The Art within AR & VR | Alireza Bahremand | TEDxASU

hello my name is ali reza Behrman I’m a
research aide for dr. Robert Lee kumoi
at Arizona State University’s meteor
studio meteor studio consists of
engineers focused on pushing the
boundaries of hardware and software and
mobile devices for both modern and
future use at meteor studio I work
within the virtuality continuum but for
simplicity sake I’m gonna refer to this
the same way Microsoft and other
companies have the mixed reality
spectrum this spectrum encompasses all
possible combinations and variations of
both real and virtual objects within
this spectrum a range of experiences can
occur such as augmented reality which
involves overlaying digital artifacts on
real-world objects and then virtual
reality which is a complete digital
environment that occludes the users view
I find this field of technology very
captivating but what I think you might
find interesting is how I got in this
just as many of my friends I want to
know what am I doing with my life at the
time I had no sense of direction and no
goals that I was working towards through
deep thought I came to the conclusion I
have a very strong interest to enable
people through technology the motivation
for this interest was based on advice I
was given from a very inspiring software
engineer named max Wiesel he said go
towards what’s most novel and
interesting to you in other words find
what enables you so that you can enable
others this philosophy has driven me on
a continuous pursuit to push boundaries
and I’d like to share with you how it’s
influenced my life for me the journey
begins with art since childhood drawing
was my medium for expression
I admire drawing because I could capture
my emotion towards someone or something
within a moment’s time and in that time
of drawing all my focus is adhered to
the shapes lines and distance of point
on paper it was very soothing by
investing time and effort into sketches
I could gift them to others to let them
know I appreciate them and in my
experience it seemed that no matter the
person art resonates well each sketch
served as my research to create the
illusion of three-dimensional moments
using all but two dimensions this
research came to an end however when my
friends introduced me to Google’s tilt
brush tilt brush is a virtual reality
art application that allows you to draw
in space and as I drew my first
three-dimensional brushstroke I knew
that this is what I want to put forth my
time and effort I spent weeks in virtual
reality
playing games developing minigame
and building and designing virtual
immersive environments one of my most
fond memories was creating a virtual
depiction of my mother’s garden for her
birthday I want to further develop this
skill so I began surrounding myself with
in a community of virtual artists I
could see their work explore it and
learn from their techniques furthermore
I can overlay my perspective on it by
remix in it and it became a form of
expressive collaboration which is the
case here with artist Paige dancing Gers
community garden there’s all sorts of
enjoyable stuff in the virtual world
it’s consumable interactive and user
friendly I wanted so badly to bring
these creations into the real world now
the act of coding belongs in the real
world
and at that time augmented reality
software frameworks libraries of code
have become well-documented and open to
the public
I was curious to see if this these
software frameworks would allow me to
move my virtual creations along that
mixed reality spectrum in hindsight it’s
obvious that virtual assets can be
imported into augmented reality settings
but I can’t emphasize how magical of a
moment it was when I did this in my own
room with a physical magazine and
virtual drawing of musician rick ross by
doing this i was given a new form of art
manipulating realities and i want to
further explore it you see the mixed
reality spectrum became the bridge i
needed to connect my college education
with my personal skills i was given a
new set of tools to utilize for both
academic and personal projects which is
the case here with my senior capstone
this became a refreshing way to you
this type of technology and I want to
keep going with it
so I ran with granular ideas take
everyday parts to take parts of everyday
life and try to mix its reality so for
example movie posters by coding some
form of interaction in augmented reality
and drawing virtual assets that relate
to a film movie posters can now become
mixed reality experiences and this was
such an energizing way to use this
technology and I want to share it
so I began working with others to create
these types of mix to reality
experiences it felt like I was finding
an intersecting point of what I love and
what others love
however after all these projects a
problem came to surface itself I was
still in the same position I had no
directions and no goals that I was
working to achieve I pushed myself so
far into unfamiliar territory then I was
lost as I further developed my personal
skills I push my boundaries which is
denoted here with that dashed line and
that boundary for me at this point in
time is the way mixed reality technology
is currently used there are many
problems to be addressed within this
boundary and it takes many disciplines
to solve these problems in college we
each choose a specific major a specific
discipline therefore in this scenario a
college education can be represented
with a lopsided oval meaning our focus
is catered in specific direction to
further narrow down my focus I’ve been
rolled into the master’s program beyond
this I will pursue a PhD to which I
shall be clear focus on the problem I
want to solve research challenges
convention challenging convention pushes
boundaries which can in turn birth
innovation and in case you didn’t know
a su we know a thing or two about
innovation jokes aside a su is a very
welcoming school for research
the theory program introduced me to
research and allow me to scope on my
interests and create goals for myself my
research by the way involves using
augmented reality and internal sensors
on mobile devices to spatially
understand the user’s physical
environment in parallel a virtual
environment can be conformed to meet the
demands of the users physical space so
in layman’s terms
I’m studying how to confine physical
movement for free world exploration and
virtual reality my goals are to assist
in the collective effort of pushing this
technology’s boundaries and integrating
it into educational settings I strongly
believe that mixed reality will broaden
the horizon of people skills and
interests and by doing this I can
continue following my philosophy find
what enables you so that you can enable
others and I’d like to act on this I’ve
created this short but sincere virtual
web page to thank you for your time so
I’d like to invite you all to take your
phones out
open up your cameras and we’re going to
point it at the QR code on the screen
it’s going to open up a web page
notification so please do follow that
and if this doesn’t work then please do
follow the link below the goal of this
is to show you the potential influence
of makes reality run or college campus
and I hope that this talk this
philosophy this technology can inspire
you to push your boundaries to new realities thank you
