imagine a time when you turned in a
classroom
not this this I’m gonna be honest with
you I used to fall asleep in the class
myself no doubt blackboards
have is one of the most revolutionary
education tools ever invented but that
was in 1801 surely we’ve replaced
blackboards with interactive whiteboards
but the concept is the same
we still have students sat in a class
facing a screen or a Bourdon of all
keeping a student interested meant the
teacher would call the student to the
front of the class to for example
answer an english question or solve a
math problem for what about the rest of
the class how could the teacher keep the
whole class engaged
we just want students standing at the
front the problem is getting students to
pay attention has been a challenge
throughout the years students learn at
different paces and they have different
progress rates students sometimes don’t
even understand the subject that’s being
taught and if they do they find it hard
to retain the knowledge teachers often
find it hard to identify and deal with
the educational needs of the students so
my question is in a time where Google’s
your doctor Alexa helps you play movies
rivalry between robots like Siri on
katana is a thing why are we still
sticking to the same concept of learning
don’t you think is time we change that
set of nana’s try and imagine the
possibilities of being able to learn in
different ways altogether how many of
you remember this Knight Rider I
absolutely loved the red LED light at
the front of the car I actually
installed them on my dad’s car without
him knowing about it
every time he used to drive the car the
lights used to come on and it was just
so amazing
until we of course he found out well at
least he was a coolest dad driving the
car in town until he decided to remove
it
the most exciting part by the car was
that not only could he drive by itself
but you were able to communicate with it
like a normal human well I would have
loved this technology in my dad’s car
sadly it didn’t exist at the time from
self-driving cars to personal voice
assistants found in our smartphones we
are now surrounded by this technology
this is called artificial intelligence
anyone remember this wasn’t he KITT KITT
yes KITT correct the matrix now this was
a movie where characters were
transported into a simulated virtual
world where they were able to explore
and interact with their surroundings
well this is something we can experience
using VR headsets and this is virtual
reality I remember um I was fascinated
by Holograms growing up and I watched a
Star Wars Episode 4 movie where r2d2
overlaid a holographic image of a
character into the real world I thought
that was amazing I didn’t even know that
was possible
well we can experience this using a our
headsets and smart devices and this is
augmented reality so as you can see
science fiction movie makers have been
predicting the changes that intelligent
and immersive technologies can bring
into our lives for decades I remember as
a kid we had this poster in our
classroom which showed us a solar system
it took me a while to memorize all the
planets I mean they all look like
marbles to me scattered around in space
with no logical purpose what sir Fatah
was a ring doing around Saturn in space
is that something you would want to give
to the person you want to marry don’t
worry I won’t be proposing on stage
today
just in case so anyway I couldn’t work
out how the solar system works until a
school decided to take us on a trip to
the Science Museum now I was able to see
a 3d model of the solar system I was
able to identify the planets and read
more information about them I could see
how they were organized it was actually
very very interesting experience it
started to make more sense yes yes I
know I was slow at school it took me a
trip to the museum to actually
understand how the solar system works
well guess what everyone’s got a chance
they should give you hope I was so
inspired by this trip to the museum that
I decided to make my own 3d model of the
solar system for my science project
believe it or not I actually won an
award for the best project in my science
class it was one of my proudest moments
to this very day so I managed to acquire
just over a year ago my own AR had set
devised or wanted reality device what do
you think was the first application I
launched as soon as I put it on it was
the solar system application called
Explorer it made me feel as if I’m
actually present I’m actually there I
was able to zoom in interact with the
planets I could read and even hear more
information about them in fact he was a
closest I came to the Sun it was a very
immersive experience something I can
still remember today so what I’m trying
to say we’re in the 21st century
and we need to look at ways of changing
the way we provide learning to our
students by using the latest
technologies available to us humans love
sticking to what the familiar with only
few of us welcome change for example
when an IT guy comes into the office to
install a computer but then you have
those that dislike change altogether
maybe it’s because we feel comfortable
doing things the way we used to well you
do realize technology has evolved
around us over the last decade it’s
already made its way into our lives and
he’s here to stay we should find ways of
utilizing this technology to our benefit
if I gave you a choice between a regular
phone and a smartphone which one would
believe it or not most of the people
that now own smartphones now also have
smart homes classroom is a place that
has very minimally evolved and I have no
idea why we should settle for less if
anything we should find ways of making
the whole experience more fun engaging
and exciting I believe there are three
things that technology is changing
around us firstly is the flexibility of
learning the way in which learners are
able to learn which means being able to
alter the pace place and mode of
learning secondly is the ways the
learners are able to gain knowledge and
finally there’s a fundamental change in
the ability of the learners to interact
with other individuals from all over the
world garry kasparov said in a recent
TED talk human plus machine isn’t the
future it’s the present and is quite
right we have already seen how
technology has impacted learning through
a number of web platforms that give
learners the opportunity to increase
their knowledge by using by giving them
access to a huge library of massive open
