I was in a van it was small and felt
familiar I was taking up a mountain one
so steep that I thought if we stopped we
might start rolling backward it came to
a halt and I was told to walk to the top
and not stop unsure and out of breath I
continued eventually I found myself 300
feet above the trees and when I looked
behind me the path I took up seemed to
have disappeared I looked down and all I
can see was death by a thousand jagged
rocks I felt hopeless when I realized
that there was no turning back
my palms began to sweat my knees lock my
muscles seized in my heart was racing I
felt paralyzed though this was my first
time about to bungee jump off a canyon
in the Swiss Alps that feeling was
terrifyingly familiar for me this is
what the fear of failure felt like this
paralyzing fear kept me in my own way
for many years as a child I dropped out
of every extracurricular activity that I
ever signed up for and avoided sports
altogether at the risk of not being good
enough and as a young adults I followed
the path of my peers too afraid of what
a path of my own could feel like I
literally jumped off a cliff to silence
the voice in my head telling me that I
can’t to prove to myself that I can this
was a pivotal moment
and it was also the catalyst for
developing my proprietary way of goal
setting which is called the real goal
methodology using this way of goal
setting I earned myself five promotions
in five years I doubled my salary in
that time I started a successful
business of my own and I wrote and self
published my first book in under a year
real talk
see what I did there seriously though
this thing works whether your goal is
personal or professional this way of
goal setting has the ability to rid your
life of the fear of failure and open the
door to an abundance of success and
that’s what I’d like to share with you
today most goal-setting methodologies
don’t account for why you want to
achieve a certain goal they serve as a
comprehensive checklist allowing you to
measure progress with ease but they are
missing the innate emotional connection
to your innermost desires leaving you
poorly equipped to readjust when things
don’t go according to plan and so you’re
left there chasing your tail not making
progress lacking motivation and
eventually giving up but real goals are
different real goals are built on the
foundation of emotionally stimulating
criteria that help you to set and
achieve objectives that matter the first
pillar of a real goal is resonant goals
that resonate have a direct connection
to your why I’ll ask you if you don’t
know how your goals are why your goals
resonant goals are really tied to your
core values I’ll give you an example a
friend of mine hates public speaking
hates it doesn’t like crowds doesn’t
like the attention it’s truly just not
for him so when I discovered that he had
registered for Toastmasters
I was shocked why would you do that I
asked him as it turns out he was asked
to deliver a eulogy for someone very
dear to him and he wanted to give the
best talk of his life his what was
improving his public speaking skills but
his why Randeep when your goals resonate
you may stumble you may even fall but
you will not you cannot fail but even
with the most compelling deep-rooted
connection to your goal you can lack the
motivation to change and if you’re going
to achieve anything especially something
that requires a conscious change in
thought and behavior it needs to empower
you which is why it is the second pillar
of this model empowering personal
empowerment is about two things
believing in yourself and following
through I can assure you that I would
not be here on this stage before you
today if I did not believe in myself and
real goals force you to face the
thoughts that make you feel unworthy and
kick them to the curb that’s like I’m
too old or I don’t have what it takes or
I’m not good enough those thoughts keep
you small and allow me to remind you
that self sabotaging thoughts do not
breed success but self empowering ones
do with a real goal those thoughts are
replaced with ones like I am experienced
and I will learn and I am enough you
need to understand how you want your
goal to make you feel if you’re going to
properly evaluate what you need to do
to make it happen which brings us to the
follow-through and the next pillar in
this model actionable who here is quick
to give up on their goals before they
begin to see progress it’s difficult to
stay motivated isn’t it you want to see
immediate results and instead you see
this long road ahead and a mountain of a
task that is downright intimidating with
your blinders on you don’t see what’s
waiting for you just around the corner
and you forget that every step no matter
how big or small but every step forward
counts I work with entrepreneurs and
companies who are looking to make that
step forward they’re here they want to
get there but they don’t know how to do
it breaking your goal into actionable
chunks takes the guesswork out of what
to do next which ultimately minimizes
risks and reduces fear but it’s normal
that on your climb you may get tired and
this is when having identified the
lucrative nough sub your goal comes in
handy which is also why it’s the fourth
before beginning your pursuit of success
you must identify what’s in it for you
not your partner not your children not
your colleagues you if you’re ever going
to feel truly successful you have to
anchor what you’re doing to the direct
impact it has on your life and the
lucrative nosov your goal doesn’t
necessarily have to be monetary it could
mean letting go of past mistakes
it could mean putting an idea into
action or it could be learning the new
skill that will
you the promotion but identifying
everything you stand to gain and
anchoring that to how you want it to
make you feel you can see everything you
stand to lose if you decide to stop
climbing real goals soft wire your
brains to align your thoughts emotions
and actions to achieve success
transforming a simple checklist to a way
of life
imagine what real goals could mean for
our education system if our students
were rewarded equally for focusing on
their passions as they were passing or
for our economy if every employer got
100 percent from every employee by
helping them connect what they’re doing
to why it matters or for society if
together we helped each other believe
that yes we may experience difficulty
imagine what this could mean for you is
there a project you’ve been wanting to
start a few pounds you’ve been trying to
lose a move that you’ve been too afraid
to make think about why it matters how
you want it to make you feel what you
need to do to make it happen and what’s
waiting at the peak of your mountain use
that to take the leave it Nietzsche said
he who has the why to live can bear
almost any how you have your way within
you I’ve given you tools how what will
you do with a life fear free you
