people just like some people
work whole time
some people work part-time some people
work from home some people work online
so you can be a full-time student and
still use maybe 24 minutes a day or even
a month reading a blind person a book
with your freely given time freely given
voice and freely give an eye sight so
find something do something with what
you have for free to help others lack
less and it is beautiful it’s beautiful
when you share and care and help the
world become a better place is it going
to build your resume not necessarily it
doesn’t have to it doesn’t have to build
your resume to be beautiful it’s not
about the practicality of working for
free it’s about the beauty of it that’s
enough of a reason but if this is not
convincing here’s something promising
the second reason why working for free
is beautiful
working for free can get you to a better
place or even success and here’s my
experience so after the internship after
the study abroad program I didn’t go
back to school I took a break from
school to be completely devoted to
sharing what I was given and I focused
on what I was most thankful for which
happened to be
people around me needed the most
education so I basically begged people
to let me teach them for free so I
started English classes for college
students book clubs and worldview
discussion groups and so on
it was my full-time job with no pay it
took me two hours to commute every day
but I enjoyed it so much I named my
activities dream because dream dream
means to give in Korean and giving
became my dream but people told me Iran
you should go to school you should make
money why are you helping others build
their resume you should build your own
you’re crazy well it would have been
crazy if I hadn’t done it because doing
it for a year and a half I’ve gained
communication skills leadership skills
and teaching skills
and normally you have to pay to do that
right and interestingly enough that’s
what got me my first paying job as an
English teacher and as an English
teacher I did pretty well I got great
feedback I was making good money and I
got my own education Brent started then
I quit I quit to take another job at
this place called Shiloh home of Hope
which is a home for single moms and
homeless women I was offered to live
there and be their supervisor mentor
with no pay and I took it and people
again told me you’re crazy you’re only
23 you can volunteer when you’re old and
retired but wait why wait to do what’s
beautiful till you’re old and retired so
I fool myself to America well shallow
was and I live there
and created a class on love and
relationships which turned out to be the
coolest thing I could put on my resume
if I wanted and living there I also
happen to teach some foreigners how to
speak English and they were so thankful
which inspired me to teach more online
for free so more people could access
them so that’s what I’ve been doing for
two years now nobody pays me to do it
but it became my career I don’t make
money from my video
but I make money because of my videos
and this is the beauty of it I don’t
make money from my videos but I make
money because of my videos because of my
free videos that are watched over 6
million times I have created such an
amazing community build trust and
practice influence so now TV companies
publishing companies in schools and
different brands and events approached
me and they are willing to pay and isn’t
this working out pretty beautifully this
is not the reason I did it but this is a
result and it’s beautiful working for
free has definitely gotten me to a
better place ok so enough about me let’s
talk about real successful people I know
there is a Korean education company
called talk to me in Korean calm and
when I first found out about it I was
like you’re crazy because they had such
amazing elaborate an excellent Korean
education system for free they had their
videos and PDF files and mp4 files for
free and I’m like why would you do that
for free and I realized it was the most
successful and biggest Korean education
company that exists because of their
free information they’ve attracted over
6 million people and many of them have
now purchased their books and lectures
and the sea of talk to me in Korean that
calm says it wouldn’t have been possible
without their free information so
working for free pays off and another
great example of this is this woman
named curly Chrisman she wanted to work
in the fashion industry but nobody paid
her to do that so she did it for free
she did lots of photo shoots for free
and she even flew herself to host some
fashion events for free she certainly
didn’t make money from them but she now
makes money because of them she proved
herself now she is one of the biggest
fashion influencers and she works with
her dream fashion brands in her advice
for those want to succeed is to work for
free and in this case working for free
doesn’t just mean Val
here you have to do things this shocked
people you have to do things in a way
that people are shocked people can’t
believe you’re doing them for free
because they’re so incredible then
people may think hmmm if this is what
they did for free what if you pay them
let’s give them a chance
so opportunities will come find you and
it’ll be worth it so give it a try try
working for free and experience the
beauty first you get to help other
people lack less and help make life less
unfair and second you end up being a
better person or in a better position it
doesn’t matter if you’re more and drawn
to the responsibility of it or the
possibility of it freely you have
received freely give will it always be
practical tech now will it always be
beautiful hekia I’m not a saint and I
don’t have a PhD this is not the result
of a large study or a message that will
automatically be clear to everyone but I
believe this is an idea and a lifestyle
worth spreading
thank you