online courses called MOOCs we are now
seeing intelligent and immersive
technology spread around us at a faster
pace so how can we use these
technologies to enhance a learning
experience
what could be done to overcome the
challenges that we face and take
learning to a new level how can we make
the whole experience fun practical and
engaging well
allows the teachers to find gaps in the
teachings and understand where the
students are struggling by using AI
platforms that collect student-teacher
interaction data from millions of
lessons for example the system will
detect if a student’s reaction to a
certain concept is following a pattern
of misunderstandings and it will give
early warning to the teachers in in
order to avoid from any problems
happening in future there are AI based
tutoring systems available that use
machine learning to provide personalized
guidance to the teachers to the students
they will monitor students responses to
questions and use the feedback that they
gain to determine the best path to
follow to make them understand a
particular subject well AI can also help
teachers create text books and exercises
that are customized to the needs of the
specific causes and students this is
done by using AI platforms that use deep
learning algorithms by importing
syllabus and material this with interest
engine and using the gain knowledge to
create customized content via for
virtual reality can help teachers create
virtual scenarios for students to learn
from them for example they can learn and
improve the language skills VR can also
promote group learning where students
can communicate with other students and
teachers in a virtual world they can
actually interact with other students
and teachers can put them through
certain complex scenarios and guide them
through their experiences it’s changing
by itself or didn’t do that anyway
advancing to healthier AR which we’re
moving on to now the raw AR apps
available where you can get the student
to put a smart device in front of a
printed image and you will see the 3d
object pop-up it gives the learners a
better opportunity to learn
or about a particular subject and this
can be used in multiple areas there are
also apps available that allow learners
to for example solve math problems there
are for example in this I didn’t do that
sorry it’s changing by itself sorry the
learners can take a picture of a math
equation and put it through this app and
it will give you a breakdown of the
solution with a our teachers can guide
the students through a particular
concept where the student would be
wearing an AR headset and the teacher
can basically mark up and draw on a live
video feed through the smart device I
remember I used something similar with
my ear headset do you know what I used
before I used it to learn to cook for
the first time in my life
how is wearing this AR headset in my
kitchen and a friend of mine was guiding
me remotely as I was cooking out my as I
was following instructions I didn’t have
any youtube or anything else available
to me it was actually very interesting
experience to be honest food didn’t
really taste too bad so I’m impressed
with ar we can also change the
environment for the learners around them
we can make them feel that they’re part
of the experience for example we can
bring a part of history into the
learners current environment where they
can interact with it and learn more from
it or we can transport the learners all
the way to a different planet so they
can explore the surroundings
for example Mars I must say it’s
probably the quickest and easiest way to
get to Mars I would add that to a travel
list and very interesting and exciting
as well we can use AR to train staff in
various industries for example in
aviation we can train staff by putting
them through simulated interactive
copied environments all through cabin
walkthroughs AR can also help students
learn more about engineering by putting
them through a certain scenario where
they carry out a repair for example in
this picture you can see an engineer who
has a headset and he has access to this
holographic content
bit like Minority Report he will have
documentation manuals video tutorials
and even a remotely connected session by
an engineer while they carry out the
repair so it’s easy for them to learn I
had the opportunity to attend the
augmented reality conference last year
in Germany and I remember there was a
representative from a major beverages
company and he was sharing his
experience and he was talking about a
machine that they used to use a very
important function he used to do it had
failed now for them to fix it they had
to fly an engineer over from different
part of the world
which meant not only would it incur huge
costs but it would mean made the
downtime now that’s not something the
company could afford do you know what
they did instead they got one of their
own staff to wear this air headset
device and they were remotely guided by
the engineer to carry out the repair
believe it or not they were up and
running in less than two hours something
that could have taken a week or longer
and they were really happy that they
diplom nted augmented reality technology
so that’s just one example as you can
see the possibilities are endless and
the benefits of incorporating
intelligent and immersive technologies
into the learning experiences of the
students include better learning more
immediate engagement collaboration and
interactivity students can now fill the
experiences and better remember and
express what they learned teachers can
create scenarios for learners to
interact with and gauge the level of
understanding students are now able to
record their experiences and revisit
them at a later stage in future teachers
won’t just be educators but they will
also be facilitators of effective
learning students can now experience
something that when they were not able
to experience before and be better
prepared for when a similar situation
occurs in the real world
indeed when implementing technologies
like these is concerned they will always
be challenges
but the days not far when AI VR and AR
tools will be as accessible as
smartphones and desktop computers
however we cannot ignore the inherent
benefits that these technologies can
bring to address the gaps in our
learning and teaching that we’ve been
struggling to fill for decades I
strongly believe that by utilizing these
technologies we can really help shape
the future of learning thank you very
much [Applause]
