Slowing The Sixth Extinction | Tony Brown | TEDxVail

[Music]
I want to begin by sharing a love story
with you boy meets girl story it’s been
decades in the making and it still
doesn’t have an ending yet it all began
when I was a boy growing up in England I
spent my holidays exploring hedgerows
and woodlands and they were so rich with
life I fell completely in love with
nature I wanted to spend all my time
learning everything there was to know
about her then I grew up I became an
architect texure was really exciting to
me I really loved deer of creating
Olding as a people and it became my new
passion and yes I forgot all about my
first love then later I discovered that
I was the one who was destroying nature
every project had brought in bulldozers
and earthmovers to crush the life out of
nature I had no idea what to do then I
met this man Paolo Soleri it’s an
architect philosopher and a visionary
designing sustainable cities so my wife
thing so we actually went and ended up
in the middle of nowhere but he did show
me that design can’t save nature and so
we need four stories we tell ourselves
really create our reality so we need a
new story that tells us that humans our
nature can only thrive together so I
want you to close your eyes get
comfortable and relaxed
and just start imagining imagine living
in the city and waking to birdsong
instead of traffic noise imagine imagine
breathing clean air blowing through
trees and shrubs and billow and vines on
and around your building
imagine the hum of insects as they
pollinate flowers right outside the door
and the flickering beauty of butterflies
instead of escaping to nature we can
actually live in nature
[Music]
sadly that’s not our reality so I want
you to open your eyes and let’s face our
reality together so the Living Planet
report has shown a devastating 58
percent decline in species over just the
last 40 years and worse predicts a 70
percent decline by the end of the decade
another really long-term study has shown
that the insects have declined recently
by 78% so why is this scary because
nature I mean insects pollinate plants
they pollinate our crops they feed fish
birds bats and each other they aerate
our soil and they they recycle animal
wastes Paula Nano like ever another way
of describing how much danger we are in
so imagine that an ecosystem is an
aeroplane imagine each of the rivets is
a species that’s holding it together now
as the plane flies as it if it lose it’s
a couple of rivets it’s no big deal
the plane keeps flying but then as more
rivets begin to fail the plane begins to
have problems and then some critical
point the whole we lose more enough
rivets and the whole thing collapses and
we have a disaster and we are losing too
many rivets we the data shows that we
are in the midst of the sixth greatest
extinction on this planet the other five
were caused by natural forces this one
was caused by us
human land use is a major cause of this
extinction and we’ve already damaged
almost two-thirds of the planets land
area for our uses an urbanization is one
of those uses we take pristine complex
ecosystems and turn them into roads and
gas stations and parking lots and strip
malls and sprawling developments
sufficient years and we actually reverse
this damage and the answer is yes we can
but instead of separating ourselves from
nature we need to invite nature to
coexist with us nature wants to live
with us but we just keep pushing her
away here’s one example of what we could
do this is a building in Japan by Emilio
and bars and as you can see he covered
the whole surface of the building with a
parkland while the building is still for
human use but I realized that the plants
alone are not an ecosystem so I asked
myself what more do we need to do so I’m
working on a project to show that humans
and nature can live together working to
try and create a building that acts like
a forest that collects cleans its own
water
the sequester’s carbon by locking it
into the structure and use it sunlight
for its energy and like a forest it
creates a multi-species habitat will
invite bats to live in it by creating
attic spaces that will make perfect
roosting sites will have open walkways
so the humans in the building have to go
outside into nature to get from place to
place birds will live in Nets nesting
sites built right into the structure of
the building and we have spaces where
will encourage swallows to build their
mud nests
we desperately need insects so we’ll
provide nesting spaces for them around
wars in pollinator gardens planted with
native flowers so the big question is
can we be a little with nature yes we
can but we have to stop being afraid of
nature for example there are so many
crazy myths about bats that we can only
see them as carrion and dangerous like
this in fact they’re really really cute
see I knew unite and love nature so just
want to ask you to imagine one more
thing imagine whole neighborhoods that
are oases for birds and insects and
wildlife where every single building
becomes a part of a new urban ecology
this is a proposal by Stefano berry to
be built in China so we really want you
to believe that we can make this happen
so how well you ought to become an
advocate for nature and bringing it into
all the projects proposed in your city
or town work towards stopping the
spraying of insecticides and herbicides
in your neighborhoods if you’re a
designer work towards making nature your
most important client and bringing
nature into your project we’ve got to
spread the word that we have to cherish
and live with every single species on
this planet why because saving nature is
saving ourselves so let’s all work
together to slow this sixth extinction
reverse it and make a wonderful ending
for our love story thank you
