TEDx in a Polish High School | Alina Małocha | TEDxKazimierz

[Music]
Ted and TED talks are very important to
me they’ve had a significant event in my
life for me a regular frustration is
having friends acquaintances family
members for whom Ted is not important
who do not care who do not understand
who do not bother to open the links I
send them so imagine how happy I felt
when a group of students I teach
demanded the TED Talks be part of our
special study hours how would you feel
if those friends were not into Ted
started asking that you tell them about
your favorite talks I’m going to tell
you how and why TED Talks became a
significant part of the way I teach and
why this is an idea worth spreading
first let me tell you who I am and what
I do I’m an English teacher in a second
Driscoll in rockcastle it’s a small town
of 13,000 people 80 kilometres south of
Krakow I first heard about TED Talks 5
years ago and since then I’ve been
hooked on them I would listen to 3 TED
Talks during my regular workout sessions
and longer walks it meant that I looked
forward to my fitness sessions which
otherwise I might avoid I brought TED
Talks to class obviously I love TED
Talks for the very many small changes
they introduced into my life for
inspiration for widening my perspective
I love listening to people and Ted
speakers and great people to listen to
they are my kind of remedy for when I
feel lazy and demotivated I would bring
TED Talks to class and tell my students
about my favorite any cadiz body
language shapes who you are and power
posing suspending in a posture of
confident confidence even if you don’t
feel confident and how this may affect
the way you feel about yourself and how
it may affect
your chances for success I even made
them do power posing before being up for
it for a maths test I don’t know whether
it worked then I had an idea why not
find an educational activity that would
get my students watching some TED Talks
maybe they would like them the way I did
in 2015 I set my students a task they
had to choose a TED talk record a three
four minute summary of it and in their
own words obviously and in English and
send it to me that was just a homework
assignment
so it was not making a speech not
popping speak not public speaking just a
recording of their own voices great idea
well not at first
some students what the idea was not very
well received by the students some just
select the refused others were too shy
to record their voices there were some
who did the talk but in fact read the
transcript which I had told him they
were not allowed to do some
procrastinated till I slip it into
oblivion
I didn’t one came and did it face to
face with me we know most of them did it
some of the benefits were obvious
learnings and presentation skills
learning to tolerate the often strange
sound of a recording of your own voice
learning that TED Talks could be a great
and new source of information learning
to speak so that you understood with a
focus on pronunciation and finally the
pleasure of personalized learning
that’s choosing the counter letting the
students choose the content that is they
favorite talk other benefits for now
that office mokou I one of my students
surprised me it came to class and he
wanted to share something with us
something that inspired him he suggested
we should watch yatsenko valeriy just
talk TEDx talk
that Multiversity he said that his mom
he told us his mom watched it whenever
she felt in the rods and burned out we
watched it together this inspirational
talk can be roughly summarized in two
sentences you can fear your challenges
but you have to take them on you have to
step outside the comfort zone and
fulfill your dreams
we watched other talks together watching
the talks together of my students gave
them their a+ shared experiences it
shared experiences are the bedrock of
shaping human culture so in this way
some of my favorite talks became part of
their culture they opened up they
started talking more they reflected some
comments followed
so he started started relating to the
ideas embedded in the talks for me as a
teacher that kind of experience does not
happen every day another thing what I
learned is persistence if you even if
people say no and you believe in your
idea you have to press on students do
benefit from high expectations and the
activity was hard but I knew but it made
it worthwhile and rewarding as they
succeeded then I had another idea in
2016
I set my students another task they were
to come to class with the summaries of
TED Talks they wash at home and present
them not like in the previous activity
at home to a microphone by themselves
but in front of me and their classmates
they were also instructed to express the
opinion about the talks they were
presenting i assess them on criteria
like model language length delivery
accuracy and how well they express 380s
some of them found it really hard to
manage their stage points
but obviously by doing the activity they
learned by doing and started overcoming
their nerves
and became more positive another benefit
