TCK Design | Hangna Koh | TEDxRobina

so what you just saw was my final
project for post-grad this year and I’m
gonna come back to it a little bit I
wanted to start with Kenia Hara he’s
this amazing graphic design and curator
who explains that to know something is
not a goal but a starting point of your
imagination that we have to unknown
something so I wanted to introduce
myself a little bit my name is Hannah
and I’m what you call a third culture
kid that’s a massive code up there but
it’s someone who spent a significant
part of that adolescent life outside
their parents culture me so my father a
South Korean my mother is half Japanese
when nationality is Korean but I was
born in Japan I was in Japan until I was
7 years old and then my family and I
moved down to Australia for the next 10
years they went back but I stayed in
between these two countries for the next
five years I then moved to the UK for
the next five years where I graduated my
17th school this summer now I’m back in
Japan working and today I’m back in
Australia for TEDx Riverina
Oh so to me I think I’m this I’m 3/4
Korean quarter Japanese my blood but I
kind of feel more Australian inside I
call you UK home so I felt most
comfortable there but I’m kind of like
in Japan for the first time now so when
I meet someone new and I introduce
myself I tend to get cut off by this
phrase oh yeah I know I know
and then something really random like
you must feel so weird about North Korea
this I know I know phrase was pointed
out by Kenia Hara and it just kind of
stuck with me I came across it in his
book X formation and it means
understanding how little we know
I started crushing when I really meant
to know something so why is this phrase
I know I know such a huge conversation
stopper why are we so afraid to look
uninformed there’s been so many great
changes great talked about need to
change that the school system isn’t
working and we need to find new ways but
honestly nothing has really changed so I
decided to do something on my own and I
applied these two questions to design
and fashion because I learned that
they’re both really powerful their
historical their self expressive and
they tell really deep stories so
thinking about this medium I came across
this theory by Marshall McLuhan that the
medium is the message that the medium is
what
ultimately defines what we see and how
we think I feel like feeling things
physically and emotionally and actually
being present somewhere is really
important that frankly we’re slowly
losing I wanted to highlight this
meaningful time in between point A and
point B when gaining information but
actually that’s applies to everything so
the medium today is digital technology
and my medium I went a little bit
against it and I made an analogue
labyrinth something could just look
physically walking to an elaborate is
historically and culturally known as a
search within itself and a path to home
so I applied that as a metaphor to
explore what a third culture kid is so
when you enter this labyrinth you accept
that you don’t know anything because
when you enter you don’t acknowledge
that if you can imagine then that will
open you up to understand in exchange
and gain information so I wanted to
creatively change the way we inform
through people’s imagination hidden in
this labyrinth that you saw earlier are
six garments is I my Simon Peters that
all represent different stages in a
story that I wrote there you can hear
them all whispering and the author of my
voice all at the same time I built solid
looking high walls that were actually
really soft and fragile when he touched
them and they would even move when he
walked by there’s a mannequin in there
with massive metal rings attached to its
neck and both these walls and mannequins
we become more and more slowly
reflective as you walk through in the
end you would be reflected how these are
interpreted start with your imagination
I’m gonna replay that video again and I
want you to apply your imagination this
what could you imagine this time to the
height of the walls remind you some
certain feeling could you guess
something about my past with the way
that the ganas were designed so going
back to the medium is the message we
fill in the gap between what we don’t
know with digital information and that’s
creating a wall between you and other
people and I admit I did the same thing
sometimes but if you’re able to imagine
this wall will slowly fade away and that
is the beginning process of Unknowing
something and you’re and the presence
being present will help you gain an
exchange and understand real information
just as your presence here does today so
let’s stop googling what a third culture
kid is and continuing on with empty
statements like you’ve barely been to
Korea you don’t know the language so you
can’t be Korean that statement does not
make sense it never has and never should
and it never will trust me
so what is creative change is
imagination to me it’s being able to
open up and I know something and imagine
but beyond what you think you already
know and what you see that will
ultimately lead you to discover
something completely new and real design
is universal and there’s no language
there’s no language barrier and it
reminds you that it’s okay for the
complex needs to remain complex just
remember when you were a child again
when you used to imagine so invite you
all today to start imagining get out
there and discover and make sure that
you stay curious let’s all have the courage to know something
