Struggles of a daughter | Beenish Shehan | TEDxNUSTKarachi

in the auditorium Salaam alaikum and a
very very good evening to everybody
who’s here I see some familiar faces
salaam alaikum sir how are you
I want to take this opportunity to you
know tell you guys how humble I feel
that I have this stage and I have this
opportunity to share my story with with
everyone I think it’s a great platform
to let you guys know what my story is
all about the weather in Karachi is
pretty nice it’s quite nice these days
don’t you think you know we people in
Karachi don’t usually get to experience
winter that early so I think it’s the
perfect time to share a little story
with you guys a story about a 70 year
old girl who whose world changed and it
turned upside down in just a single day
she woke up one morning and went to
school thinking you know it’s a regular
day I’m gonna come back home thinking
home will be the same family is going to
be the same everything’s gonna be the
same but little did she know that life
was not actually going to be the same
things would change when she would come
back home that girl is me my name is
Venus Rehan
and I’m really really proud to tell you
all that I am the daughter of the
Pakistan television legend late Salim
Nasir Khan
we lost him too soon but it’s been
almost three decades and the pain is
there but I feel good about myself
standing you know on this stage sharing
this platform with so many amazing
amazing people I was only seven when my
father passed away at an age where I was
too young to understand what you know
life was really all about what was you
know in store for me but the fighter
that I was the Pathan that I was in the
true sense I stood up I gathered myself
together and you know my journey began
from there and it’s been 28 years almost
three decades the journey has been
amazing the journey has been very tough
and after a lot of hurdles and after
having to hear a lot of mean things by a
lot of people who sometimes try to cut
you short in life I think we’ve all been
through that at some point in life I
stand here today feeling good I feel
like I’ve achieved something that I want
to share with with with you all so my
dad had great influence in my life of
course a legend we saw him as a person
at home a father you know on screen off
screen he was just amazing you know one
of those superhuman people that you come
across in life so he had a great
influence in my life but there was one
more person who
played a really integral role in shaping
my future and that’s my mother so she
did that through many ways she did that
sometimes through the warm hugs that I
moms give us sometimes with her Don you
know we’ve all had dart episodes and
sometimes she would also do that with
her typical Pakistani a male lion come
jackaroo galati’s in the game a I think
we’ve all been through that right now
Maria Maya Casey point pair kanina can
he leave they’ve said that to us right
and out of all the lessons that my
mother taught me there were these famous
three C’s of life which stuck with me
like glue and they were not just the
famous three C’s but they were actually
a way of life it was choice chance and
changed and she said to me she would
always say that not just to me but my
sister and my brother as well she would
say that make one thing of your choice
and stick to it
make sure no matter where you want to go
where you have to go no matter what you
have to do in order to achieve it make
sure you achieve it and when you finally
achieve your goal make sure to make way
for other people and give them a chance
the chances that you once had and change
is just going to come automatically for
the better of course life is never going
to be the same it’s never stagnant the
moment that I’m standing here right now
is never going to really come back right
it’s it’s never the same but you just
have to sort of fit yourself somewhere
in there and just go with the flow so
here I am and there I was with my little
but very heavy
Pokhara of a market Dean sees juicing
the gimmick Arachnia which just like I
said stuck with me like glue so I
started off my career in 2005 it was a
radio career for some of you my voice
might be a little familiar I’ve done
radio for 12 years and 12 long years it
seems like a really really long
but twelve fun years it was something I
liked doing and one fine day I just
decided of course we all have dreams of
our own and we want to pursue them and
we want to conquer the world and we’re
going to bring about a change and
everyone wakes up every morning thinking
the same thing right I also wanted to do
that I wanted to be like freshly Bharata
because a bajas or jo seho
it’s never a legend he was such a big
legend so obviously you know it was one
of those things where I used to often
say to myself every morning that you
could Scott Myers in big email so I had
my own dreams and after 12 long years of
radio again that is another story for
another day
but after 12 long years of doing radio I
just got up one day and I quit I quit
radio what I loved I loved radio and I
just left it of course there’s a lot of
other things in the middle that you know
I did teaching and I did a bit of little
bit of television and I left it but
thanks to my friends and family and the
support system that I had and the famous
three C’s in my life I managed to launch
my own company and it’s a bit too soon
to tell you about what it is but maybe
you can find me on Facebook someday and
find out more about what my company is
all about but yes the point why I’m
telling you this is that I achieved what
I wanted to do in life I achieved my
goal and this is where I will apply
those famous three C’s I will make I
will try and make good choices I will
try and
chances and make way for others because
that’s what we do right we go to the top
and we start cutting everyone short I
don’t want to be one of them I want to
be someone who gives other people a
chance because of all the chances that I
had in life and bring about a change I’m
going to keep it short and to the point
I know I asked some coffee talk ever be
here so you know I just want to really
stick to what what the point really is
my point here is that always always tell
yourself that life is it’s a roller
coaster and like me who’s standing in
front of you an example it will be tough
it’s going to be very difficult they’re
going to be days where you will feel
like I can’t do this anymore
but like me I had a great support system
my friends and family who would give me
like a vodka start we’ve all we all get
this daca start don’t we come are your
friends or family Joe from drama-queen
Bandra Thames and we become a total
drama queen and we’re like oh I can’t do
this in life I can’t do this you know
it’s it’s not possible they are the ones
who actually stand up and push you and
give you that little vodka start to kind
of achieve what you want to achieve in
life and I was really blessed I had a
mom who was a superhuman by the way
please tell everybody I finally found
superwoman in Pakistan
it’s my mother she I’m telling you she
has powers some kind of powers which she
gave me and you know it gives me the
confidence to stand here today of course
my father my friends and family and now
my husband and my best friend who sort
of brings me back on track when I when I
tried to go off-roading which I
we really enjoy I enjoy off-roading
sometimes but to sum it all up I just
want to tell you guys that remember
always always tell yourselves in life
they will be days where you will feel
like you’re crashing you will feel like
you know your legs are shaking you will
feel like you know you can’t stand on
your two feet anymore because of what
the world around you really is and
you’ll feel like you’re crashing and
coming down and falling don’t be afraid
to fall don’t be afraid to lose because
what is more important is how you get
back up after you’ve fallen down and
conquer the world thank you so much
ladies and gentlemen it’s been an
absolute pleasure [Applause]