of the project then then there was
another idea but before that it is very
hard to find an unlimited supply of
inspiring speakers in rap Catherine in
cash English maybe in Krakow
this is the challenge teachers face this
project of this activity made my
students aware of the fact they have
access to the best and most inspiring
speakers in the world thanks to TED
Talks
then another idea followed I decided in
2017 to take it one step further and I
gave students an option of writing and
presenting their own TEDx talk not just
a summary the real thing that’s a lot to
ask
believe me we had a red carpets we got
some lighting and me how one of my
students came with a TEDx sign he made
three of my students were brave enough
to take on the challenge
this forced them to do to do more
research this got them discussing this
got them familiar with a wide range of
video ideas available on the Internet
not just silly cats and emotive Atari
there are 16 students from my school in
the audience today they have given up
the Saturday paid for the tickets and
came here just to be with us like an a
proud teacher I could tell you more
about the positive impact but I think
it’s better for some of the students to
tell you themselves in their own words
please join me on stage Nico I Nijo
Carol and fellow
[Applause]
my name is Babu my own TEDx talk was
called Planet X and when I told my
friends they got really interested and
curious they even started researching my
topic on their own now I recommend now I
recommend TED Talks as a source of
inspiration to everyone one day my
friend Roddick told me that he
transformed the way he listens all that
thanks to Julian treasures TED talk
so I’m Miho and the most memorable TED
Talks for me were related to nature and
the environment
my favorite tox showed inventors and the
ideas connected with natural
conservation
I wasn’t expecting to get interested in
how technology can actually impact
environmental issues but now I’m
considering studying at this field this
TED project may well change my life what
I got out of it is it’s a hunt that
every single person can change our world
for better even with tiny steps or our
small initiatives you don’t have to be a
genius to create something worthwhile
it takes passion determination and work
this TED Talks got me motivated to work
and study harder and explore the world
[Applause]
my name is Miko I and when we got the
task I got run to it like a typical
student I tried to find the shortest and
the easiest version listening through a
few questions listen if you a few
speakers sorry I asked myself where do
all those speakers find motivation and
inspiration to the Finks then I remember
a quotation if you want something you
find a way if you don’t you find the
reason being in the last year of
secondary school this year I had school
living ball which is called Tunica
tradition in ours our school is to
prepare a perform one friend of mine
suggested a boys-only dance everybody
liked it but nobody did anything so the
idea beat the dust and a week before the
event
all those inspiring Ted speakers came to
my mind and with them I desire to
inspire my friend what followed was few
calls a few rehearsals and the success
what I learned it’s that it’s worth
looking for the inspirations and the TED
Talks
are a great source of it
my name is Carl if somebody had told me
two years ago that I would be standing
here on the red car the red car on the
red carpet in front of 400 people
telling them about this project I would
have told them that this impossible I
was far too shy thanks to this project I
can do something that I would have
thought was unreachable for me thank you
I had yet another idea I learned about
Ksenia TEDx event I asked my students
what I would like to go and they were
interested so I wrote a letter until
contact at TEDx Kashmir’s come me how
suggested we send a photo and he joked
that they would want us on stage we had
no idea that he was 100 centroids
Richard foot blind the next day we spoke
on the phone and he encouraged us to
think of giving a talk and now we are
here what other lessons have we learned
one idea leads to another had I um had I
asked my students to come with me to
TEDx Ksenia three years ago I might be
here long
inspiration and innovation take place
step by step what I could tell you more
about the positive positive impacts of
this why and how did Richard encourage
chance didn’t give a talk and why he
thought that this project was important
enough to be worthy of a TEDx talk I
have told you about great education and
the character building effect it had on
my students and we really enjoyed it
enormously you can say apart from our
time work and commitment he could say
that the project was almost free in
financial terms well it cost as you can
see 20 zlotys
this is the equivalent of five years
what does that mean it means that any
school in wrapp Castro in cash in Krakov
in Poland any school in any country
and/or in the world can do something
like that we hope this is an idea worth
spreading
thank you
thank you
